If the wife works, she's a bad wife. If she doesn't work, she's a leach. And older women abusing younger women is disgusting. The whole "i was treated like a servant, so now i get to treat you like one ", needs to stop.
If that was me I wouldn't be happy in this marriage, having to deal with a meddling mother-in-law who causes no end of trouble .
The real problem is not the mother in law. The problem is the husband. Even without his mother he's a lazy stupid weak little flower . In fact I think MIL did OP a solid by getting them divorced.

"The first baby can come anytime, the rest take nine months." My Mother told me that adage was ancient history before her time. She encouraged us to remain celibate until marriage, but also said pregnancy was not a reason(excuse) to marry a bad husband.

This is a channel from Japan and the Japanese don't think of marraige as " forsaking all others". Here in the West a man and woman leave their families to make their own family; in Asia a woman leaves her family to marry into her husband's family. This is why, throughout Asia and to this day a mother in law has so much power: she becomes the wife's new mother and her job is to train the daughter in law to become a perfect wife and a perfect homemaker for her son. That's where the abuse comes in, because the mother in law has total power over the wife. If her husband is the eldest or only son his wife will most likely at some point have to live with and care for the mother in law, especially if she's widowed, especially as she grows old and frail. This is why Japanese mothers will tell their daughters not to marry the oldest or only sons, even though that son usually inherits the family home and most of the assets. This is also why so many women in Japan, Korea and China aren't getting married, because they have jobs and dont want to give them up to devote the rest of their lives to "serving" their husbands and families. To this day most Japanese women stop working when they get married and become homemakers. In Asia a woman who gets married is expected to give up her own life and hopes and dreams to care for the family. Asian governments in the three countries I mentioned are seriously worried because the birthrate in all three countries is falling fast, because Asian women almost never have children outside of marraige. The illegitimacy rate in Japan is 2%, even lower in Korea. Look at street pictures from Japan and count the number of children in them. Used to be pictures from Japan had children all over the place, many held on their father's shoulders. Now you'll see young couples without children, older people , so few children.

@@ire1398 I get it. Just pointing out that "Forsaking all others" is a Western Christian concept that does not exist in the culture this story comes from. Most Asians, billions of people, are not Christians or come from countries with Christian histories.

I don't like the attitude that having kids out of wedlock is ok. It is not. Glad they got married, but it is still the wrong order. This slip in morality is not good for families or society. Just because it is becoming common doesn't mean it is right or acceptable. Lying is more common, stealing is more common. Even murder is more common. It doesn't make it right. Can we not strive to do better?
Why don't you just mind your own business? What people do in their personal lives is no one's business but their own.

I got married after having my children. My daughter was a bridesmaid, my son was still a baby, we have been together 29 years and married 20. What does it matter the order as long as everyone is happy and healthy what's the problem. A lot of families don't even get married they just stay common law. It doesn't make any difference to their upbringing
