  • Hawaiian activist and educator Haunani-Kay Trask has died. Known for her passionate speeches, Trask led and inspired many in the Hawaiian community to seek self-determination.

      I played her speech from the 90s at my job so everyone can hear especially after these fires. Her speech still resonates now.

    She was amongst the first to bring out the Sovereignty issues around the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, that there is no "treaty of Annexation" and that Hawaiians are not Americans. There were in 1893 Hawaiian citizens who were naturalized from many other nations and their rights were also taken away. Haunani presented the case so very well.

    One of our peoples powerful voices. She fought for us to her death. I will always be grateful for her and to the day, I am still watching and learning from Haunani until my death

    I had only discovered her work in 2022 and was disturbed and shocked to hear she had passed away in 2021. I need to find some more of her writings and speeches.
