These days I use a Synergy rack setup that's smaller than most heads and is 4 channel + 100 watt full tube. With a Torpedo Live for direct. It's a rabbit hole for sure but you can get some very cool setups going.
glad I'm not the only one that struggled with that setup. I wish I could give you some tips as a previous owner, but it left the stable pretty quick. Thanks for the vid!
Great video. That tone is massive! The presence on the 2:100 is disabled when connected to the recto preamp, so any changes made to the presence on the 2:100 would have no effect to the tone…same with the 2:100 volume. All controls are on the preamp when connected to the 2:100.
Rack gear is so impractical, yet so cool! 🤣 I used to rock an ADA preamp with a carvin power amp. I dreamed about rocking a triaxis with a 90/90 poweramp
I used to have one of these preamps years ago. It was really nice but it took a lot of dialing it in to get good tones recorded with my limited skill set at the time. I never bought the power amp companion. Overall, it was a good idea at the time for direct recording.
I honestly wish there were more standalone preamps. Also, you could get like 5 very different preamps and 5 very different power amps and have 36 distinct sounds. More practically, you get a preamp (like this one) that basically IS your sound, then have a little solid state pedal power amp for home, a 20 watt studio power amp and a 200 watt monster for the stage. The format just gives you nearly infinite options. You do pay for that versatility though.
I never owned this set up but the reasons I thought it would be great mostly involved being able to do stereo effects without trying to use two separate heads in conjunction, to run through just one side of the power amp and always have the other as a back-up in case one side blew up, or to push two full stacks and just get belligerently loud. In retrospect the last one is the most logical way to go. But I did a few shows where I pushed 4 Orange cabinets with my Triple Rec so I figure I got pretty close to that goal anyway.
Cool and interesting video on an amp that's not very often seen nowadays. Not my kind of sound tough, I've never been a big Mesa Boogie fan, I always feel they have a kind of "too much" in their sound, too scooped, too gainy, lacking of real meat. But the video is cool and does justice to the amp ! Good job !
Kyle, if there was ever a Fractal Rectal to be played, I probably did that back in the early 90's. It's all a blur. Anyways, love what you do and the community on YT you've created is badass! How bout a X-mas sale on some gear? Doesn't hurt to ask.
Dayum! I have a fryette 2/90/2 that needs this preamp. Haha. I thought this sounded pretty dope, and ive heard nothing but negative stuff about this preamp.
That racktifier sounds waaaay better than the recto heads, the split pre/power amps combo let's you fine tune the sound in ways you just can't with the head!!
I have a question for you. My current bass setup is pretty ad hoc, a guitar preamp into a solid state guitar power amp to a Peavey cabinet with a single 15 inch Black Widow. I make it work, but it does take some tweaking. I'd rather have a bass amp. I'll never be the bassist in a gigging band, it doesn't have to be the 500 watt SVT model with a cabinet taller than me. I could get away with a 20 watt combo if it records well. Affordability is key. I write and record punk songs. This will never be lucrative. What should I be looking at?
Rack gear is something I never got into. But seeing Kyle stumble over the names of the equipment is pretty damn funny. I feel your pain bro. I have to do so many takes on my videos, it's actually f'n sad.
Sounds crazy but try a Boss Metalzone (distortion at zero/level cranked) in front of a recto to add more mids and mid control. Just don't make any extreme moves on the MZ EQ and it works great. The Maxon ST9 Pro+ also works great in front of a recto and adds a lot of presence along with a mid-enhance/control knob.
Are you running the power amp bridged? From the video it appears both switches are on so I would assume so. For me the magic of rack gear is running in stereo with two completely independent channels and layering that with some nice wet reverbs and ping pong delays. Once you get used to that humongous sound, it's hard to go back to mono.
Back in the mid 90s I rolled into VFW hall hardcore fest with an ADA MP2 w/ Marshall 9200 tube power amp. Ran 4 1960A cabs. It sounded like you tied Chokehold to a Space X rocket and recorded the take off. Kyle look into the ADA MP2. :)
The only rack gear I still use is a Furman power conditioner. (One switch to turn everything on) Korg rack tuner (mute button!)and a BBE sonic maximizer. Even run it into a Spark 😂
@Kyle, have you ever tried the BluGuitar Amp1 Iridium? You have so much experience with amps and I would be curious what's your opinion about this little evil guy.
Stereo is cool. As much as I love tube amps, nothing sounds better than stereo reverb and FX. So yeah give me tubes and then a stereo solid state FX output stage.
I have the recto preamp paired with the mesa 2:90 and can get sounding almost exact as any of my other rectos I own like the Rev F and RoadKing for example. I just don't like that the power amp is so heavy!!! What I did to set the amp up is basically set the preamp on how I set my normal rectos and on the power amp I engage the modern mode and deep mode and set the presences to max and I am sure my tone is too bass heavy for some, but that's how I like it. Kyle you got some great tones out of that set up! \m/
For a moment there I though it was the Mesa 50/50. Which existed at the same time Peavey 5050 power amp. The only reason I know about those power amps was because I was looking for one for my Peavey Tube Fex.
Hahahah this was awesome and hilarious. This thing sounds pretty gnarly. On the whole touring thing, it’s almost like no one is using real amps onstage. Unless I’m wrong here
It's just too much work and too many points of failure anymore. Modelers just don't complain about touring like amps tend to. It's also super convenient to have your tone and all your effects in a single rack unit. It's kind of a no-brainer unless you really want to do extra work to have analog gear on stage every night.
I had this setup for a while, I always struggled to get it to sound like a real recto strangely, my roadster seemed much better next to it, plus the clean channel on this preamp is garbage
I'm not a fan of the million amp models in one unit and miss the one clean sound and one super flexible distortion sound, each with super super flexible eq that you can dial in, hit save, and recall on the fly... y'know... the ADA MP-1
"No, it's not guitar lessons!" Lolol
Those 7 string riffs at the end with that sound dialled in was massive sounding.
Rack gear was hard to justify for gigging smaller venues. Always looked cool when someone rolled in with it loaded up with a fancy tuner lighting up.

Maybe the tone in the room wasn't to your liking, but that was honestly some of the better Dual Rec recorded tones I've heard. Very aggressive.
The rectal fractal ... Now thats an amp I can do without. 😂

Dudeeee love your videos!!!! Been a big fan for awhile now and I’ve been taking some inspiration for my band !!!!’
Doing a great job mate! Always enjoy your videos and keep up the belligerence! 💯👍🏻

I HAD AN ADA AS WELL...IECE 0F JUNK...S0LD IT AND B0UGHT A R0CKTR0N MAXE PREAMP, MUCH BETTER F0R HEAVY STYLES! STILL HAVE IT!
Ada rules n DigiTech twin tube tube fx blows most even the new on the cheap.small rack top .

The recorded tones here sound badass
That is "And Justice For All" tone All Day.
Best preamp ever!

Owned this same setup back in 2004. I miss it so much.

7string sounds great pv plus n 5150 my stereo rig blows walls down supertones real amazing 5150 overdrive and mxr eq 10 bands in fx loops wow 😮❤

I bought this when it first came out. Still have it. I never liked it for guitar but oh my goodness it is awesome for bass.

I first thought it was a Rev F Rectifier 😁
Hope you’ll get that one soon !
I like racked gear for my small studio where I am required to take advantage of vertical space.
That racktifier sounds waaaay better than the recto heads, the split pre/power amps combo let's you fine tune the sound in ways you just can't with the head!!
Holy crap that thing is brutal

EMG 57 sounds amazing with that set up !!

I want some Ractal Fractals for sure. That sounds metal af.

I use a peavey rockmaster preamp with a peavey clsssic .50/50 , also a lexicon mpx1 and a boss gx700 ,, love the set up.
They were commonly called the Racktifier, which is easier to say.
The only rack gear I still use is a Furman power conditioner. (One switch to turn everything on) Korg rack tuner (mute button!)and a BBE sonic maximizer. Even run it into a Spark 😂
I have never seen one of these before. didn’t know this was a thing
Funny video! Rack is back, bring on the 80's
100W per side...Jesus, who at Mesa decided the Triple Rec wasn't enough XD
IMAGINE RUNNING STERE0 WITH 2 4X12'S!!
I love that Les Paul Studio.

I still have my TriAxis, someday I may get a Mesa power amp, but I have Engl rack gear, and a Mesa JP-2C rack amp.
that rack crap sounds killer!
