This year is my 50th anniversary as a working photographer. I just added a new Dell computer as an additional editing platform in addition to my two Macs. I find Adobe's subscription model abhorrent and went looking for a substitute. After testing a couple of options I decided to take a chance with Luminar as I got it about two hours ago for a sale price of $89.00 so I figured for that price the gamble was worth a try. I have now completed uploading 4393 images. The interface is nothing short of brilliant. The speed of adding the images was incredibly fast and the visual representation of the images is beyond outstanding. I'm looking forward to the editing capabilities and I suspect I will be very pleased.

"Abhorrent." Absolutely. Adobe also has the worst support and each time I kill a Mac (which happens with monotonous regularity) getting adobe acrobat back (lifetime download) is as big a headache as reinstalling everything else combined. They used to have lifetime downloads for sale but hidden, but this time, for LR, I am just saying WHY. Why would I invest again in this kind of predatory product, even if I could find the lifetime download product. Thanks for your feedback on this substitute.

This is just my 2 cents worth, but here is no such thing as lifetime with any of these companies, because usually annually they bring out a brand new version say v2 which you'll have to pay an upgrade fee for. You also stated Neo is a little cheaper than LR yes, but for the extra couple of $ you get Photoshop, Camera Raw plus a free Portfolio web site I actually use saving me paying for web space.
My biggest gripe is speed, Iv'e just upgraded to a M1 Macbook pro 16gb, and Neo still takes forever to process my finished edits, whereas LR flies through them.
A very professional video David well done, which has helped many out there I'm sure to decide what's best for there needs.

Brilliant software. I've just left Adobe for Luminar. Mostly happy with it but I'd like to see Layer naming brought in. It also accesses the image folder directly, so if you're doing any more than standard Post Processing, I'd make a copy of your image and edit that,

Besides the monthly fee (which was annoying), Lightroom kept telling me it couldn't find my images. I was spending more time searching for lost images and folders. In short, I was having a DAM problem-digital asset management. I wanted something simple-- I wanted to control where and how my images were stored. When Luminar came a long it solved the issues. When Luminar Neo arrived I found my decision was a correct one. Easy workflow. Thanks for the video !!

  • @DaveBerthiaume

Luminar has a lot going for it, but they're moving to a model where new features are being released as paid "extensions". That's a big "no thanks" from me. I own AI and Neo, but have decided not to further buy into their ecosystem and just stick with Adobe. Once in a while after I've made an edit with Adobe, I'll pop over to Luminar just to see if one of the templates can add that finishing touch to an image, but that's as much as I use it now.

Earlier versions of Luminar could be pretty slow and a bit buggy, but Neo is quick and smooth. They added a lot of features in weird spots in their interface recently and I found it to be a huge resource hog on my Mac. I did some comparisons and generally found the results I was getting in Luminar to be better, especially on portraits. I trialed Lightroom but didn’t like that I had to switch back and forth between Lightroom and Photoshop. Also, it’s weird that there is Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic with different experiences. My advice to Adobe would be to simplify their portfolio of apps.

    Appreciated the video, David.
    Here's my issue with Luminar:
Skylum has a habit of ignoring major software issues while at the same time coding in useless features. I used to use Luminar exclusively, but the bugs were so bad that I had to give it up and I went to Lightroom. It frustrated me (and a ton of other users based on their Facebook group) to no end that it would take five minutes to process a simple healing brush edit (making it utterly useless), but by golly, if I wanted to add a Space Shuttle or fake birds to my landscape scene, I could do that no problem.
And that's what I mean: Version after version came out, but the slowness of the app and the bugs in it were never fully (or at all) addressed. At the same time, they would just keep adding in ridiculous "features" that no serious professional or semi-pro photographer would ever use; hence why they don't exist in Lightroom or Photoshop.
I'd like to give Neo a try, just because it is certainly faster and easier to edit photos than it is in Lightroom, but I struggle with the notion of continuing to pay them for nonsense.

@@DavidJohnstonPhoto Sorry hit send earlier before I was finished. Yes I haven’t looked back in my editing journey, dropped Lightroom and use on1 raw and Luminar neo. Although, Luminar is the fastest to get a great results, but sometimes in need some of the tools in on1. Your video was a perfect hitting all the high points of Luminar, and I did get some good nuggets of information. Keep up the great work!

Love Luminar, AI and Neo. Only use LR for B&W in Silver Efex. This suits my photography.
