Yes, showing mercy can get you into trouble and may even cost you your life. Still, it's better than the alternative.
It's ironic since Kimblee stated that Ed's mercy was going to get him in a lot of trouble (which brought him in such a bad situation), but his mercy to the two villains is what got him out of the trouble after his fight with Kimblee.
It's also why Kimblee respects Edward's convictions. When Pride cries: "He'll kill me!" at the end, Kimblee responds "If you think that, then you still do not understand Edward Elric".

I love the fact that it's Edward's mercy that gets him into this precarious situation, refusing to kill Kimblee - but it's the very same mercy that allowed both the Chimera to live, and save him. Not to mention, all the good they end up doing down the line too.

I love how this show forgets pretty muc *No One* neena had such a meaningful death. Even though she was there for one episode, the mention her a lot and show flashbacks and everything.
It's really amazing how after this scene Ed suddenly grown a lot and seemed much more mature. I was always wondering why did he suddenly changed so much within a year but rewatching it I realized that this scene is the reason. The years that he sacrificed basically caught up to him. It's fucking amazing how much detail did the manga's author put into this work.
I dont think that is the reason, i presume if you lose Llifetime your healthy ages will be shorter and then you die a couple of years sooner but it doesnt modifies your growing up process. Puberty just hitted Ed like a truck in a good moment xD

Anyone who is medically trained knows being impaled with any object (arrow, sharp poles, etc.) you need to carefully trim down the object first and then be ready to stop the bleeding immediately. Lol also he would have to transmute it into something else, it wouldn't just disappear.

I remember seeing this in the manga and my eyes started throwing up tears... my poor baby Ed D': Vic Mignogna did great in this scene. But Edward >< wahhhhhh
The funny thing is, even though Edward payed the price of being impaled due to his mercy, he gained two allies in Heinkel and Darius who were both allies on The Promised Day. Arguably, Al wouldn't have survived the fight with Kimblee and Pride if it weren't for Heinkel, so this one act of Mercy could've saved the world.
Who had chills down their spine after watching this? Vic Micnonga put a lot of character to even SCREAM in pain as if he was in pain. Making this by far the best I've seen in the franchise.
This is honestly one of the best dubs of all anime. I usually watch sub, but fma has really put in the work and effort into making this an amazing and truly talented dub.

You can almost feel the Metal being ripped out of YOUR OWN BODY when watching this. Also, that ending where it fades into the ending song is so smooth! Song's awesome too, and the song while Ed transmuted his wound was cool too. Brotherhood had a killer anime soundtrack!

The freaking screams in this scene were too good for something fictional. It genuinely hurt my heart, his voice sounded like he was in actual pain, yet it's a voice actor in a recording booth doing the scene. Freaking good acting.

Fun fact, Edwards life span was already longer than usual as he shares hohenheim's DNA , and since he lived up to 100 in the 03 version (the 2005 ova) we can also assume he wouldve lived that long in amestris, so his life span was cut short but probably not noticeably short, probably the regular life span 45-60 instead of 70-100, we can assume maybe Alphonse lived that long,

When Hughes died, he wasn't trembling with grief at the funeral. He was trembling with rage cause Hughes daughter was crying, and it annoyed the piss out of him. He staged the war with Ishval, and then armed his men with fake philosopher stones to make sure their slaughter was as great as possible. He was TRAINED to be this way, as we see with the failed "King Bradley's" near the end of the show. The men is PURE EVIL, and Bradley was the best of the worst.

People, please. Edward would never have used the Stone for his own benefit so it didn't matter if the two Chimera men found it earlier. The brothers have only used the Stone once and it was for the benefit for others.
Ed is told he needs a stone to heal himself so he instead sacrifices his own lifespan to heal. They find a stone 2 minutes later after Ed shortened his life.
I love how after he performs the transmutation the camera pans out and the characters appear to be in the middle of an eye like when the door is opened.
I saw the sub version of this and it's honestly not the same. With the dub you can hear how much in pain Edward is suffering from the pole being pulled out. Dub wins this for me.
That’s just crushing to watch. The determination, the sacrifice, and then the utter pointlessness of it . You can’t help what you don’t know, but having a stone that close and not knowing about it almost seems like a cosmic insult
Absolutly one of my favorite scenes. It really showcases Ed's fortitude and perseverance to remain a good person no matter what he suffered. Its just amazing. I love this beautiful show and its amazing quality
I see what you mean, but I think this scene(even the whole anime) takes a lot from Christianity. You could say a philosopher stone is a pseudo example of God. Edward is one suffering soul and refuses to use the suffering of other souls to achieve his goals. Those who create philosopher stones use the suffering of others to achieve their goals. So I think it makes sense that the sparks are lighter.

Ah... This scene brings back a fondness that I have for FMAB especially when I watched it the first time the person who wrote FMA is a genius.

Fun fact, Edwards life span was already longer than usual as he shares hohenheim's DNA , and since he lived up to 100 in the 03 version (the 2005 ova) we can also assume he wouldve lived that long in amestris, so his life span was cut short but probably not noticeably short, probably the regular life span 45-60 instead of 70-100, we can assume maybe Alphonse lived that long,
The pole being slowly pulled out of his stomach is the most visceral and disturbing scene in the entire show.
It's so sad that even after all that, when he finally got his and Al's body back Ed will have such a short life ;-; ....he deserves to life longer!

If you were referring to Bradly cause he SEEMED okay.....remember, he was the most evil of the bunch. When Hughes died, he wasn't trembling with grief at the funeral. He was trembling with rage cause Hughes daughter was crying, and it annoyed the piss out of him. He staged the war with Ishval, and then armed his men with fake philosopher stones to make sure their slaughter was as great as possible. He was TRAINED to be this way, as we see with the failed "King Bradley's" near the end of the show. The men is PURE EVIL, and Bradley was the best of the worst.

@@rikiishitoru8885 I'm pretty sure childbirth can be pretty painful, though I'm not a female, I would imagine having constant contractions for hours on end pushing the baby out I think can be really painful.
I'm not saying it isn't painful, I just don't think it's comparable to being impaled through the gut by a giant metal rod

Risked his own life and probably took years off it to heal himself bc he didn't have a philosopher stone. Passes out right after the transmutation and finds a Philosopher stone, the ironic irony.
I just remember finding this to be such an intense episode, especially because of this scene. I felt so bad for Edward here, but he's such a trooper.

I love how after he performs the transmutation the camera pans out and the characters appear to be in the middle of an eye like when the door is opened.
I saw the sub version of this and it's honestly not the same. With the dub you can hear how much in pain Edward is suffering from the pole being pulled out. Dub wins this for me.
That’s just crushing to watch. The determination, the sacrifice, and then the utter pointlessness of it . You can’t help what you don’t know, but having a stone that close and not knowing about it almost seems like a cosmic insult

I see what you mean, but I think this scene(even the whole anime) takes a lot from Christianity. You could say a philosopher stone is a pseudo example of God. Edward is one suffering soul and refuses to use the suffering of other souls to achieve his goals. Those who create philosopher stones use the suffering of others to achieve their goals. So I think it makes sense that the sparks are lighter.
