  • I got my first job in Data Science without a Computer Science degree. In this video I am sharing my SEVEN best tips that helped me break into this field.
    Getting an internship in data science without a degree is definitely possible with the right preparation and the right mindset.
    Checkout these useful resources I mention in the video:
    1. Article on data pre-processing/data exploration:
    www.analyticsvidhya.com/blog/...
    and another article explaining why it is so important to know for data scientists and machine learning engineers:
    www.infoworld.com/article/322...
    2. Best SQL tutorial:
    www.w3schools.com/sql/default...
    3 .Some of the Machine Learning experts I follow on LinkedIn:
    Kate Strachnyi, Cassie Kozyrkov, Andrew Ng, Jason Brownlee, Elena Tej Grewal, Vin Vashishta, Kevin Gray
    I used icons made by Freepik, itim2101 & Good Ware from www.flaticon.com
    And if you want to make my day with a cup of coffee... :)

    I think the first step, that is more like a leap, is believing you can. Colleges are great, degrees are valued, but there's nothing about the curriculum you can't learn with enough passion and hard work. Not relying on the structure of college is even a more accurate training to what you'll do when you need to solve problems that have never been solved, you have to deal with ambiguity, and there's no one to give you an assignment. Steeper learning curves force you to learn faster - and what's better than that?

    I love this video! Thank you so much! I got my Bachelor's in philosophy from a small university where I was in an AI lab studying logic-based AI. I left my master's in philosophy before I finished -- ehh, it wasn't for me. With the area of philosophy I was interested in, I found that most of the texts were untranslated and even Google translate can't completely get some of Husserl's (a philosopher) material just right. So my passion project -- a long-term goal -- is to analyze these untranslated texts with existing NLP tools (rather than building my own algorithms). Anyway keep making these videos... I subscribed!

    • @karolinasowinska
      @karolinasowinska  4 года назад +2

      Your interests sound awesome, and translation is a perfect use case for NLP! For translating philosophy works, it's very important to get the context of the words right. Have a look at Google's BERT - it's one of the newest and most accurate NLP algorithms that is great at represnting words' context. Here's the offical repository: github.com/google-research/bert. If that looks too hard for now - start off with the simpler NLP tutorials and algorithms, but keep BERT in mind! ;). I'm glad this video was useful and thank you for your kind words! :) Good luck!

    been really finding great information from your videos. Would you have one example of a first/novice ML project for GitHub? I’m working on one right now involving scanning through lists of product/manufacturer names and finding typos (Jaro-Winkler)/duplicates to then narrow the list and begin setting criteria for what JW score is the cutoff. I’m unsure if this project is novice/moderate/etc and could use some feedback. Thanks!

    • @karolinasowinska
      @karolinasowinska  3 года назад

      Your project sounds good! In my mind it lies somewhere between novice/intermediate depending on how you approach the problem. Are you going to use some existing libraries to detect typos? And when it comes to a list of projects, I think it's a great idea! I'll try to make a video about it ;)
