You're naturally one of the first ppl I think of when I think eva so I was waiting for this and it was worth. Excited for more anime alphabet
The second person I think of is Endless Jess, naturally.
I think it was really insightful to talk about how what Ano really wanted was to hand over the reigns. I watched a documentary on the making of 3.0+1.0 and I was a little shook at how indecisive and vacillating that Ano can be when so many people are doing so much for him. But when I consider it from the point of view that he is really just pushing all these people and trying to give them as much experience as possible it makes a little more sense. He was constantly talking to the film crew about how he wasn't doing anything and they should be filming the other people.
Tbh watching the original eva and really digging into its themes through analysis such as your own is what led me to becoming more social and ending my isolation. It was like getting so enveloped in a comfy escapism, but reaching the bottom and seeing some of the most alien nerdy weird thing (evangelion) put a mirror to my face and say hey ur getting a little too far pls turn around. It was helpful, and its funny because its a very famous anime, but a little too weird to be watched by people not already into anime. It certainly wasn't my first. Its oddly tailored to anime fans, but ironically sends the message to stop watching anime basically lol.
It should be biggest praise to anime industry that this is so good and diverse you can basically escape from society and feed yourself only with these.
You do exactly the opposite of what the show tries to teach. Running from problems to escape to your happy place is the SAMETHING the main character grows out of.

I agree with the mindset that OG NGE was made for a different audience compared to the rebuilds.
After rewatching all that is Eva I think the original series and movie resonated with me more, as the new movies seem like their pandering to the fans a bit too much, like Asuka and Rei as you mentioned in the video.

I think all the versions are canon, they just happened one after the other. The rebuild is the final chapter of the story, so far.
I hope we get a new wave of experimental anime projects by Khara, Anno and the anime industry in general with the success of Rebuild Of Evangelion(: Do you think Anno will do a original anime project in the future after both Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider???
They're next project is likely going to be a movie about the timeskep period of the Rebuild
I dont think that it would be anything revolutionary. I think its a common misconception that certain author can produce platinum after gold. The circumstances changed drastically after succes and they are rarely good for something original.

7:31 I felt like that the first time I watched the first 4-5 episodes, I totally hated Shinji as a character. But I gave the show a second chance months later, and I started to understand Shinji.
Im always impressed by the sheer amount of influence Anno and eva have had even to the point where I see newer anime fans say more and more insane things like eva was the first anime made for adults or anno created the first lolicons. Even if those two ideas are insane the fact that some people would be willing to even consider that a real possibility just goes to show the effect eva and anno still have on anime fandom and culture

This and the Digimon Adventure video just epitomize what I find so enjoyable about your writing and content more generally; you do an amazing job of putting into words the things I love about media, as well as offering valueable insights and a different perspective. Even though I obviously sometimes have a different opinion of what's enjoyable and why about any given show, I always without fail will find something meaningful in what you have to say. Whether it's a testament to your writing/presentation ability, the levels of analysis/breakdown of key elements to a show, or just the passion and emotion behind it I really appreciate the time and effort you put into all that you do, and I'm proud to call my self a fan and a patron.

16:14 - "[Mari] represents everything Shinji needs to become by the time this whole thing is over." I agree wholeheartedly, I feel like Mari's got a kind of "Nice to meet you again! I'm having a ~wonderful~ time on NewGame+" kind of energy. I'm rewatching the rebuild series, and Mari's realization in 2.0 seems to be that despite all her skill and power and knowledge, despite everything she is, she's not the right person to finish *this* story. She's seemingly already at the end of her character arc, but she's sort of reliving a memory side-by-side Shinji and the rest. She can go back in time and leave hints for Shinji, but Mari can't make the critical decisions, only Shinji can. She can't protect him from this painful journey, *he* has to go through it so *she* can make it out the other side at the end.
Anyway, talking about inkblots can sometimes be more a conversation about who we are than what the inkblot actually is. These films really resonated with me, especially 3.0, which was like a religious experience for me, and 3.0+1.0 was a perfect catharsis after years of engaging with this rich world. I think it's valuable to look at Anno, and other creators, to construct meaning, but I think it can also be just as valuable to look within ourselves and feel out our own interpretations sometimes.
Always a pleasure to hear someone talk about my favorite things. Here's to not being the same person we were when we watched the show the first time!

I hadn’t watched anything eva related until a few months ago. I watch all the rebuild movies first because I thought that they were just HD rehash movies. I’m now a few episodes away from finishing the show and then I’ll watch EoE. I’ll say watching rebuild first has had a weird effect on watching the show for the first time.
This was a mind opening video. I think I will have to think about the rebuilt on my side a bit more to be fully satisfied with my understanding of it. Thank you very much Trixie.

Y'know, for the longest time I completely dismissed the Rebuilds as this weird enigma- a vapid obsession of Anno's akin to George Lucas' seeming inability to just leave Star Wars alone after he made those films up until he sold it to Disney. But watching this has given me a lot more respect for them. I think you put it best when discussing 3.0; that the rebuilds are conceptually sound and thematically rich with substance, both on their own merits and in how it serves as a response to and a companion piece to Neon Genesis, but falter in their execution of a lot of those ideas by way of fleeting-at-best coherency in their writing.
I still don't think I really like the rebuilds, but I can definitely say that I respect them and I'm glad they exist. Unlike Star Wars, which's modern day follow ups do nothing but spit in the face of their predecessors, the rebuilds have total and utter respect for the source material while making commentary on the original which makes it a fine addition alongside it. And for that, it had my utmost respect, at the very least.
As Netflix would say, they are worthy of my grace.

Love that you mentioned Only Yesterday. I just watched it again recently and it's soo good. One of the most true to life stories i've ever seen.
Really cool vid. As a resident Eva unenjoyer, you constantly bring up various aspects to appreciate about the series. I'm willing to love things in things I don't particularly enjoy, and your insight is always a pleasure, something that I felt was a bit missing of late. I used to think that I watched Evangelion to see people fuck eachother up, but lately I've been thinking that I watch it for that, but even more importantly for the very last frame of the very last episode. To see all of that, only to be confronted with the message "Take care of yourself", never fails to make me cry.

Ah my first and favourite analyzer analyzing my first and favourite anime
in terms of cinema enjoyment I'll prefer EoE for how dense & incredible it is, but as stories I love both the original series & rebuilds. they both give such powerful feelings to the viewer, if they're willing to receive them. the original story/eoe is painful, the last time I watched them I had an Intense existential crisis & was miserable about my state as a human being who struggles with hiding myself away from those who may hurt me. the rebuilds give me a sense of peace, though. 'keep reaching out, and in time things will be okay'. and I think that's an intensely powerful message.

It's pretty much obvious that Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (2021) is Hideaki Anno's Swan Song for the Neon Genesis Evangelion Franchise. A farewell to his work that he created 26 years ago.
After watching it three times now I think it is a very good movie and a satisfying conclusion for the Evangelion Franchise.
Considering the fact that I was very skeptical about it because I didn't like the previous movie Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo and my worst fears were that Evangelion 3.0+1.0 will end up like for example How I met your Mother Season 9, Game of Thrones Season 8 or Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (all of those things are a complete trainwreck imo), I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't that.
Is Evangelion 3.0+1.0 perfect? Hell no.
Will it satisfy everyone? Of course not. That's impossible. You can't please everyone.
I for my part was satisfied.
The only problems I have with this movie were some unnecessary fan service scenes, a few 3D CGI fight scenes that looked a bit jerky at times and something that not only applies to this movie, but to the entire Rebuild-Series:
The character of Asuka Langley Shikinami.
She gets not enough screentime and isn’t fleshed out well.
And her backstory....I don't know but I found it weird and unnecessarily complicated. Yes, I know that Shikinami isn't the same character as Soryu from NGE and EoE but I still think that you could have used the same backstory that Soryu already had in NGE and EoE. Or if you really want to create a new one, use something simple.

YES. YES. YES!!!!!!! Love your videos and analysis, so I always look forward to you talking more about Evangelion. And I all of Evangelion, but my biggest problem with it is like with Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and many other media making teenagers out to be way more mature than they could possibly be. Which I get is probably a cultural thing with how much graphic and serious content is allowed in shounen media compared to America.
Well for me personally I really love the Rebuilds regardless of what some people may say. The meta-narrative, particularly the time loop thing is one my favorite aspects about all of it. You can only fully pick up on it only if you watched and read everything from the OG series, End of Eva, and the manga. Which really makes these movies only fully appreciable by Eva fans.
As for early on even in 1.0, you can notice the notable similarities and references to other iterations in Eva, as for example the manga. If you read it you would notice how similar Shinji and Rei were acting more like their manga counterparts, especially with the "hand holding" they did in the end of 1.0, which only happened in the manga prior and was a reoccurring thing.
And others things such as Asuka being more like her manga counterpart in 2.0. Kaji and Misato's son looking very similar to Kaji when his childhood was shown, Kaworu playing the piano, etc. Hell the entirety of the last segment of 3.0+1.0 is the quintessential example of this meta-narrative.
Which for me atleast, implies that the Rebuilds are more of like an amalgamation of everything that came before and as some might say, "Anno's final swan song". As movies I have no idea how I would rate them, because Eva as a franchise for me feels more like an "artistic expression" which I know other works of fiction are also like that, but Eva is the one that is one of the most striking with how much Anno pours his heart out in this franchise.
Even if some people disagree with me and call me pretentious or some shit for saying that, well.... I don't really care at this point to be honest. I fully stand by my opinion. Evangelion as a franchise, is without a doubt one of my most favorite pieces of fiction ever.
Man this is years in the making
My all-time favorite Anime. Having watched the original series when it aired i was 16, and to this day the End of Evangelion movie is still one of my favorite Anime movies eve, but being much older nowadays i have to say that i do love 3.0+1.0 After all these years i think it was the perfect ending for Evangelion... i'm just sad it was the end. Maybe someday, someone will make a completely new Anime in the Evangelion universe who knows?... one can only hope.

I don't wanna call this a correction, but Shinji doesn't choose to keep trying to communicate with others in the Broadcast ending, HE LITERALLY ACCEPTS THE PRIMORDIAL SOUP XD it's such a good but still pretty fucked up ending, so EOE is a better one since Shinji gets his individuality and shit back together, anyone can come back if they want to. So even if it'll be hard for them to rebuild everything as everyone slowly regains their form, it's worth it.
He did chose to live and accepting to face tht made him come out of the soup, and asuka does too. So in the original peoplecan come out of it too.

An interesting idea that comes to my mind is that trying to condemn the anime industry and expecting the rebuilds to conform to some underlying meta-narrative in accordance with the problems Anno addresses is just another way of imitating Anno.
It sounds smart and makes you feel like you're above the masses who indulge in the recursive, degenerate, and unsophisticated side of anime, but really you're just another Shinji pining for Gendo's approval. The approval of Anno who you yourselves asserted you should outgrow.

All that you would do to get out of the recursive pattern is the recursion. So there's nothing you can do and there is nothing you can not do.
My answer is to forget about Anno and his problems and just do what I can for myself and my immediate others. (Although I will inevitably and implicitly draw influence.) The problem cannot be resolved by might.

i personally really enjoyed both the original + EoE, and the rebuild movies. the angel battles (specifically sahaquiel, ramiel, and zeruel) in the rebuilds being my favorites.

This was one the most profound pieces of wisdom I had picked up from an anime, one that fundamentally changed how I viewed myself and others. And it ultimately made me in love w anime in general and "that friend" who was up everyone's ass about why they need to watch anime and stop referring to it as, "that weird tenticle sex cartoon stuff," that most of my friends at the time assumed. It was literally my gateway into viewing the power of a story and capabilities of animation as a legitimate way to speak about deeper subjects than just non-fiction documentaries or the rare "deeper" live action movies. It changed so much for me and I'll always appreciate this series for that.

There's nothing like Eva. It's overblown, detailed, furious, violent and horny. It's just everything. It demands your attention.
Serial Experiments Lain
I'm on the side of having no interest in the rebuilds because the original just kind of *is*. There's a lot that's evidently wrong with it, but the flaws are such an inherent part of it I don't feel any desire to see them removed.
I don't know how to feel in the wake of 3.0+1.0. I liked it more than I wanted to, but that doesn't take it far because once it was over it was mostly out of my mind. While these films were made for a different audience than the show, what audience is that now? I think these fail to resonate with an adult audience and so I'm left with something made for teenagers, and yet this is still eva and I question what teens would want films like these now, and what they get from it emotionally. I say this being the exact age of the target audience when 3.0 came out.

Oooooooooh..... okay, all this talk- I dunno what part of it, has led me to conclude that if there ever is post original 3rd Impact content animated, it should be surrounded with misunderstandings, fear, forgetting, perseverance, and blindness, if you've ever read the fanfiction 2nd Try by JimmyWolk, you should, and I'm thinking a great movie series adaptation would include Shinji and Asuka being blind to how much they misunderstood despite being in whatever state they were in or are in now, including how much they forgot after time has passed, especially the feeling of fear, and also the concept of the fear of forgetting and how it's important to try to remember and presevere despite setbacks, forgetting the most important things, and being blind to the obvious (this really shocked me how this was inherently there in teh fanfiction stoy and I didn't realize until now, being blind to the obvious and revealing what it is would be a great story plot)

I really loved 3.0 because for some reason it felt super hopeful, even though Kaworu is my favorite character his death wasn't really sad to me, more like inspiring. But I hated 3.0 + 1.0, theres too much for a bloody youtube comment but it wasn't satisfying in the slightest

I have to say that I was no surprise by the ending, well, at least the part where Shinji ends with Mary, not that he chose to amends his errors and begin the world all over again, that really take me by surprise, Shinji finally maturing, but the part of Mary, is pretty obvious that the author not want to make decision between Asuka and Ayanami, so he goes for the third option, he wont be the first or the last author do to this, I have to say that at least the manga was more creative in that aspect.
Recommendation K is for konosuba. (Unless there is some requirement you have or your not taking recommendation.)
I think you should try to host these in more than one place even if not removed.
