Americans not being self-reflective enough on our own culture and fashion history and just showing up inappropriately dressed is maybe the most American thing ever.
The funny thing is that, there's a lack of personal culture in the US, most of their culture is base in other countries cultures as basically they decided to kill almost every single native American back in the day so is a country made out of immigrants since it was colonized and also I consider this is why nationalism is so strong because they don't have anything cultural strong enough to hold to. I remember being in a cultural fair in Mexico City, African booths were the biggest ones full of everything from clothes to jewelry and USA's booth was extremely empty with flags and rock and roll music, it was really depressing 😂
the theme wasn’t even “American Independence” it was “America: A Lexicon of Fashion” so it means, american fashion through the years. I feel like Lupita Nyong'o and Quannah Chasinghorse nailed it
Ikr! When he mentioned “American Independence” I was a little confused because I only saw “America: A Lexicon of Fashion” being reported. I just kinda assumed that the former could technically fall under the latter with how broad it was. Nonetheless, good point!
Bad communication it seems. I mean, i don't know much about galas, but as in any meeting, i would make sure my guests know what it is about and what to do... Even if its posted in the website and etc, its the organizers' job to spread the right information. I get not all the designs show the theme, but many of them dont fit at all lo!
@@misskwannie omg it’s just shes so tone deaf about things like to me she just screams pick me girl like I can’t explain it but like you know when you just don’t like someone for no reason that’s how I feel plus her face pisses me off 😭IDK HER & Elon just give me pick me celeb rich people vibes
The sword is made from melted weapons that people turned in I believe.. very subtle but interesting detail I think. Also the mask is from the film Dune
difference is comic con goers create creative super gorgeous outfits using ultra low budgets. meanwhile, these snobs create garbage outfits with designer logos wasting millions of dollars.
I was so confused looking at the outfits I felt like not a lot followed the theme but maybe i'm incredibly ignorant lol so I cant wait to see what you think about it
ALSO (ok i have a bunch of thoughts lmao) personally i think that even though some are wearing a beautiful dress made by American designers, I still feel like it's not enough to be in the theme? I don't know?? Like i don't remember who but someone did a dress made of jeans stuff and that feels inherently american and thus on theme. Am i making any sense, idk. lol
Agreeed - the lack of western wear and Ralph Lauren and old Hollywood over the top glamour but modern made me so bummed. After two years of no fashion, we needed this.
I really think Lupita nailed the theme. Her hair was inspired by artist Lorna Simpson, which is representative of the experiences of black women’s hair in culture. Was excited to hear your point made in the video, just wish more research was done.
her hair is not fashion her outfit is and it did not suit the theme apart from being denim and black hair does not belong to Americans Its just part of it as much as any other races' hair so everyone there could represent the theme with their hair....erm nope..that's not what the met galas about its about fashion not hair
Rihanna said her look was her elevating the black hoodie into couture, something African Americans are discriminated by police for. I still don't like the look but I appreciate it more now that I know what she wanted it to mean.
47:23 I’m sorry but I feel like you did Lupita’s look and the concept of the look a massive disservice. I feel like it definitely hits the “American independence” theme because lets not forget that cotton, the main ingredient of denim, was an industry built off the backs of slavery. Not to mention, you brought up the idea of taking something iconic to American couture and modernising it. I feel that the denim dress is already a reference to the Britney Spears’ all denim look (an iconic American red carpet moment), but with a modern twist that is that purple(?) diamond-speckled breakage in the denim dress. But to each their own I guess :( I was just super bummed that all you had to say was “denim,,, great, thank you.” ;-;
I think he was agreeing that is was an American look because of the denim, he was just unimpressed because it was an ugly dress and not that strong of a connection
@@matthewspinazze4118 It’s the reluctance in his tone when he says “we are hitting the theme…” that didn’t do it for me. He follows it up with “what is it doing, what is it saying, what is its meaning?” which shows that the only connection to the theme he sees is the most obvious being denim. Which to me is such a disappointing take on the look. The connection doesn’t have to be obvious, imo it’s better when the look subtlety tugs at different references of American couture but also culture. I feel like If he looked into the intentions of the designers, he would’ve been able to pick up that subtle connection ;-;
@@Simoneslegs exactly the point. The sword is decorative and not sharp. Grimes talked about how it's a project where people relinquish their guns to make these prop art pieces and it makes the world a little safer. Dune is also strongly anti slavery. Her ensemble was all about "fighting" for peace and the future.
Ok Barbie Ferreira’s dress was one of the first looks I’ve seen on the red carpet that was made for a plus size woman without making her being plus sized like a gimmick or without trying to hide her body. Like it’s a problem that I struggle to think of many others. She looks incredible, the dress is incredible, and I’m really psyched about where fashion can head toward with the normalization of bodies that aren’t like super model, size 00 wearing stunning pieces of couture like this. It gives ya girl hope!
I said she looked like a cupcake in human form with all those wonderful embellishments, and I'm getting shredded on another thread because they think I'm insulting her. I'm 205 lbs myself, she looked incredible. I'm all for big girls getting glamorous. I am one.
idk I wish there was more discussion about Lupita's look besides "it's denim". The cotton and indigo dye used to produce denim is a direct reference to the labor of slaves during the American slave trade. When I learned that detail, it really shook me, so it's one of my favorites for that alone. And while I'm not a Kim K. fan, her look was also one of my faves! I didn't pick up on her "iconic silhouette" reasoning, BUT it did remind me of ppl posting black squares on IG as some sort of "solidarity" for BLM, as if just showing up and having something black really accomplished anything. (And as for the Slenderman reference... you're absolutely right, I love anything spooky👻) I just kinda feel like so many people were disappointed this time, not only because so many guests missed the mark (OOF), but also because when they DID hit the mark, it wasn't obvious enough to be easily spoon-fed to the public without a little extra lateral thought...
same and i agree about Lupita too she was paying O Mage to the black 70s with the denim the 80's black scene with the black sparkles - whatever for the flare out the waste look forever but trending it up to just one side like a split theme - I LOVED IT the hair is so American Black scene for years and years just no one wanted to know about it - but now its all about BLACK - I looked at it for a sec will have to go back and have Lupita moment if I can find her on vogue - it seems everyone else got a video - no one will read this so we love it hehe thats what Im saying anywayz (o;

But swords are still very medieval European, not so much American, because by the time the USA was founded, guns were already invented and used much more widely than swords.
To me, Kim Krdashian is one of the most referential looks to American culture, the fact that her silhouette is so recognizable speaks a lot about celebrity culture which is quintessentially American

It was both yall... lol the Holiday Barbie dress and styling (makeup, hair, accessories) she was referring to was hugely inspired by classic Hollywood. They took from both, all. Most experienced designers can incorporate multiple inspirational sources while still making it their own and they nailed it imho. It also fit the theme. That time was *crucial* for women in claiming their femininity, sexuality, bodies, independence, and success on their own, not because of a man.
I think she looked plain and everything blurred into each other. She looked squished in the top and he hair looked like a stiff cap on her head. Her eye makeup was done too dark for her hair. Although he dress had potential to be something gorgeous, it wasn’t on her body shape.
I think Rihanna said her look was to represent American black/ urban fashion, with the beanie and the hoodie. As a black immigrant she wanted to take something she would be judged for wearing in any other context and make it high fashion. I love that take! I wish there were more critical statements made
Usually design houses pay for tables and invite celebrities to their tables, so basically if you go with a designer you have to wesr them. This usually males extremely hard for the met gala to be a platform for upcoming or small designers, tables are REAL expensive.
I can’t believe you didn’t mention Quannah Chasinghorse. She looked absolutely stunning in her gold winged dress and authentic Navajo turquoise jewelry borrowed from an actual family member while simultaneously honoring her widely misrepresented Native American heritage. She completely slayed the Met both in beauty and following the theme to a T!
While she is Native American, she has a tribe that she represents. I think it's too much pressure for anyone to say she could encapsulate all of Native American culture when she just belongs to one.
Nikki tutorials did so well too repping Marsha P Johnson. I can believe he ain’t talk about both of them. They both matched the theme better than anybody
the fact that kaia gerber and oscar de la renta and FUCKING VOGUE didn't even know the dress was dior and claimed it was halston is so embarrassing. vogue has one job and it's literally fashion.
At this point Anna Wintor needs to approve the outfits before they step onto the red carpet… this was ridiculous. We waited an entire pandemic for this and this is what we get??? Disgraceful.

Billie was giving us old Hollywood glamour and that is a big part of American fashion history. give her and ODLR points for that look. and Ciara! That football clutch! it's adorable!
I'm interested to hear your take on Quanna Chasinghorse. The indigenous model who wore Dundas and turquoise jewelry from the Navajo tribe. I thought that look really turned the "American Independence" theme on its head in a very informative way. She is an indigenous model that is very vocal about wanting to portray Native American culture through fashion. To me that is the winning look hands down.
If you know what capitalism is and if you're a consumer (which you are because you're here on RUclips) you're supporting this. I like how everyone likes to point fingers and don't look where they stand. SMH
Someone made a point that’s actually really interesting (while it is a reach) Kim kardashian wearing black head to toe feels like she is implying how her silhouette and body have influenced American fashion. You might not think it has but the fact that everyone instantly knew who it was just by her body is very interesting. P.S feature lorde in part 2!!
She’s been wearing silhouetted Balenciaga for the past few months. I was hoping she’d go all out for this occasion instead of following Kanye’s new branded style. Like I see her and think of kanye and donda
surprisingly a lot didn’t know it was her (including myself), like take a look at all the comments under posts about this look and it’s filled with “who tf is that” 😂 .
It’s important to note that the woman who has trademarked “Peg the patriarchy” is a woman of color who was not working with Cara Delevingne and her business was not tagged nor mentioned by Cara’s team
Yes like i appreciate Luke making an hour long video and making it fast but also, please, research not just comment what you see, if you are fashion critic
Anna Wintour gotta start putting out detailed theme descriptions with the Met Gala invites at this point bc the misinterpretations (or just complete lack of effort) are out of control 😭 I don’t understand why you would show up if you’re just going to wear a random red carpet look unrelated to the event. I thought the celebs would redeem themselves after the disaster that was Camp but this year was even worse smh
Yeah, most of these celebs look clueless, and us who witnessing it and trying so hard to appreaciating fashion, couldn't even enjoy it much. It's supposed to be the pinnacle of fashion art and work every year.
I think it's vague and wide cuz it allows a lot of creativity from topics to movements but i agree i wonder if it would have been specific maybe they would have followed it better ig
theme was very hard and the exhibit was a fail, and the theme was extremely misunderstood. It's like none of the designers did there research about the exhibit but to be fair they plan these outfits months in advancce and the exhbit didnt even do a good job showing american fashion so it was destined to fail,
Okay but Barbie Ferreiras outfit was so genius, as the outfit is associated with the Great Gatsby which symbolizes the American dream. Soooo I think it’s pretty on theme and so stunning!
I interpreted Kim’s dress as a commentary on how influential she is on making culture today, so iconic that we recognise her instantaneously from only her silhouette.
It also could mean how toxic and aggressive is gossip and paparazzi culture and she's trying to hide from them, or maybe about how celebrities are actually the shadow of their character they represent, it also a lot of meanings, but the only sure thing is that she's iconic
Valentino appears to be referencing Audrey Hepburn's iconic outfit in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in the Dixie D'Amelio outfit. I get the reference to an iconic American movie, but the resulting overall look is a mess.
I am OBSESSED with Zac Posen at the MET Gala. I love all of the looks he creates. When you said he carries the MET Gala on his back I smashed that like so hard! I loved your takes on the looks and each tidbit of fashion knowledge you delivered. A lot of people really had a "prom" or "Oscar" feel that was simply underwhelming. I also liked everytime you gave them credit for looking nice even though they didn't follow the theme. Cause like yes you can still dress nice BUT YOU SHOULD FOLLOW THEME IT'S THE FREAKING MET GALA! Love your stuff, can't wait til MET Gala 2022 to get your "haute" take
As a non-American, I associate so much of American culture with pop culture. Iconic fashion moments from Ms Grace Kelly, Jackie O, Michael Jackson, Cher, Madonna, art references to Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Keith Haring and just so so so much iconic pop culture imagery they could have tapped into and it gave just soooo booooring 🥱🥴
All I want is a drag queen look based around Andy Warhol's artwork like PLEASE, give more attention to how he was very openly gay and did drag himself! Utilize how he depicted the "pop culture" of American foods and stars! God I want more stuff that references him!
Ok but honestly...... how come no one came dressed as madonna? As micheal jackson? Didn't even have to be in a costume way, of course, make it modern, put it in your own spin, just do something!!!!
As a American, I can say we missed so many references and opportunities. Not only for a reference, but to also to have fun, and respect a lot of people that make greater America culture. Literally no one though to invite literally Captain America, or do a more “costume “ look this close to Halloween…and lack of indigenous community involvement really is just sad.
Ooh, I wanted to mention since I did a quick scroll through the comments and didn't see anyone mentioning it: the "peg the patriarchy" slogan was-once again-a prime example of a big, privileged, white-led brand ripping off a small, independent POC designer. The phrase was apparently coined in 2015 by Luna Matatas as a cheeky metaphor for "subverting the system that requires subservience within a gender binary," in Luna's own words. I think it's kind of sad that Cara's Dior corset got all this coverage with people both praising and mocking the catchphrase, while the phrase's origin and intent is so underdiscussed.
Also seeing anal penetration as a synonym for being humiliated, coerced, dominated... it adds up to the stereotype of gay men being less manly because they get penetrated... As "women" do...
I also think Cara was just watching a lot of Drag Race because after Bimini Bon Boulash's similar statements/catchphrase-y takeaways from her time on the show went super viral it's like the whole "___ the patriarchy" is the "it" edgy slang phrase of the season again with no one actually looking into what it means and the origins of it all let alone what the definition of "patriarchy" even is and how it affects fashion in the modern sense, especially in which fashion has been weaponized as a tool of discrimination and oppression throughout time here in America.....it's underwhelming and predictable and basic and boring and I didn't seek out any interviews with Cara but I'll bet you when someone asked her to explain her outfit she probably gave what was from her perspective an empowering iconic feminist statement....and she was probably living in her fantasy blissfully unaware...really thinking that she did something by wearing it......while the rest of us are looking at her like she's one of those people who wear band t-shirts because they think it's cool but can't name a single hit song of said band let alone name one of its members.....it's quite try-hard in my opinion. Pardon my rant..but I seriously doubt she's ever even considered doing a basic Google search on the phrase. It's like when "Keep Calm and Carry On" was so trendy......heh..
Dixie D'Amelio is referencing Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's so it does fit the theme. it's not a great dress and it's not exciting but in terms of the theme, it's there. one more thing, Lil Nas is actually referencing several iconic American staples: the cape is very James Brown, the armor is similar to some of the stuff Michael Jackson wore during the History tour and the bodysuit at the end feels very Prince.
Her look was a direct reference and inspired by Dune. Ya know, one of America's classic sci-fi literature? It can be American without a giant denim american flag sewn on top ffs.
maybe that was the problem, because a lot of them were young - this was their first Met, hence them being inexperienced/amateurs when it came to the event.
Too be fair, sometimes with art you have to hear the story behind it to really understand the meaning, so there could be details of the outfits that are harder to understand at first glance. I think y'all like Maluma's outfit because it's very stereotypical American (the fringe and leather jacket) but there's more to American fashion than just western wear
Caged crinolines are mid nineteenth century. They didnt have them in the 17th century and the girls were not wearing them all through the 1800s. 1800s was after the seventeen hundreds. The cage crinoline is a civil war era clothing not a mayflower era pilgrim clothing or revolutionary war era / colonial Williamsburg clothing item.
Ciara’s dress references her husband’s number and team. The NFL has this concept called the color rush uniform where teams will wear alternate colors and designs other than their standard home or away uniforms for one or two games a season. These uniforms are usually brightly colored and rely less on logos and design lines and more on color. Ciara is doing the Seahawks color rush uniform which is a bright, highlighter green from head to toe and is universally panned by football fans. The fact that she’s taken one of the most hated uniform designs in all of football and made it chic, topped off with her husband’s Super Bowl ring, makes both deep sports and fashion references and I love her for that.
I love this so so so so much. “Oh, your dress is one of a kind? My husband is the only one who can wear this number in this color, and is famous for doing so. Oh, your bling is expensive? Mine had to be EARNED and can’t be bought.” Etc etc, not only high fashion but a serious flex on the other attendees. 😂
As a football fan I was so happy to see Ciara wear this. This was what I wanted to see at the Met. Ciara and Russell Wilson have such a beautiful marriage.
The Met Gala was underwhelming this year because we were missing so many icons. Zendaya, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Harry Styles, Billy Porter...I could go on.
this really should be a drinking game of “listen” and “listen, do i love it?” and “if it were any other red carpet” and “it’s not that hard” and “where’s the americana/american independence”
Lana would've slayed this theme if she only attended. She embodies that americana aesthetic that i'm looking forward to, but anyways we get what we get
AK47s in general arent American anyway though, if it was an African warlord theme, sure... or a Soviet theme...but AK47s and America? Little to no connection.
@@caligulalonghbottom2629 you must not be an American lol anyone from here knows that guns are a HUGE part of American culture, we even have conventions where people go to show off their collections
I'd love to hear what you have to say about Lewis Hamilton's Met Gala outfit. I don't know if you've heard of him but he's the most successful formula 1 racing driver right now and also has a huge interest in fashion. I love motorsports and fashion so I really respect Lewis for using grand prix tracks as his own personal catwalk, even though a lot of F1 fans make fun of him for it relentlessly because the sport is very male-dominated and most people don't care about fashion. I haven't heard a lot of people talking about his outfit at the gala so I'd love to hear your thoughts. He also bought and entire table and invited four lesser-known young black designers as his guests, which I think is pretty amazing since the Met Gala is often so exclusive and smaller designers don't have the ability to get their names out there.
I admire Hamilton greatly for what he’s trying to do for diversity in the racing and fashion industry but his Met Gala outfit was… not American. You can’t just stick a wedding train to a pant leg and call it “American.” (His outfits on track are much more interesting imo)
Hello. I am happy I'm not the only F1 and fashion fan here. Also, I didn't know that Lewis did that for smaller designers. I can commend him for that. I would have loved a tire reference for his outfit. Give us Indianapolis Grand Prix in a fashion x racing crossover! Or maybe like a reference to America's automotive history in general? Would have been really cool.
Timothy is wearing a classical cut in that two part outfit that resembles that era of american independence with something so iconic as white convers. he knows
Grimes' outfit was actually a reference to the American Scifi Dune, the new movie of which one of the co-hosts of the Met Gala is starring in. And her sword was literally made out of melted guns which is American as hell. So yeah she actually was totally in theme, just maybe a little obscure.
Yes! And I also thought Barbie’s dress fit the theme in an obscure way. America is famous for our obsession with overconsumption and excess, and the Art Deco vibe to it fits the theme IMO.
I thought she was doing a take on Lady Justice (with the sword in one hand and scales of justice in the other hand, except instead of the scales she held a book).
I watched a TikTok that interpreted Kim’s outfit to be a statement on herself and her fame. Although faceless and black, the outfit outlines her iconic curves and it’s easy to identify her and she’s a well-known American celebrity
For me I liked some of the outfits like Billie and Lil Nas but I personally think the men could have worn more better outfits rather than just a black suit or a typical suit type outfit.
@Abigail Pierre Hard for the designers because it looks very ethereal, very hard to craft some of those were amazing. But it's easy to follow because it's hard to go wrong or be out of theme
To clear up the history… Flappers were considered unacceptable behavior for women in the 1920s. Barbie definitely nailed the American independence theme.
Honestly I didn’t really think about it like that, but now that you mention that I have an even deeper appreciation for her look. I mean, I’m obsessed with it as it is because it’s a plus sized look that looks incredible on her and doesn’t make her being plus sized either gimmicky or something that needs to be hidden, but with that extra layer of meaning on top, I’m now literally gonna marry that look lol
@Kezia Basaraba I see what you mean but TBH, I think that if the refrences or the massages of the look don't immediately trunslate to the viewers then it's not as good. I mean, most of these looks seemed ordinary to me. Good examples for looks who got it right are Den Levy's and Debbie Harry's, I immediately got the references and I'm not even American. Others didn't get it as right
I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Nikkie’s look - she followed the theme and looked stunning! Amazing rep for RUclipsrs at the met gala, honestly.
@@mallorygamewell7222 It was a tribute to Marsha P Johnson, an important trans activist during the Stonewall riots. I thought it fit her beautifully and was both meaningful to her, personally, and perfectly fitting the theme.
@@mallorygamewell7222 No that was Megan Thee Stallion She literally looked like she went in a time machine back to 2003, ran to her local mall and grabbed the first prom dress she saw on the clearance rack. Tacky and messy, sis.
For Billie, it’s very Old Hollywood which is on point for the American theme, and seeing her done up like that is the insane exciting thing, because she doesn’t dress up like this often.
Omg I know, I thought it was extremely beautiful and demure. Not every outfit needs to be over the top and crazy- it’s already kinda crazy to see Billie in something like this! That beautiful peach color and off the shoulder organza made it my favorite look. And it was on theme!
Grimes dress is titled "Bene Gesserit" and is a reference to an American dystopian novel, Dune by Frank Herbert. Its not obvious, but it is pretty cool when you know some back story.
Dune is known more for being first and foremost a science fiction novel with little regard for America or its history so it literally makes even less sense how Grimes dress is related to the theme
@@victoriarosa1762 dune is like the mother of American sci-fi novels. it came before star trek. before star wars. before most modern forms of science fiction. who is referencing an American designer any different to an American novel? also dune is full of themes of religion, freedom, and violence. (very American if you ask me)
I heard Grimes’s sword was the American reference as commentary, saying that it’s very American that weapons are the main focus, in spaces where they don’t belong…
Devastated that you didn't go over Nikkie's look. So many elements telling a beautiful story! The traditional Dutch elements, the silhouette and color reminiscent of the statue of liberty, The crown of silk flowers referencing Marsha P. Johnson, and them trailing off into the drapery as if swept away in the currents of the Hudson. It's such a complete story starting with early settlers, the country's fight for independence, and this fight continuing even to this day! Very impressed with Nikkie and Edwin.
I wish Quannah Chasinghorse was referenced. She's the only Native American attendee (as far as I know) and acknowledged settler colonialism. She deserves so much more!
I feel like Kim’s look is a commentary on media and society glorifying bodies, no face, no personality, essentially interchangeable flesh that can be copied and pasted ad nauseam. We can also instantly recognize that it’s Kim simply because of her curves that she etched as a beauty standard in 2010s. It’s pretty powerful in my opinion, though I don’t necessarily like her.
Thank you for particularly good commentary on Dan Levy’s outfit and the football uniform dress being a reference to a 70s design. Another video mentioned the Iris Van Harper dress references melting down guns to make the sword and I am not super familiar with the story but it is on theme. My favorites are Lupita Nyongo’s diagonal gather lines at the waist in denim, Iris Van Harper dress with recycled plastic discs which I think is subtly on theme for referencing American research and innovation to solve problems like pollution, classic feminine blush pink for miles on Billie Eilish, green rose on Eliot Page, Dan Levy’s art story outfit, and starry sky transparent material on Amanda Gorman because it is on theme and illustrates her poetry but as a judge she doesn’t take too much attention away from the other outfits.
The Met Gala was so bad this year I thought the theme was something along the lines of 'don't leave your comfort zone' or 'bland is beautiful'. I did like Kim's look though, mainly because it looked like death/covid had rolled up to the party.
Kim K definitely slammed it for me. Her whole body and face are covered head to toe, yet you see the shape of the person and instantly know it’s her. The style of the costume in terms of fabric, the shoes, the monochrome black - also 100% signature Kim K. It’s actually inspiring that she doesn’t have to reference any designer and or any other celebrity. Kim’s body and her whole personality built around it - that’s definitely 100% American
This is a really interesting take. I initially didn't like Kim's look, but reading your interpretation has made me appreciate the look in a different light.
I think to me, obviously literally knowing nothing about American fashion especially luxury fashion, Kim k’s look made a lot of sense to me with its focus on her silhouette and her body shape which has had major influence on American and global fashion and beauty standards
Ahhh Barbie Ferreira’s look is actually one of the most genius, on-theme ones featured in this whole video. It seems like she’s referencing the angelic figure in the portrait that’s become synonymous with Manifest Destiny (just Google that term and the painting comes up first!) which is insanely central to America’s cultural mythos. We stan a political deep cut queen!!
lana del rey wouldv'e ate up the "Americana" theme.. i mean so much of the symbolism and motifs in the beginning of her career she used were "American" or referencing American pop culture (from like the 50's, 60s, old Hollywood as well) not to mention even her more recent releases like Norman Fucking Rockwell have that theme of "American-ness". She rocked it in 2018 and I genuinely think she would've looked amazing this year and definitely SHOWED up (even though she frequently misses on other red carpets) because of how much this theme would resonate and mean to her. Not even much of a Lana fan but I was surprised to see she wasn't there since whenever I think of someone who has utilized American iconography she comes to mind.
As far as I know this year everyone that attended the met gala had to be vaccinated for safety measures and correct me if I’m wrong but I’m assuming since Lana del rey wasn’t even able to wear real masks during this pandemic, she might also not be vaccinated and that, plus her anti mask wearing bullshit, could be the reason she wasn’t there 🤷🏼♀️
@@Marli99716 she's never said she was an anti-masker. The mask you're referencing, she has said numerous times, had an inner lining. After that incident, she's been consistently photographed wearing "real masks". As for her vaccination status, I don't think you can simply assume she's not vaccinated.
@@christianrledesma I only said she might not be, which I think is a fair assessment and could be said about anyone not attending this met gala because you just don’t know, except for if they’ve publicly talked about it, and I also said correct me if I’m wrong 🤷🏼♀️ also how is it supposed to have an inner lining and still be see through? Sorry but it’s just not possible, in order to have a functioning mask you will not be able to see the mouth, plastic shields are also not effective masks. I am glad tho that she has been wearing real masks since that incident.
While I’m not an American, I got a lot of references to American pop-culture from Lil Nas X’s ensembles. First Liberace, then C-3PO in Montero kinda, then a bodycon Elvis Presley reference (notice the patterns of the beading). All three of those characters are notably coded as queer/gay (note I said “characters” and “coded”, I don’t care to speculate on real people’s private identities, nor is it relevant - also C-3PO is a bucket) and the conversation of gaudy extravagance = perversion or deviancy by way of sexuality, and how harmful that stereotype is to the gay community, is one that has come up in queer- and gender studies for decades. The pieces are all golden and embellished and, with the exception of Liberace, almost needlessly sexualized - just like how the US is often seen from our perspectives as outsiders. I get it’s not American fashion- or history references, but Lil Nas X and Versace spoke pretty loudly on American popular culture to me. Am I reaching here?? I definitely could be, but I also made the Liberace and Elvis connections right away as I saw them. Please let me know if I’m completely off-base.
I was super disappointed about how badly the designers shoved their larger chested women into I'll fitting garmets. I have a large chest and most of the women who had over a c cup was either busting out if their dress or the underside was so poorly made that it was misshapen. Im so tired of designers just designing for women with smaller chests. There are women who have medium sized breasts and so on.
They design haute looks for small chested women, but never actually make anything for us in the “real” world 😒 they suck. Gorgeous full chests, and the “perkier” (idk how to say non existent boobs correctly, I just call myself a boy 🤦🏻♀️) women NEVER have real clothes they can buy and wear. I’m over it, to be honest. I literally have tried so many dresses with a 23 waist and a size double D tops, to the point I want to shriek (I’m five foot 90lbs, not a model FYI 😩😂). It makes NO SENSE. I tailor everything, but it’s expensive. I just want one single item where it’s either meant to fit you or me. WHO DO THEY MAKE THESE DAMN CLOTHES FOR 💀
I noticed that too and as someone who also can relate to that, literally that's how it is with formal/event dresses always. It's annoying how we always have to have costume made and can't just wear from the model. But they have the money and I expected the designers to actually do their best, but no. It's even worse if you are small size, but the cup size is on the larger size. You can barely find something fitting, and It's the worst.
I’m so disappointed that no one referenced the “we can do it!”-poster (Rosie the riveter)!!! It’s an iconic and easily recognisable look that could have been done in so many interesting ways!
And why so many Audrey Hepburn references when there are so many American fashion icons? Why no pop star moments or classic 60s Jackie? Why not reference American industry and innovation? (walk in in astronaut suit and I would’ve been happy) Or even referencing contemporary movements beyond slogans splashed on a dress. I would’ve been blown away by a beautiful BLM inspired outfits (when I saw Kim K’s that’s what I thought it was)
I feel like maybe an over the top sort of Statue of Liberty look would've been so great and totally unique and on theme with it too, like idk maybe a super facy dress idk SOMETHING seems like celebs have no creativity and like they didn't even try.
I feel like your video isn’t well researched as usual, the fact you found the inspiration behind Gigi’s simpleton look, but don’t know who half the black celebrities are paying homage too is interesting. You took your time to almost dig for others inspo and relation to the theme and not for others that I easily found in their Vogue interviews. Now I’m not saying it translates, but it’s fit your narrative that at least Gigi could verbally connect her look to the theme although it doesn’t visually. For example, Halle is paying homage to Tina Turner just like other girls did Marilyn, and Gabrielle Union’s basically optical illusion dress…she said its forever changing with every turn..which is very America….(and you actually like that look, so I’d figured you’d listen to her inspiration behind it, and maybe you missed it…but that’s kind of what you do) I expect more from you , hopefully for part 2 the inspiration aspect is more well researched and well rounded when it comes to all ppl you review. Vogue has a post literally just for that specific question for a reason, what inspired your look, and majority of the ppl that didn’t have visually American inspired looks in the video had a answer. Hopefully you watched Emma Chamberlain and Keke Palmer’s Vogue interviews, some celebrities got asked different questions from both Vogue interviews. And this isn’t about race, instead pointing out that you actively found information for certain people that didn’t have a visually American inspired look and didn’t do that for all.
True…. When he kept asking “where’s the reference to the theme” he just kept repeating “reference American designers” but there’s much more to that. I was like uhhhh did you do your research? But much love to him. Just wish he did more research for EVERY person he’s reviewing.
I think you really missed a lot of the references given that this exhibition was about fashion in America. You 1000% let the point of Lupita’s dress fly over your head.
Americans not being self-reflective enough on our own culture and fashion history and just showing up inappropriately dressed is maybe the most American thing ever.
Eee
I HATE how accurate this is. Ugh USA USA usa 🤦🏿♂️
Lol true.
How is that American? You sound ignorant
chris evans should have shown up with his captain america suit, would have been the best outfit of the night 😂

Yep!
Grimes sword was made out of melted guns and I just think that her bringing a weapon to the met is the most American thing
AGREED! Guns and the 2nd Amendment are super American so I think the sword made out of a gun is creative!
Absolutely
@Jen Agrippa next time she should bring a rifle and a deer 🤪🇺🇲😭
her accessories match the theme, but not her dress.
Absolutely queen 👸
the theme wasn’t even “American Independence” it was “America: A Lexicon of Fashion” so it means, american fashion through the years. I feel like Lupita Nyong'o and Quannah Chasinghorse nailed it
That’s just too generic of a theme.
YEP YEP SO TRUE
Ikr! When he mentioned “American Independence” I was a little confused because I only saw “America: A Lexicon of Fashion” being reported. I just kinda assumed that the former could technically fall under the latter with how broad it was. Nonetheless, good point!
either way.... not showing any of it
Bad communication it seems. I mean, i don't know much about galas, but as in any meeting, i would make sure my guests know what it is about and what to do... Even if its posted in the website and etc, its the organizers' job to spread the right information. I get not all the designs show the theme, but many of them dont fit at all lo!
even tho i don't like grimes, but brining weapons to events where weapons are totally unnecessary is the most american thing ever

My brother said that the Met Gala is like comic con but for rich people…. He’s not wrong.
Hilarious 😂
On my part, I'd take Comic Con every time.
at least some comic con costumes are good meanwhile rich people are over here paying millions to dress like ronald mcdonald's ugly little cousin
difference is comic con goers create creative super gorgeous outfits using ultra low budgets. meanwhile, these snobs create garbage outfits with designer logos wasting millions of dollars.
Your brother saw that on a meme
I was so confused looking at the outfits I felt like not a lot followed the theme but maybe i'm incredibly ignorant lol so I cant wait to see what you think about it
Also for those who wear very simple stuff at the Met Gala wHyYYYYYYY it's your opportunity to go OFFFF
no you're right. a lot just wore something they thought looked good and didn't care for the theme.
Am i making any sense, idk. lol
@@Wooplot That's what I thought but that's really a shame knowing how people played the game so well in the previous years
Agreeed - the lack of western wear and Ralph Lauren and old Hollywood over the top glamour but modern made me so bummed. After two years of no fashion, we needed this.
I really think Lupita nailed the theme. Her hair was inspired by artist Lorna Simpson, which is representative of the experiences of black women’s hair in culture. Was excited to hear your point made in the video, just wish more research was done.
Yes. Hers was one of my favorites. Only agree with him about the small detail about it being all denim. But hers was one of the bests.
Lupita Nyong'o is seriously a fashion icon that the world sleeps on. She slays every single time, and I stan!!!
her hair is not fashion her outfit is and it did not suit the theme apart from being denim and black hair does not belong to Americans Its just part of it as much as any other races' hair so everyone there could represent the theme with their hair....erm nope..that's not what the met galas about its about fashion not hair
Rihanna said her look was her elevating the black hoodie into couture, something African Americans are discriminated by police for. I still don't like the look but I appreciate it more now that I know what she wanted it to mean.
I can see that idea on the dress now that I see your comment

47:23 I’m sorry but I feel like you did Lupita’s look and the concept of the look a massive disservice. I feel like it definitely hits the “American independence” theme because lets not forget that cotton, the main ingredient of denim, was an industry built off the backs of slavery. Not to mention, you brought up the idea of taking something iconic to American couture and modernising it. I feel that the denim dress is already a reference to the Britney Spears’ all denim look (an iconic American red carpet moment), but with a modern twist that is that purple(?) diamond-speckled breakage in the denim dress.
But to each their own I guess :(
I was just super bummed that all you had to say was “denim,,, great, thank you.” ;-;
fully agree with this!! her outfit was honestly one of my favourites, imo it was one of the most meaningful and interesting ones
I think he was agreeing that is was an American look because of the denim, he was just unimpressed because it was an ugly dress and not that strong of a connection
@@matthewspinazze4118 It’s the reluctance in his tone when he says “we are hitting the theme…” that didn’t do it for me. He follows it up with “what is it doing, what is it saying, what is its meaning?” which shows that the only connection to the theme he sees is the most obvious being denim. Which to me is such a disappointing take on the look.
The connection doesn’t have to be obvious, imo it’s better when the look subtlety tugs at different references of American couture but also culture. I feel like If he looked into the intentions of the designers, he would’ve been able to pick up that subtle connection ;-;
OH wow I actually didn't really see the detail of the diamond breakage until you mentioned it omfg. That's beautiful.
Very well said. 🙂
bringing a weapon to an event is the most american thing u can do so grimes was pretty spot on.
It was made out of an ar15… it was intentional. When I learned that I was like…. Okay maybe points were made
Right and lots of mass shooting shooters use those rifles too.
Nsjsjskak not american but i think she resembles liberty statue somehow---
@@Simoneslegs exactly the point. The sword is decorative and not sharp. Grimes talked about how it's a project where people relinquish their guns to make these prop art pieces and it makes the world a little safer. Dune is also strongly anti slavery. Her ensemble was all about "fighting" for peace and the future.
@Ferret Mom it's made from a melted down American gun.
the met gala is like spirit week at school, everyone “follows” the theme but nobody, and i mean nobody looks similar.
That is true.
Except for the girls who plan matching outfits with their friends lol
@@myafrorocks That is also a good point there

Ok Barbie Ferreira’s dress was one of the first looks I’ve seen on the red carpet that was made for a plus size woman without making her being plus sized like a gimmick or without trying to hide her body. Like it’s a problem that I struggle to think of many others. She looks incredible, the dress is incredible, and I’m really psyched about where fashion can head toward with the normalization of bodies that aren’t like super model, size 00 wearing stunning pieces of couture like this. It gives ya girl hope!
It is one of the best dresses and she looks gorgeous in it!
Exactly
Obsessed with how perfectly it fit her, like it was designed with a ‘plus size’ body in mind not a size 00 then adapted.
I said she looked like a cupcake in human form with all those wonderful embellishments, and I'm getting shredded on another thread because they think I'm insulting her. I'm 205 lbs myself, she looked incredible. I'm all for big girls getting glamorous. I am one.
The designer (Johnathan Simkhai) is amazing, his design philosophy is aimed at empowering women, his clothing exudes a fierce femininity
idk I wish there was more discussion about Lupita's look besides "it's denim".
(And as for the Slenderman reference... you're absolutely right, I love anything spooky👻)
I just kinda feel like so many people were disappointed this time, not only because so many guests missed the mark (OOF), but also because when they DID hit the mark, it wasn't obvious enough to be easily spoon-fed to the public without a little extra lateral thought...
same and i agree about Lupita too she was paying O Mage to the black 70s with the denim the 80's black scene with the black sparkles - whatever for the flare out the waste look forever but trending it up to just one side like a split theme - I LOVED IT the hair is so American Black scene for years and years just no one wanted to know about it - but now its all about BLACK - I looked at it for a sec will have to go back and have Lupita moment if I can find her on vogue - it seems everyone else got a video - no one will read this so we love it hehe thats what Im saying anywayz (o;

@@fishpacedloveya the designers themselves were referencing old hollywood though. Vogue has a video showing the whole process
@@fishpacedloveya she also mainly discussed old hollywood in her vogue get ready video
Lupita nailed it this year. She was on point with the reference and she looked absolutely stunning in it. I think you didn't do her justice at all!!
I think Rihanna said her look was to represent American black/ urban fashion, with the beanie and the hoodie. The met gala needs someone who approves the looks before celebrities go through with it. Or just stop having themes.
Anna Wintour does that. She also has a say in who is allowed to attend
Maybe next video
YES her look was beautiful and she honored her culture and it smashed the theme.
Nikki tutorials did so well too repping Marsha P Johnson. I can believe he ain’t talk about both of them. They both matched the theme better than anybody
He did say that he will be making a part 2, right? Why didn't he put it up yet m
the fact that kaia gerber and oscar de la renta and FUCKING VOGUE didn't even know the dress was dior and claimed it was halston is so embarrassing. vogue has one job and it's literally fashion.
why has nobody responded to this comment you’re so right
Did anyone actually reference halston? Because it was a great opportunity
Helloooo!!
Because people make mistakes.
I thought that was strange when they said Halston...it's so not.
At this point Anna Wintor needs to approve the outfits before they step onto the red carpet… this was ridiculous. We waited an entire pandemic for this and this is what we get??? Disgraceful.

True💀
1000000000000000 percent. Either our of silliness or irony.
Sonny, I totally agree with you. I also love your name. Cheers.
i completely agree, the theme was so vague that i couldn’t understand as well lmao

Yes! It’s stunning and is a great interpretation of the theme.
I thought it was referencing flappers and the women's independence. But yes, American dream as well!
Great Gatsby shows the facade and emptiness of the American Dream, really.
I interpreted Kim’s dress as a commentary on how influential she is on making culture today, so iconic that we recognise her instantaneously from only her silhouette.
Honestly I thought her look was pretty iconic idk why everyone's hating on it
I was thinking the exact same!!
Also BLM….. blacked out like what was done on profile pics
Not a bad interpretation!
It also could mean how toxic and aggressive is gossip and paparazzi culture and she's trying to hide from them, or maybe about how celebrities are actually the shadow of their character they represent, it also a lot of meanings, but the only sure thing is that she's iconic

Thank you!! So many Americans think they have "no culture" but they are just ignorant about pop culture history 🤣🤣

Ive seen many people discussing the origin in this comment section alone
No one cares about it's origin, it's a sentence and you can't copyright it.
Also seeing anal penetration as a synonym for being humiliated, coerced, dominated... it adds up to the stereotype of gay men being less manly because they get penetrated... As "women" do...
@@blackcat6508 it's a trademarked phrase LMAO you absolutely CAN
I also think Cara was just watching a lot of Drag Race because after Bimini Bon Boulash's similar statements/catchphrase-y takeaways from her time on the show went super viral it's like the whole "___ the patriarchy" is the "it" edgy slang phrase of the season again with no one actually looking into what it means and the origins of it all let alone what the definition of "patriarchy" even is and how it affects fashion in the modern sense, especially in which fashion has been weaponized as a tool of discrimination and oppression throughout time here in America.....it's underwhelming and predictable and basic and boring and I didn't seek out any interviews with Cara but I'll bet you when someone asked her to explain her outfit she probably gave what was from her perspective an empowering iconic feminist statement....and she was probably living in her fantasy blissfully unaware...really thinking that she did something by wearing it......while the rest of us are looking at her like she's one of those people who wear band t-shirts because they think it's cool but can't name a single hit song of said band let alone name one of its members.....it's quite try-hard in my opinion.

Yeah, I know the cut wasn't all that special, but I appreciated Ciara's dress the most, as I think it very clearly nailed the theme.
So essentially what I've gotten outta this is that the NFL has "shiny uniforms" and the Seahawks happen to have the shiny Espeon of the uniforms?
Exactly. Also, it's Russell WILSON that she's married to, not Westbrook as he stated.
As a football fan I was so happy to see Ciara wear this. This was what I wanted to see at the Met. Ciara and Russell Wilson have such a beautiful marriage.

Guns are more American than swords though. The sword looks medieval European more than anything.
“Iris Van Herpen, not Harper
The Met Gala was so bad this year I thought the theme was something along the lines of 'don't leave your comfort zone' or 'bland is beautiful'. I did like Kim's look though, mainly because it looked like death/covid had rolled up to the party.
I feel like people say that every year, but this year really sucked extra. And they had two years to prepare!
Wasn’t she partying during COVID tho?
WTF is wrong with you. 😂🤣😃😄😅
Yeah, imagine referencing yourself, quite meta. However you take it, she is an American icon.
Honestly i don't think it's them. ,,Kanyes" nose is completely different shape
Has it been confirmed it was even her? I havent seen pics yet of her with the mask off 😂
Ahhh Barbie Ferreira’s look is actually one of the most genius, on-theme ones featured in this whole video. It seems like she’s referencing the angelic figure in the portrait that’s become synonymous with Manifest Destiny (just Google that term and the painting comes up first!) which is insanely central to America’s cultural mythos. We stan a political deep cut queen!!
I dont think manifest destiny is something to applaud.....
Wait manifest destiny?? Colonizer chic? :0//
your 'american folklore' is imperialism 💀
On theme but not a great thing to reference
so you know what Manifest Destiny is.. yet you're still acting like it is something positive to applaud? bae..
“Dress like a Tesla or something” SCREAMING
lana del rey wouldv'e ate up the "Americana" theme.. i mean so much of the symbolism and motifs in the beginning of her career she used were "American" or referencing American pop culture (from like the 50's, 60s, old Hollywood as well) not to mention even her more recent releases like Norman Fucking Rockwell have that theme of "American-ness".
I agree Lana Del Ray would rock the americana theme
@@christianrledesma the line about the mask having a lining was a blatant lie. You could *visibly see* that it didn't have a lining.
THIS
I agree 100%
and it was just superhero-y as well
I'm not American either but he does uses the word references alot.. way too much for me to finish the review 😐
Intelligent perception
I was super disappointed about how badly the designers shoved their larger chested women into I'll fitting garmets. I have a large chest and most of the women who had over a c cup was either busting out if their dress or the underside was so poorly made that it was misshapen. Im so tired of designers just designing for women with smaller chests. There are women who have medium sized breasts and so on.
exactly i feel the discomfort on their behalf lol
Awww noo you have it so bad ,It's not like society favors large chested women and hates on small chested ones or anything ;((((
@@Volzotran this is a conversation about fashion not society. Go touch grass
Yasss, Luuuke! Givin' us EVERYTHING w/ this stunning look. 👑❤😍🙌
SIDE NOTE: Ciara was also wearing her husband's superbowl ring
Subtle flex
I’m so disappointed that no one referenced the “we can do it!”-poster (Rosie the riveter)!!! It’s an iconic and easily recognisable look that could have been done in so many interesting ways!
I just had the same thought!
I would’ve been blown away by a beautiful BLM inspired outfits (when I saw Kim K’s that’s what I thought it was)
@@grapesodeypop so many missed opportunities!
@@grapesodeypop there definitely should have been BLM inspired looks, such a disappointing missed opportunity
I appreciate this comment
True
True…. When he kept asking “where’s the reference to the theme” he just kept repeating “reference American designers” but there’s much more to that. I was like uhhhh did you do your research? But much love to him. Just wish he did more research for EVERY person he’s reviewing.
Yes absolutely agree
👏👏👏💯💯💯💯💯
I think you really missed a lot of the references given that this exhibition was about fashion in America. You 1000% let the point of Lupita’s dress fly over your head.
