Don't forget to make a video on the REPORTED SPEECH, especially when we don't change the tense. He said he would go to the cinema tonight OR He said he will go to the cinema tonight
This is an excellent question, and I will address this in more detail in one of my next videos in this series. Luis is correct in that "bread" and "butter" are two singular subjects joined by "and." However, in this example, the correct choice is "is" because "bread and butter" is considered a singular noun phrase. Even though it consists of two items (bread and butter), it is treated as a single entity in this context. Therefore, the singular verb "is" should be used to match the subject "bread and butter." Compare that sentence with this one: "Bread and butter are two items on my shopping list." In this case, we use "are" because we are not talking about "bread and butter" as one single entity. Does that make sense? I will address this with more examples in a future video. :)
Namaste! 1. Your videos on this topic are good but your often complaining and/or subconsciously belittling English isn't mature/wise. A dedicated mother smiles and wipes/cleans her baby - never does she make the baby feel 'bad' about her/his excretions. 2. When a teacher speaks about English's incoherence - many (thousands here) of her students imbibe the same negative thoughts about it; which in the long run nip the bud of 'shraddha=श्रद्धा' in their minds. Such seeds will never allow a learner to 'love' the subject, instead they will make 'fear' the root-emotion. 3. Nevertheless, your teaching is good and videos are intelligently designed wrt presentation, segmentation of timeline, delivery of one simple topic at a time amongst other laurels. 4. Your chart at12:20s is valuable. I'll appreciate and be grateful to you if could make a detailed video on this topic. Best regards

Bread and butter - - - - - - his daily diet. (was /were) which one is correct? I am confused about this one.
Were because there are two singulars joined by and ;)
This is an excellent question, and I will address this in more detail in one of my next videos in this series. Luis is correct in that "bread" and "butter" are two singular subjects joined by "and."
However, in this example, the correct choice is "is" because "bread and butter" is considered a singular noun phrase. Compare that sentence with this one:
"Bread and butter are two items on my shopping list."
In this case, we use "are" because we are not talking about "bread and butter" as one single entity. Does that make sense? I will address this with more examples in a future video. :)
Thanks a lot for clearing my confusion ☺️

Thank you SO much for your kindness and generosity!! It means so much! ☺☺
What gets me confused about subject verb agreement is when a plural word like everybody has to go with 'is' and not 'are'..
I will address that in my series! There will be several videos because this is a BIG topic!
