    If you go to bed worrying about your day, your body’s like, “Hey, let me help you out. I’m going to give you a dump truck load of cortisol the minute you wake up, doesn’t that sound great?” Then you may experience anxiety upon waking. This is called the cortisol awakening response. It's connected to your circadian rhythm, and depending on how you look at it, it’s a blessing or a curse.
    If you wake up to anxiety first thing in the morning, you know how uncomfortable it can be. In this video we’re going to talk about how cortisol is different in the morning and what you can do about it to better decrease your morning anxiety.
    Cortisol is a stress hormone that your adrenal glands pump out in response to fear or stress. It helps your body prepare for action and it makes your heart beat faster, and can make you feel jittery and anxious. Even for people without high levels of stress cortisol levels are generally highest within the first hour of waking up.
    Some people wake up with a jolt of anxiety, so powerful that it makes the whole day seem overwhelming. Some people feel frozen in their beds. Some people get activated, irritable, jittery about their day or engage in frenetic activity (this one’s me). Or that jolt of cortisol makes some people wake up to panic attacks or feel like they’re about to have one. Not the way you wanted to wake up.
    Why would your body do that? Cortisol’s function is to help you get alert and perform. If you’re playing soccer, cortisol helps you get pumped up and play hard. Cortisol can help you be motivated to finish a report for work or jump out of the way of a speeding car.
    But if you go to bed worrying about everything you have to do tomorrow, the brain makes a secret plan: “I’m going to help my human get super activated right when he wakes up.” So it plans a little surprise party for you. Alarm goes off, Surprise! Dump-truck load of cortisol.”
    But when we have too much anxiety that we don’t know what to do with, anxiety can trap you in a cycle of worrying about things without taking action, and make it hard to complete tasks.

      The "frozen feel" is real. When I need to get things done I move. Meaning I don't spend too much time in bed thinking about why I'm feeling anxious. Once I get a few things ticked off the "to do" list I start to feel more in control.

    I had unexplainable debilitating anxiety that was worse in the morning, and I was honestly stumped. I wasted time and money thinking there might actually be something wrong with my heart because they said I had a heart murmur. But I went to a retreat center with many other like-minded coworkers. It was so restorative. Since then, I've had minimal to no anxiety. I considered myself an introvert, but I didn't realize how isolated I allowed myself to be. The plant-based food, the people, the sun, the adventure was just what I needed. It's incredible how I am alive today.
    Please remember not to suppress your emotions. Don't isolate yourself. Surround yourself with real support. Hire a coach. Meditate and find ways to cope now before you get anxiety.

    This is the first time I've seen this addressed anywhere! However, there are many times (even during afternoon naps) when I will suddenly wake up in full panic mode--it's physically painful (especially when it runs down the backs of my legs), and yeah--just plain horrible. And yet very often I haven't been thinking about ANYTHING when it happens--I've been fast asleep! It's happened for about 10 years, and I'm pretty sure that at least part of it is the result of some kind of PTSD when I was going through a period when life was very hard for my son, and every day I woke up afraid of what the day would bring. Other times, I'll wake up in the morning and think, "COOL! I don't feel panicked!"--and then a minute later I'll think of the tiniest thing (not even necessarily unpleasant things), and that cortisol feels as if someone mainlined it into my bloodstream with a syringe. I dread it. I've tried everything. I just don't know how to make it stop.

    • @genxx2724
      @genxx2724 2 года назад +4

      Cortisol is the hormone that causes us to wake up. It’s not about making it stop. Just remember it’s the reason you feel dread, there’s nothing abnormal, and it will dissipate.

      @kassidycoburn4514--thank you for responding and letting me know that it's not only me (not that anyone should have to feel that way for no reason that makes sense!). I keep thinking it's a combination of PTSD (as I mentioned) and hormones, but it's so hard to explain to most people. I have a medical marijuana card--cannabis is, so far, the most effective way to make it stop, but I wish it didn't take a drug to fix it temporarily. I'm generally a very happy, optimistic person who's been blessed in more ways than I deserve, but mornings can be hell, as you obviously know! Do you have any thoughts on what causes it for you? I just don't know if it's purely physical, or emotional, or a combination!

    • @kassidycoburn4514
      @kassidycoburn4514 Год назад +2

      Cannabis works for me too, unfortunately it ends up doing the opposite after smoking for months, I get really ill, it's called Cannabis Hypermesis Syndrome. Sucks the only thing that helps me also tries to kill me. I've had anxiety since I was a little girl in kindergarten. For me, I think it's emotional and that then manifests as physical. Getting rid of the energy(exercise), getting fresh air as soon as you wake up and stimulating the vagus nerve(I recommend youtube tutorials) or even just humming stimulates the vagus nerve, helps calm me down some, maybe it will help you too. Sending you love and healing 🥰 may things get better for the both of us

    • @n.ciebevilaqua3603
      @n.ciebevilaqua3603 Год назад +1

      @@kassidycoburn4514 Wow--I've heard of the Hyperemesis syndrome, but have never actually "met" someone who's had it. That must be awful, especially when the cannabis works for you. Fortunately, I'm a lightweight, and it doesn't take much for me (although I must admit that my tolerance has gone up a bit!) to work, and I haven't had any side-effects like that (I usually use a homemade tincture these days--I don't know if that would be any better). I'm sorry you have! But your other recommendations sound great, especially as they're for the morning (if I use weed, I'm no good for anything other than listening to music and going to sleep anyway!). Thank you, and love and healing to you as well!

    I like to take a cup of coffee in the morning (without sugar 😊) and then I sit and drink my coffee at ease… it’s a me time moment, quiet before the morning rush.
    And then I exercise 20 minutes: not too long so you are not stressed out because it can fit into your morning routine. The advantage is that when you are anxious part of you wants to take action and “fight” thus exercising is a kind of fight / action for your body and you feel good afterwards.
    What works is indeed writing what is stressing me. Most of the time it’s my projects at work : for each one I think about the next action I can do (sending a mail or meeting request etc) and I do it. Taking action, even a small one, reduces my anxiety because I do something instead of undergo things.

    I had evening anxiety knowing that I have to get up for work the next day. Somehow being forced to do something creates anxiety for me. I score almost 100 on the openness scale and very low on the conscientious scale. I like to do tasks well but I hate being obligated to do things. I value my freedom to the point that I rather quit my job than being mistreated or having to go there when I don't like it. Being stuck in a routine makes me feel terrible inside, like I am going nuts and exploding after a while. It creates depression and anxiety each time, hence I don't stick with jobs and try to get by with odd jobs or selling my belongings. But the anxiety in the morning was very strong because of this as well. Hearing the alarm is like awakening to a nightmare.

    It could be low B1 also. Low magnesium. And low potassium. B1 counters cortisol. I just learned this. So getting enough B vitamins and minerals from whole plant foods AND doing the stuff she says. Im over 3 years fully caffeine free, including chocolate. I didn't find success until I let it go. Its worth it, but I tell people in my quitting caffeine group nutritional replenishment is key, quitting takes on day. The rest is replenishment. I believe the more nutritionally deficient one is, the worse withdrawal and post acute wothdrawal is. I didn't have much if any withdrawal, but I was taking loads of vitamins, packs 3 times a day. I stopped after about 3 months and thats when the anhedonia set in. That was fun. I recommend weaning off any caffeinated product. Also you want cortisol to be high in the AM, just not exploding your heart, so hit up that B1. B1 deficiency will also cause other sleep issues, and breathing issues in sleep. Such as snoring, and even SIDS. Though I ask what caused a sudden blockage of B1 in the body? It also causes beri beri. B vitamins, its a complex so get them together. And what's in the government/pharma approved bottle is not the entire complex. Whole foods. Now if you're like me with low cortisol in tbe AM and high at night, Ive been working on it gor years, and Id add the below with vit D, whole food form say from lichen, muchrooms, and Im doing red light therapy. Inconsistent. Still glad to be caffeine free, its very worth it though it didnt fix other deficiency issues, but it will make that and other problems worse. Cortisol is made from progesterone, and Im low enough in that without using up all of it via caffeine spiking cortisol. On that note magnesium listed above will get used up by over 300 bodily processes, and by consuming calcium. Magnesium should be higher than calcium in the body, like potassium needs to be higher than sodium to pump your heart properly. So drop high calcium foods, like dairy, if you get lady cramps of any kind. Then start eating magnesium rich plant based foods. Give it 5 or so months and watch things balance back out. Its cool. No one talks about how minerals need to be in a ratio with other minerals, even with heart issues. Potassium needs to be higher than sodium, but we love our French fries. Did you know they coat them in sugar water before they freeze them to ship? Any fast food or convenience food is suspect. I could go on. They engineer food to be addictive. Dairy is naturally an opiate. Watch a video of a calf being weaned, its sad. The mom pushes them away. All dairy literally takes food from babies. And is meant to grow things big. Thisis what I did with caffeine. Its a natural pesticide the plant makes, to explode the nervous systems of bugs, called an excitotoxin. I used to feel like it stayed in my system for longer than the said, about a day and a half. But it takes months for the brain to remove excess adenosine receptors. Anyway, if you read this far, get B1 in you. As whole food form as possible.

Not the past 2 months I find myself struggling to find healthy food meals. But I'm slowly doing better. Anxiety is somewhat under control. The constant panick attacks I was having in Dec/ beginning of Jan is what has made me change my eating. I have not had caffeine since Jan 1st 🙂 I loved my green tea drank it daily now it's just water 🙃

      I am depressed and very much procrastinating all the time when I'm not drinking 1 cup of coffee a day. Do you think it's really that harmful to drink a cup?
      I'm vegan, I eat lots of veggies and greens, maybe I'm compensating for the bad effects it might have?

    Thank you for a very consise and deep, wise pieces of advice. I like listening to them as a speech therapist and specialist in the area of autism, special needs children and also a student in psychology. I like your comments about the importance of spiritual life since a human beeing consists of three dimensions: body, soul and spirit.

    Wow! This is exactly what's been happening to me again. I went through this in my younger years, and then if went away for many years. It's been happening again, and I told my therapist about it in our last session. Thank you so much for this. You're channel is so helpful, and you have an easy way of explaining things. Great channel.

    Emma, thank you for this - really helpful to understand how our brain and cortisol interact. Early last year and the previous one, I kept waking up with a sense of dread (much like after a bereavement) which I think was the effect of having to be "shiny and happy" working in a school during Covid. I eventually mastered the "I can do this" and it subsided. Useful advice and reminders, so thank you.
    PS your little boy is growing up gorgeous!

    Thanks so much for this! I get so anxious the moment I wake up that I can't breathe. My therapist suggested I try to notice 3 things I see, hear, and feel. Hope this also helps others!

    Thank you for doing this video on morning anxiety. I had suggested it about a year ago when you asked us what we wanted to learn more about. I'm glad there are solutions and that I'm not the only sufferer. It was bad for many months especially after trying prozac again after 20 years. It was too stimulating. I had a terrible reaction after 3 days. I woke up a bundle of nerves for weeks after.

    OMG I wish this video had existed four or five years ago! I had no idea why I was experiencing stress as I was waking up and nobody around me understood it either, so it was very isolating, not to mention crippling. The main source of my stress was being in an unhappy relationship and feeling stuck in it. I'm out of there now and though life is not perfect, I have found some peace.
    The morning tips are great, but I think just as important is having a few pre-bedtime wind down activities. I find doing some qi gong stretches or yoga helps the body and mind turn down the stress of the day. Taking a shower in the evening before bed is like washing the day's stress off you! Giving the feet a little massage with oil or moisturiser feels really good. Journaling, meditating, drinking a nice sleepy tea like chamomile, doing some vagus nerve exercises - basically all the good stuff that helps the mind and body to calm down. Being gentle and kind to yourself is so important. Go slow. Speak to yourself with love and kindness and don't be harsh with yourself. I used to think that waking up anxious set the tone for the rest of my day, but with some small simple actions, I'm able to turn it around and have a pretty good day and feel proud that I didn't let my morning stress defeat me!

      I usually feel better as the day goes on and try to tell myself when I am feeling doomed in the morning to just wait it out and I will begin to feel better and almost normal.. And that the day can end up being a good one...
