  • This is rental car number 81. Today I'm driving the 2018 Toyota Rav4 XLE. This is a 5-door compact cross over SUV that seats 5. It also comes standard with Toyota's adaptive cruise control and lane detection alerts. Two new safety technologies that I'm a big fan of.
    I like the Rav4 overall, but I think it's because I generally like Toyotas. There is, however, something missing about this SUV. I'm not sure what it is...but I just don't find this one to be very exciting. Maybe that's just me. What do you think? Please, leave me a comment and let me know. Or, if you don't have an opinion on the Rav4, just say 'Hello'. I'd love to hear from you. Cheers!

    I just bought a 2018 Toyota Rav4 SE trim and love it. I know this vehicle may not be the most exciting option out there, but this is my 3rd rav4, 1st was a 1998, 2nd was a 2008, and my 3rd the 2018 and all of them have been excellent vehicles. To me its more important to have a vehicle that lasts and stands the test of time, and the rav4 is just that. Its a no hassle vehicle that you can count on for many years to come with very little to no issues. Which is why I bought another one.

      @@FxNitr0 The SE rides a little stiffer than the XLE trim but I find it composed and comfortable on everyday drives. I have not found it to be harsh so far.

    Great overview, very professionally presented. Bought my 2018 XLE with AWD in November 2019 and I love it!. It had just under 19,000 kilometres on it. With 13% tax and rust protection I paid $34,000 Canadian. Has all the options you showed, plus heated front seats, steering wheel and windshield wipers (great for freezing rain). Driver's seat is electric. I also have (you didn't show it) the ability to lock/unlock the front doors from outside without using the fob, as long as it's on my person. Was able to get an 8' Christmas tree in the back with no problem (always was able to do that with my departed 09 Matrix, too!). Came with barely worn Continentals, which with the AWD have been rock steady on snow and ice, though I'll eventually replace them with Nokian All Weathers like I had on the Matrix. You're right about it being rather utilitarian. I'm retired and work part time as a shuttler for a major car rental company. The Mazda CX-5 is far more attractive outside, and offers more useful features inside. For example, the heated seats have three settings; Toyota only offers high/low. Little things, maybe, but if Toyota doesn't up their game, Mazda will be eating more and more of their lunch. Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia all offer three setting heated seats, so it's not unique to Mazda. But Toyota still has the edge with quality, reliability and high resale value, and that's what I buy.

    I leased this exact model and trim level in Magnetic Grey. All my friends and relatives are super impressed with the looks. I have had people at the gas station mention what a nice looking vehicle it is. This is my second lease of a Rav4, but all the safety features really make a difference in the safety of the vehicle especially in parking lots. I am very happy with this vehicle and am considering keeping it. Trust Toyota. Oh, free maintenance for 2 years.

      Honda CR-V is far superior. There's a reason the CR-V is #1 in this category. And a reason Toyota is constantly offering 0% financing to motivate people to buy their clunker.

    • @100RentalCars
      @100RentalCars  6 лет назад

      I've never had a chance to drive the CR-V. But I have owed a Civic and an Accord...and I loved them both. So I'm guessing I've love the CR-V too. I just need to find one!

    • @nyed2ca
      @nyed2ca 6 лет назад

      Toyotas are commonly found as rentals, whereas Hondas... rarely. So good luck finding a rental CRV (of course if anyone can - you can! I'm amazed at the wide variety of cars you have already managed to find.) In fact, it is Toyota's Fleet sales which Toyota ALWAYS includes in it's total sales numbers when bragging/claiming various "#1 seller" Awards. Honda dealers do not even have a "Fleet" division. So when factoring out Fleet/Rental company sales and only counting INDIVIDUAL car sales, Honda is usually #1 in sales in most car categories. That is, people who are personally chosing a car to own in the Japanese category more often then not get a Honda... or would prefer to get a Honda if they could afford one. I don't recall EVER seeing Honda offer 0% financing for example. Honda's position is they don't need to give away a product that most want already... or lure them into taking a Honda over another manufacturer's car by making it cheaper. You get what you pay for. Hondas ARE affordable; AND in fact, have the lowest cost of ownership over 5 years versus the competition. But they are not usually the least expensive to get into.

    I just drove one of the first generations in Baja. I really liked it. Super functional and easy to see out of (many modern cars are not). It rode nice. Instruments were clear. Avoid the LE, the XLE isn't that much more. Sucks you are stuck with pumper seats until the SE trim. Getting 32MPG Combined on the Hybrid is doable. Toyota does tend to put cheap tires on these, look at the General AltiMAX RT43's.

    • @100RentalCars

    • @BTC909
      @BTC909 6 лет назад

      No. The JBL sound system does sound a bit better but it isn't worth the trim upgrade + another $875. You can still get a power liftgate on an SE. Limited has chrome wheels which is going out of style. Not a fan of Toyota 360 camera. You do get LED's & memory seats on the Limited. If you drive alot I would consider the Hybrid as long as you can tolerate the skate ramp 2nd row.

      Okay, so you have a 15.9 gallon fuel tank and you should get 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, so let's say you get around 27 mpg on average. 27 x 15.9 is about 430 miles per full tank. If you've already filled up twice, then you may be getting poor fuel economy for some reason. I'd suggest tracking it for another week and, if you're still getting poor gas mileage, maybe get the car checked out. Anyway, that's just my two cents. Let me know how it all works out.

      100 Rental Cars awesome thanks for the advice, I’ll keep a close eye this week. My wife actually drives in the city 85% for all her travels, so with that being said, should she keep her drive mode on eco-mode for city driving? And what about the normal mode driving, whats the normal mode for? Thanks in advance

    • @100RentalCars
      @100RentalCars  5 лет назад

      You can use Eco Mode for city or highway driving. It just reduces the amount of power the car uses to accelerate the vehicle thereby increasing your fuel economy. It's actually kind of fun to try out. Next time you're in the car, accelerate hard in Eco mode, stop, and then do it again in normal mode (or sport mode if you have it). The difference is pretty severe. I keep my Prius C2 is Eco Mode unless I'm have a sudden need for acceleration, like if I'm trying to aggressively merge onto the highway or something. Eco Mode slows down the car, but it drastically increases my fuel economy. I regularly get 65 to 70 mpg in my little hatchback.

Navigation since not Dynamic is lame, but there is also a monthly fee., drives best in SPORT mode, handles very well but need more weight into steering wheel, excellent safety features but keep volume down as can be annoying, Cargo area not really that big so fold down the rear seats. Maybe the Forrester is an alternate choice, the Honda CR-V is better overall but not as reliable as the RAV4. The bads about the interior: front passenger side the extended dash make uneasy leg room for passenger, center console cup/ drink holders especially the one closest to the dash and radio ..it's always in the way so do not place a drink there., Voice recognition does not work well, no Apple Play, sun visors are cheap plastic and feel cheap, back seat the center console piece is unattractive and flimsy, no USB ports in the rear. The Camry is actually fun to drive but does not offer AWD. Don't buy a Hybrid as too many are problematic. Mazda is nice but they going down in reliability and depreciate very fast. Never buy a JEEP or Chevy. So Honda, Toyota or the Lexus brand. Cars are expensive, stay under $30,000 unless you have $600 a month or more to pay for a $30,000 to $36,000 car. Save up and place $5,000 to $10,000 down deposit as it will save you a fortune in Interest Rate/ APR. also Financing get you a low APR of .09 to 1.99 rather than 3.49 and higher.
