Today's lesson is a special one because I am going to show you how to play ALL of the riffs and solo in "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath. :)
And what is also really cool about this Paranoid guitar lesson is that it is one of the easier Black Sabbath songs you will run across.
In the first video lesson I will break down each guitar riff note-for-note and demonstrate any specific techniques required to play them.
As I said before, I think this song can be played by beginner guitar players if they want to give it a try. Of course if you are a total beginner, everything will be challenging to a point. But, if you have any guitar experience at all you will probably find that learning how to play "Paranoid" will be a piece of cake.
That isn't to say that Tony Iommi's riffs aren't great, in fact some of the riffs found in "Paranoid" are considered to be some the greatest hard rock riffs ever written. It just goes to show you that simplicity can be extremely effective if used correctly.
Having said that, the solo for "Paranoid" is anything but easy. You will have to be at least an intermediate level player before attempting it. The solo contains a lot of fast blues licks that move across the fretboard quite rapidly.
The most difficult task will probably be getting all of those fast bends together. As always, learning the solo phrase by phrase like I teach it in the lesson is the way to go. That will let you focus on the individual difficulties that each part has before combining them all into one large piece of music.
In the solo to "Paranoid", Tony Iommi is using an octave pedal plus a couple other effects to get his tone. It sounds like two guitarists but it isn't, he is just playing the same thing I teach in the solo video lesson and the octave pedal is creating that additional solo line with him.
The first video covers all the classic riffs and the second video will teach you how to play the solo.
So I hope you guys enjoy learning some of the most classic guitar riffs ever written by Tony Iommi and the great Black Sabbath. :)

"This next phase is a little more active" famous last words
😂 true especially for me
Damnit I know. Why can I never play fast? Lol
@@dryanbuchanan ive been stuck on this solo for one and a half years, closing in on 2. i can literally only play up to 6:46 at song speed. hopeless
@@critiqueofthegothgfno. It’s not hopeless. You can do it come on
@@critiqueofthegothgf If it was easy, everyone would do it. Keep at it!
Finally!!
After a year and a half, I finally completed a ten minutes video
that's dedication there
I am a classical guitarist but my schoolmates in our class were like "can you learn this so we can play it together" and I started 2 days ago, I have only a week in total lol and I think I'm fucked up.

same im a beginner i shouldnt even be here
@@khoroshoorange you were me a couple months ago. "Oh yeah, the song's just a bunch of down strokes how hard could it be?"
I've been a beginner for way too long, but you are helping me change that. Thanks Carl.
Just when you thought the song was easy......
chrous, verse, etc: takes 5 min to master
solo: takes 2 years to master
The whole song is easy. There is just a good bit of practice involved with the solo compared to the rest. Tedious repetition, but its not difficult, just requires patience and motivation.
@@mikekatz7980 couldn’t have said this better I repeated the solo in parts over and over until I could play it without even looking then would move onto another chunk of the solo. All together took me a month and a half.

Learnt this as a nice begginer solo
awesome lesson! i tried to learn this solo myself from tabs and by ear and i couldn’t do it but now having you break it down note for note i’m catching on to it quickly!! just got yourself a subscriber to both of your channels👍🏻
It took me a month and a half but I finally got this down thank u!
Thank you so much. My first guitar solo and I'm in my 50's. I'm decent at 75% speed. 100% soon. So fun even though it's taking me over a month.
So nice to see older people play guitar. I’m 20 and i feel like i have wasted a lot of time not learning haha
I think I"ve replayed this video more than 100 times, but a finally got it!
ive been on learning this solo for 5 hours, without this video i wouldnt of done it thank you
Great lesson but I can never go fast enough to learn the solo without pausing and going back at least 82.357 times per phrase
+EragonSuperM try memorising it first and listen to the youtube video slowed down then try to play along frase by frase. It's a relatively easy solo it shouldn't take to much practise :)

dont give up my bro!! I almost got it down its nailing each small lick at a time! we all be great guitar players love you all :D
This is the secret to unlimited watch time on YT, teach as solo that’s crazy in a song which beginners can play most of. Now you have all the beginners replaying this video millions of times trying to figure out, “next phrase, little bit more active.”
Beautiful pentatonic solo from the past.
This is the best paranoid solo on the tube..Carl in my humble opinion has the most accurate lessons...thank you...rock on

Tbh, i just saw Tony iommi play this in a interview, and i like this one better. Has a cleaner tone which i specifically like for this solo.
Just discovered your stuff a couple weeks ago. Thanks for all the work, very well done.

Superb bro...your way of teaching is too good, thanks a lot...God Bless U...:-)
Your one of my favourite RUclips lesson makers but you went way to fast through that difficult section lol your killing me man
Thanks Carl, your explications are always very good and it is the really good sound like original!
Love your videos man! You helped me learn this solo so that I can practice each lick and learn inside and out of them. Especially the bends and pre-bends stuff. Keep up the good work!
Cheers. Straight to it. I appreciate your instruction.
Thanks, Carl for sharing these guitar solos on your channel.
I've learned lots of riffs because of your youtube!
I hope you can show us the Blue Monday of White Lion.
A lots of cover out there but your approach of sharing/ teaching is different from others!
Everything’s easy until that blues lick kicks in
What’s a good Black sabbath solo to learn that’s not extremely difficult?
Thanks man had fun with this one🤘🤘
I have been stuck on this solo for quite some time already.. since there is no work this morning I’m dedicating my morning to learning this solo haha time to get her done, son
I underestimated this guitar solo but I will get it done lol
How you doing?
I finished and got it memorized about a month ago… I still have trouble with the fast parts but all in all.. I got it done lol
“Easiest solo I’ve ever heard”...said NO ONE!!! I need an entire semester for this.
i learn a lot with your lessons... awesome lessons
Would it be sacrilege to start it on the B string, bend the F# up to G, down to F# and then hit the D and E? Why does sound it more like the original recording to me? Does Iommi really bend all the way to an E and then play D and E? It sounds more like a G to F# bend, or maybe down towards the E until it's time to play the D.
I’d rather tear my eyes out than learn those blues licks
Holy crap 15 minutes later I just learned my first solo! Thanks for the awesome lessons!🤘
you rock! thank you!
Great lesson! Thank you!
When it was over I was like shit it’s a 9 minute video! Dudes a legend! Thank you!

So many phrases...how do you remember them?
I can't beleive im playing this solo and its thanks to you Carl.
Hey Carl,
Which strings do you use on this video ? All the best JP
awesome, very cool tutorial as always
Hey Carl, just wondered how you go about learning a song? Like where do you get your tabs from. I have the tabs of this song and it's ever so slightly different around the part where there is 3 bends on the 15th fret high e string. Not sure which to go with. Superb lesson by the way, I've tried a few others and just end up coming back to you. Thanks
Thanks man for lesson. Great playing, great teaching. Thanks to you I can master this solo !!! keep it up. Good work. If possible. Can u show some riffs for saxon forever free. Will be greatfull. Peace.
I can sort of play this slowly. Any tips on speeding up?
EragonSuperM hate to tell you, but the only thing that works is constant practice. Get the solo down in phrases, eventually piecing them together. Keep at it, and you'll get it down, and one day wonder why it was so difficult.
+EragonSuperM Practice each little phrase over and over until you can do it no problem then put it together and you could do it, but it takes lots of practice
Practice with a metronome
Funny comments section:
"How do I play this better?"
"Practice it."

I can play this solo pretty good so far even in 100% speed but those bendings on fifteenth freet on b and e string sounds horrible. Am I the only one having this problem?
Bro same I can’t get it to sound right did you ever figure out a trick to get it right?
Not sure what you mean by the "bends sound horrible" ? I've actually found that the bends on the high e are the hardest part of this solo. I've actually looked at this vid to see how far he bends the e string to get that full step. Notice how he pushes the high e right up to the fret marker, I.e. the middle of the fretboard. On my guitar it feels like the string is going to break but if you do push it that far, you will get the correct note. Hope this helps

Hi Carl.
He's not gonna respond bro. Stop trying
lol it's been 2 years.

Hi
Good job !!!!!!!!
Carl i've noticed that when you tab your index finger and then your 3rd, the second finger taps a fret as well. So by pressing your 3rd finger the second one taps as well.
Is this right????In terms of acquiring finger independency. I mean, if i do that will it be considered that i have achieved (for some part) finger independency????
Paschalis Antoniou
He normally taps it, it's just on how we see it
*FOR EXAMPLE*
He does a hammer-on from 7 to 9 he sees it as that, but from a front facing perspective, it looks like he is hammer-inch on 7,8 and 9
great, thank you

Think there's something wrong with my guitars intonation, mine just sounds flat compared to the notes you're making past the twelfth fret, oh well, anyway, I learn how to play it that way.
Thanks for the tutorial, such a fun song. Wish I'd started learning earlier.

The first half was easy. The second half is kicking my butt.
it is hard because tony solos with his bluesy instincts and doesnt pay much attention and does pentatonic stuff with feelings

anyone know whats on the bridge of his strat
+Mike Merifield Are you looking at the whammy bar? The long shiny metal rod.
No it looks like a little black pad
+Mike Merifield I think its one of those bridges that hold the six strings separately so that each string can be adjusted without effecting the others. The operative word being "think".
your guess is as good as mine. But it
still was helpful

The awesome part of this lesson is the fact I have the black sabbath book from 1989
Can I play Black Sabbath songs with single coil sound? Anybody answers?
***** Sure, that's what Carl is using in the vid. You maybe need to apply more distortion though, comparing to humbuckers. But getting more distortion shouldn't be a problem because the technology we have now in most amps.
