I know it's a matter of personal taste and your opinion isn't necessarily wrong. I'm just saying that when comparing Gerard Butler and Michael Crawford, I prefer Crawford because he has a melodic voice, compared to Butler's gruff, off-key, "monstrous" voice that, for me, doesn't really work when you consider that the Phantom was always meant to have a deceptively sweet voice. It was what attracted Christine to him in the first place; he sounded to her like he really could be an angel of music.

    • @karenpinson759
      @karenpinson759 5 лет назад +31

The Phantom had been teaching Christine to sing. He was her teacher. Michael's voice sounds like he could teach her, but Butler's voice sounds way too gruff and rough to have been a singing teacher, much less an operatic singing teacher.

One of my favorite things about Erik ks that, to me, it seems like Christine kissing him made something click. It didn't redeem him, but maybe it made him understand why Christine and Raoul were so devoted to each other. I think it made him understand what he had been missing- that love is selfless, and that one should always put their loved one's safety over one's own comfort or joy. I think that's why he told them to leave in the end- he understood that he needed to *let go*.

    • @ammonjudson4006
      @ammonjudson4006 5 лет назад +12

I think we can't blame Erik because he had no experience with love, childhood, or kindness 'till now

    • @tearoses9940
      @tearoses9940 4 года назад +27

Robert 0077 ......Raoul is literally ready to die for Christine’s freedom. He apologizes for being there and for her having to make the decision. Erik is the one who feels entitled to Christine (“Your *chains* are still *mine,* you will sing for ME”) and is manipulating her for a good chunk of the show (to the point where in Act II she’s so terrified of him she almost refuses to do the play). Forcing marriage onto someone and threatening murder isn’t okay. Yes, he lived a tragic life, never knew love beforehand, and was desperate to cling to the one person who ever showed him kindness, but the reason for his toxic behavior doesn’t exactly excuse it.

    • @tearoses9940
      @tearoses9940 4 года назад +14

Robert 0077 And he assumed that meant he was entitled to marrying her. If I ever ended up on Broadway or something, I would certainly be grateful to my acting coaches for getting me there, but I wouldn’t be marrying any of them over it.

    • @wandererwerewolf477
      @wandererwerewolf477 4 года назад +17

It is both simpler and more complex than that.
In essence, Erik is looking for that love which should have come from his mother -- and so, as each woman in turns from him, they become the mother that cast him aside, in his eyes. In the end, he came to believe that love was an illusion, and that Christine would cast Raoul aside for her own convenience.
And then she didn't. She was willing to return to him for another's sake. And he had to accept that love was real... but not for him. And so he lets them go.

Well, i think he is the most "operatic" one, his voice suits the sad and melodramatic tone with also a bit of the spooky voice, i do think the mexican cast phantom has the deep voice i myself always heard when reasing both the book and script. Butler would be a good phantom, not a musical one, but his acting would fit amazingly on a horror non musical phantom, when i see him, i picture him emulating Lon Chaney, from the poses, faces and specially reactions, just make a better deformity and make him play with his biggest attribute, his phisical capacity and his strangely emotional face

I came here looking to see if anyone else had found wonder in this exact spot of this song. I'm gratified to learn that's the case for so many, though it's nothing short of amazing to learn that these 3 or 4 seconds out of the entire soundtrack also seem so remarkable to so many others. It's inexplicable. For me, it's the crescendo at "choose" for Crawford and Barton. Even though they're both singing very similar lines, it's the way that Barton clearly enunciates the first part of the sentence up to "choose", then fades as Crawford comes on strong from "choose" and then on through the end of the sentence. Listening to this in my car for the first time after the show, I thought it was one of the two's voice, it switched so seamlessly. Listening to it without the background noise of a vehicle I still get blown away at how well this came off. It's just magical.

Michael is the only one whose voice, in my opinion, is how the Phantom was supposed to sound (almost ghostly). Gerard did good considering he had no formal training and he acted the role well, but his voice did get in the way some of the time. His redeeming factor for me is how well his acting was during the All I Ask of You Reprise and the finale. Emmy Rossum may not have been that operatic of a singer, but she certainly acted the role well and was good as an ingenue (plus, she's actually Christine's age in the movie). Sarah's only redeeming factor in my book is that she's a very good operatic singer, but I don't care for her when she's not singing in one of the operas (Think of Me and Point of No Return).

Michael definitely owns the roll, and I appreciate (most) everyone who's followed. The problem I have is how the Phantom has been changed from cunning ghost to overbearing hyper-masculinity in the singing style. It robs the finesse of what makes the character so appealing.

When they make him too much of a romantic leading man, it takes away the authenticity of the character. He needs to be the phantom.

The part that gets me is during the end, before the Phantom's last part. The moment he realizes Christine actually would sacrifice the rest of her life for Raoul. You can hear it in his voice once he really figures it out, the moment he realizes "God, what have I done?"I feel like a lot of people want the Phantom to win here, but his whole character arc relies on the fact that at the last moment he realizes he has made a mistake. He truly loves Christine but he does not know how to love in a healthy way. I dunno, The Phantom realizing he messed up and letting the two go is a really impactful moment for me.

Having seen the movie with gerard butler and now the actually Broadway recording this is next level. Part of me does like Gerards gruff voice seem more fitting as he is a monster. But I think given the story is he is a mysterious singer teaching Christine, this version makes a lot more sense. I love the trio portion!

    Most favorite Phantom: Michael Crawford
    Least favorite Christine: Sarah Brightman
Crawford's voice is beautiful, melancholy, sinister, and full of emotion. Sarah, gotta love her, but her voice lacks emotion, just a single consistent sound.

It's probably youth and naivity that's behind this opinion, but I think Sarah Brightman has too old of a sounding voice to play Christine. She's supposed to be young and innocent but she sounds about 35. Amazing voice though, and Michael Crawford... wow.

I love that musical!! I am absolutely in love with it, that is what I'm sure everyone wants is the Phantom and Christine ( I know I do) it only bothers me that the musical almost glamorizes the Phantom a bit. A man living in the catacombs of an Opera house surely can't be tan or as clean or even muscular (I may be wrong though, I guess it also depends which version one watches, the 2004 definitely portrays that) But I still enjoy it all, music, novel and theatre. Cheers!!!

I can't use reply because I'm on my iPod, but the reason he says 'or' instead of 'and' in "Do you end your days with me, or do you send him to his grave" is because, he is asking if she would stay with him for the rest of her life or if she should leave, resulting in Raoul being killed.

    PHANTOM:
Say you'll share with me, one love, one lifetime...
Lead me, save me, from my solitude...
Say you want me here beside you...
Anywhere you go let me come too...
Christine, that's all i ask of...
RAOUL: Oh my god, Oh my god
    MADAME GIRY:
Monsieur Le Vicomte, come with me
Monsieur Le Vicomte I know where they are.
    RAOUL:
    But can I trust you?
    MADAME GIRY:
You must, but remember your hand atthe level of your eyes...
    RAOUL:
    Why?
    MEG:
    I'll come with you
    MADAME GIRY:
No Meg you must stay here. Come with me Monsieur, hurry or we shall be too late.
    PHANTOM:
Down once more to the dungeon of my black despair!
Down we plunge to the prison of my mind!
Down that path into darkness deep as hell!
Why, you ask, was I bound and chained in this cold and dismal place?
Not for any mortal sin, but the wickedness of my abhorrent face!
    CHORUS:
    Track down this murderer!
    He must be found!
    PHANTOM:
    Hounded out by everyone!
    Met with hatred everywhere!
    No kind word from anyone!
    No compassion anywhere!
    Christine, Christine ...
    Why, why ...?
    MADAME GIRY:
Your hand at the level of your eyes!
... at the level of your eyes ...
    CHORUS:
Track down this murderer he must be found!
Track down this murderer he must be found!
Hunt out this animal, who runs to ground! Too long he's preyed on us, but now we know, the phantom of the opera is here deep
    down inside!
He's here the Phantom of the Opera...
He's here the Phantom of the Opera...
    CHRISTINE:
Have you gorged yourself at last in your lust for blood?
Am I now to be prey to your lust for flesh?
    PHANTOM:
That fate which condemns me to wallow in blood, has also denied me the joys of the flesh ...
This face - the infection which poisons our love ...
This face, which earned a mother's fear and loathing ...
A mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing ...
Pity comes too late - turn around
and face your fate: an eternity of this before your eyes!
    CHRISTINE:
This haunted face holds no horror for me now ...
It's in your soul that the true distortion lies ...
    PHANTOM:
Wait! I think, my dear, we have a guest!
Sir, this is indeed an unparalleled delight!
I had rather hoped that you would come.
And now my wish comes true - you have truly made my night!
    RAOUL:
    Free her!
Do what you like only free her!
    Have you no pity?
    PHANTOM:
Your lover makes a passionate plea!
    CHRISTINE:
    Please Raoul, it's useless!
    RAOUL:
    I love her!
    Does that mean nothing?
    I love her!
    Show some compassion ...
    PHANTOM:
The world showed no compassion to me!
    RAOUL:
    Christine, Christine...
    Let me see her...
    PHANTOM:
    Be my guest, sir ...
    Monsieur, I bid you welcome!
Did you think that I would harm her?
Why should I make her pay for the sins which are yours?
    Order your fine horses now!
Raise up your hand to the level of your eyes!
Nothing can save you now - except perhaps Christine...
Start a new life with me -
Buy his freedom with your love!
Refuse me, and you send your lover to his death!
    This is the choice -
This is the point of no return!
    CHRISTINE:
The tears I might have shed for your dark fate grow cold, and turn to tears of hate!
    RAOUL:
Christine, forgive me please forgive me ...
I did it all for you, and all for nothing ...
    CHRISTINE:
Farewell my fallen idol and false friend ...
We had such hopes, and now those hopes are shattered!
    PHANTOM:
Too late for turning back, too late for prayers and useless pity!
    RAOUL:
Say you love him and my life is over
    PHANTOM:
All hope of cries for help; no point in fighting!
    RAOUL/PHANTOM:
For either way you choose, he has to win/you cannot win!
    PHANTOM:
So, do you end your days with me,
or do you send him to his grave?
    RAOUL:
Why make her lie to you, to save me?
    CHRISTINE:
    Angel of Music...
    PHANTOM:
Past the point of no return -
    RAOUL:
    For pity's sake,
    Christine, say no!
    CHRISTINE:
    ...who deserves this?
    PHANTOM:
    ... the final threshold...
    RAOUL:
Don't throw your life away for my sake!
    CHRISTINE:
When will you see reason ...?
    PHANTOM:
His life is now the prize which you must earn!
    RAOUL:
I fought so hard to free you ...
    CHRISTINE:
    Angel of Music ...
    PHANTOM:
You've passed the point of no return ...
    CHRISTINE:
    ... you deceived me.
    I gave my mind blindly.
    PHANTOM:
You try my patience - make your choice!
    CHRISTINE:
    Pitiful creature of darkness...
What kind of life have you known?
God give me courage to show you you are not alone...
    CHORUS:
Track down this murderer he must be found!
Hunt out this animal, who runs to ground! Too long he's preyed on us, but now we know, the phantom of the opera is there
    deep down inside!
    PHANTOM:
Take her - forget me - forget all of this...
Leave me alone - forget all you've seen...
Go now - don't let them find you!
Take the boat - leave me know, swear never to tell, the secrets you know, of the angel in hell
    GO NOW!
    GO NOW AND LEAVE ME!
    Masquerade...
    Paper faces on parade...
    Masquerade...
Hide your face so the world will never find you...
    Christine, I love you...
    CHRISTINE:
Say you'll share with me, one love, one lifetime...
Say the word and I will follow you...
    RAOUL:
    Share each day with me
    CHRISTINE:
    each night,
    RAOUL/CHRISTINE:
    each morning...
    PHANTOM:
You alone can make my song take flight -
it's over now, the music of the night!
