- Hey y'all! In today's video, I'm talking about something a little different, and that is, why I deleted Instagram off my phone, and why I'll never re-download it again. I talk about why I felt Instagram became a negative force in my life and my relationship with social media in general.

What have been your experiences with Instagram or other social media apps? Which ones do you have the most difficult time separating from?
IG is definitely the most toxic and addictive platform. Which is why I quit 😊
Actor Brad Pitt was asked by a journalist. He said to him: Why don't you have a social media account like other actors do? Brad Pitt replied to him, because I feel better with myself now without using that.
I deleted mine too for the past 8 or so months and I felt so free. I couldn’t see what other people were doing so I was completely focused on myself and never subconsciously compared myself to anyone else’s fake life that they don’t really live on Instagram. It also makes you live in the moment so much more in real life not thinking “Oo this would look good on insta” then getting your phone out. You don’t judge people on their looks/life and they don’t do the same to you and as I said you begin to focus on yourself and own life so much more
That’s incredible!! I leave my phone in my bag most of the day now, which is amazing! There’s so much freedom in not being attached to your phone 24/7. I agree, it allows for more self-development and focus.

Surprising to see people are still quitting social media. I’m 18 and I deleted Instagram in 2020 forever. Instagram was affecting my mental health i got affected with anxiety, stress. My life is now normal. Congrats for what you did. Good to see you back in person.
I deleted my Instagram account on June 17th, 2020. Mid pandemic. And I had 8,000 real followers! I deleted because I realized it was making me more sick than COVID ever could. I did have withdrawals, and leaned on youtube a little too much maybe...but I have no regrets. And I'll never go back.
Instagram and Twitter are toxic asf. Hell social media itself is toxic, even RUclips at times.
Exactly
@@ibstayfly Thank you 🦋
I agree although RUclips is not that problematic it’s very much time consuming.
@@oliviateller9087 True dat, true dat.
Yessss omg but RUclips is the only exception tho I search what I want and I see it
I take breaks from Instagram a LOT. I post photography photos and then after I post it I immediately log off. I don’t stick around and watch anyone’s stories or posts. No scrolling.
My biggest issue with that app is experiencing FOMO. I feel like social media alters your mood and takes control of your feelings when you see people doing fun stuff or people hanging out without you and then you start to create a narrative in your mind that’s negative. So, I just stay off as long as possible to not experience that. It doesn’t really serve me in any beneficial way.
I feel the same way! Having a break right now and I already feel a difference and more at peace.. I mean, I can have good day, going to the gym, just doing my own thing all day but when I log in I always feel down and restless and feeling this pressure.. 😒 so many people who are doing so much 'better' things with their life! And what did I do..? At home painting, where I( before I logged in) felt happy about. Exactly like you say, it doesn't serve me at all and it only distracts me from my own life. So taking a huge step back to reconnect and focus more on myself and what I want to do.
I disabled my intagram 2 days ago and I have had a bit of anxiety. But watching videos of people who did it makes me stay strong. Thanks for this video!
Instagram definitely is a pit of wasted time, or can be. And the constant like competition can’t be healthy. I don’t use social media much, pretty much only to keep connected with friends, and share my hobby with others. I rarely post personal stuff, or care much about strangers personal stuff. But with social media in general can be a safety blanket for me at times.
There’s definitely a use for SM, especially regarding fandoms and hobbies!! I truly love it for those reasons
Deactivated mine multiple times. After 10 years being on Instagram, I just realized it's not adding value to my life anymore. Felt like I wasn't myself anymore, this constant urge to check then suddenly having mood swings. I'm so over it 😂 Life is so much more peaceful without it and my mind is free of clutter. No one really cares about what you post. This year I'm moving in silence.
Yesss Elona that’s extremely relatable!!!
So relatable! I wasn’t old enough for smartphones to be around until late high school and I bought one at 19/20, but didn’t have IG etc until 21. since having worked in social media marketing, being obsessed with IG and then deleting it completely, I now have a rather inactive writer account and a private FB for managing pages for work.
I now only use my poetry blog to share my art and RUclips as a source of information and sometimes entertainment. I am glad not to have had this around in middle and high school, I can totally relate to getting sucked into this even if you know the „behind the scenes“ of the industry. It’s bad for our relationships and our individual mental, sometimes physical, health. Once you figure out that nothing is „real“ if you switch your phone off, it’s shocking at first, but then you can heal and change your behaviour.
Good for you! I've done the same! I don't consider Pinterest as social media. It's more like Google. I don't see RUclips as social media either. It's where professionals help people
I deactivated my account and created a new one in which I'm not following nor followed by anyone. I don't scan anything either. I just use it as an online album for my pictures. It was never toxic to me to begin with since I'm only followed by people I know. But it made me very lazy on so many things. Not cooking my own food, dishes are piling up and so many others. I've been very productive since I deactivated my old account to the point that I have so much time and not sure where to use it 🤣🤣
Same for me, I mainly followed people I know & food pages. But it wasn't the competition or the beauty standards, or FOMO that got me. It was going on the Discover page & seeing how many rude & arrogant people exist. I had a problem staying out the comment section & a problem doom scrolling wasting my life away. I logged out & deleted the app 2 days ago & I feel free already. I have a blank business account & I only follow 1 page for informational purposes.
Hi, Claire! My only social media is RUclips. I had a MySpace page when it first came out and realized then how these things become addictive, corrupted, and commercialized. I still enjoy RUclips, although less so with all the ads.
deleted my facebook, twitter, tiktok, and instagram this past friday. i feel great!
That's whats up. Good job dude 👍🏼
Omg! i agree with everything you said! I love your way of thinking.Social media is toxic, i understand that it can benefit people to some extent but it also drains you and makes you feel so useless. I haven't been big with social media tbh not until I became a highschool student in 2015 and I've always been on and off with social media (deleting my acc remaking one) I never liked it yet I always went back to it after months being off. Around 2018 went I went to college and I really started hating the app even more. I was jealous of my friends who'd go parties, clubbing, have so many friends but I knew this wasn't my thing. I didn't like partying, clubbing, being around large group of friends (not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just not for me) yet I felt like I needed to be this way? Not to mention self image!! I struggle with self-image and social media really affected me a lot in terms of comparison, all these challenges on getting nose jobs, it makes you feel so self-conscious of the way you look and it normalizes plastic surgery to the extent where people (including me) feel the need to get surgery not because they want to, but because they've been influenced into getting it and in order to fit in you had to look a certain way so that you grow as a business. The longest I've been away from social media was about a 1 year but now I'm committed to never go back, ever again. I hate it so much especially instagram. Thank you for sharing your experience though, i wish you all the best
I’m sooo happy you made a video on this. I’ve been wanting you to.
Though I absolutely miss you on Instagram I am happy for you 💓 I really am picky on instagram about who I follow & what I share. Most people I don’t know & they inspire me or are aesthetically pleasing. But OFCOURSE I wish I spent less time on it and hate how addictive it is.
Dawwwwwwwwww you rule. I envy those who can find a healthy balance with it, truly! And I miss seeing you and my daughter so much 😩😭😢
Recently I’ve been wanting to quit social media too. I’ve already deleted Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram is going to be deleted in a few weeks. Same with me, I’ve been looking for validation, comparing myself and my life to others, getting frustrated/sad when someone unfollows me, etc. I also want to live a more private life. I think it’s alittle weird to be looking at what other people are doing.
first lockdown i got rid for 7 months felt weird the first few days then i was like i'm fine .We all lived and survived well before all socials lol i think its ok to have just don't let it consume you. live in the real not socials :D good content Claire :D
I absolutely agree with this. I just deleted and uninstalled my Instagram today gor good. I kept deleting and reinstalling but I definitely agree with everything you said.
@@j.banger3600 Yes. Thank you. Same to you🙏🏾
I don’t totally understand the whole keeping up with family around the world reason. Can’t people message, phone call and video call? Like wouldn’t that be a more genuine connection? And if you want to see updates from them, couldn’t everyone just post updates in a group chat? It just feels like we’re spoiled for choice and it’s a strange reason for me when you could be risking a lot more by staying in the toxic apps
I didn’t delete my accounts, just the apps that had a browser version. I did this to RUclips and Instagram since I was on them the most. So then every time i wanted to get on them I would have to take the time to log in and all that, so if I wasn’t feeling like doing the tedious things like logging in, it wasn’t worth going on and I’d do something else. This is a good way to ween yourself off of SM if you find yourself on it too much rather than delete them right away if you know you’ll “relapse”.
I immediately noticed a big change. Especially with the screen time amount which is half what it was before. Now I check both about once a day rather than 10+ times within a few hours with the app versions.
The apps on your phone staring back at you basically beg you to press them to see if there’s notifications even though you know there aren’t any.
You guys should watch the documentary “The Social Dilemma” which interviews people who worked for big corporations and how they purposely make the apps addictive like the notifications and likes and algorithms
Thank you for posting this. I deactivated Instagram because it felt so toxic. I don’t want to go back either
I resonate with this so much, I couldn’t have said it better! Thank you!
I deleted Facebook years ago for the same reasons. Can't say I miss it. good luck on your journey.
Yes I feel the same way omg
I didn't like them anymore. I wasn't getting what I was following on my feeds. I am an artist. I only followed the art world, but wasn't getting any of it. I only got feeds of celebrities, and not people creating art. So I deleted every social media except youtube.
wow its so interesting how so many of us feel the same way. i realized this was super negative and detrimental for me and im deleting my insta
🙏🏾👏🏿👏🏿🙏🏾 yes to every word! Especially about the ads on Instagram!
Hi Claire! I enjoyed watching your video on deleting Instagram and your reasons why. I definitely can relate! Something I did notice was that you still have your Instagram profile up even though you haven’t been posting for months. Just curious if you’re still planning on keeping it but just not checking it ever again? I know you mentioned you deleted it off your phone. Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for sharing!
Hey there!! I’m sorry I missed this comment, I answered it in my head, lol? BUT I’m leaning towards deleting the account all together, but I can’t even get myself to go to Instagram at all to even do so lol 😆 it just drains me like crazy. B/c I would want to go through and save some of the photos on my phone, ya know? Plus there are some of the ‘saved memories’ stuff from your story that I don’t necessarily want to lose either. It just feels like a whole project that I keep procrastinating on, ha!
@@clairehollidayauthor haha I totally get that!! But that’s super impressive that you haven’t even checked it this whole time! Have you seen “The Social Dilemma” yet? It’s on Netflix now and that’s what led me to find your video! You might find it super interesting and validating... thanks for your reply!
You’re authentic, stay real
Love all your streams hope you have a safe week
This is random but you’re so beautiful to me. When I look at you, I feel like I’m back in 1940s. Something timeless and gentle about you
😭😭 you’re so incredibly kind, thank you so much for the random, sweet compliment 💕
I agree!
Thank you!!
I really wanna delete IG and Twitter because they’re both so toxic but I’m really struggling cause I’m so addicted 😔
How are you doing? I deleted the app mid January and I struggle too but I feel less anxious I’ve had no anxiety since
I deleted mine because I've been hacked and scammed. I cannot trust any social media except snapchat and RUclips
I just removed everything from insta
Good for you!! You’ll feel so much better if you don’t already
Yep, a friend of mine disappeared from it. Same reasones
Isnt RUclips similar to insta
IMO, no. Not even a little bit. Part of it is I can be productive (clean, walk my dog, get ready for work) while RUclips is on. I also don’t really compare myself in the same way. Maybe that’s a me thing, but I relate to RUclipsrs rather than feel a sense of FOMO like with Insta.
I love you so much 💗💗💗💗🥰
That's interesting. From a guy's perspective, I can see men being addicted to the infinite number of Instagram models. Especially since one model leads to another model, etc. The fact that so many models are scantily clad...I imagine this would be a hard habit to break for an addicted guy. But other than that, there's not much else on there that seems addictive to me. RUclips is exponentially more addictive to me. There's just so much new stuff you have to keep up with on YT. If you miss one day of news, you are totally out of the loop. I could not live without YT. I would wither and die.
HA!!! I too would implode with RUclips 💞 it’s my life force! And the excess of models is a good point. There’s a great interview between Johnathan Haidt and Joe Rogan, and JH speaks a lot about how damaging social media is on young girls, but I don’t remembering explicitly how it might effect young men, though you would think it would? Might have to relisten to that episode soon!
@@clairehollidayauthor I am beginning to see your point about Instagram. From the content creator's point of view, you can't be a writer and post to Instagram simultaneously. Instagram would take up 95% of your day. And from the content consumer's point of view, you can't work your day job and check Instagram posts. It's too continual and distracting.
Wow, this is very interesting. I’ve always believed social media affects less straight men than other groups. They fall less in the comparison trap than women or gay men. But they still get attached to the addiction though. It’s interesting.
congrats!
Thank god. U gota get off facebook Instagram and twitter. Im telling u its all GARBAGE
Absolute Facts 👏🏻💯💯 👏🏻
