Can confirm this is true. I wore mine for 32 hours in the course of a few days. I opened my cups to see water! I don't think this is sweat though, I think its the heat of the ears and the coldness of the cups that create the condensation.
Use silicon earpiece covers, they act as a thermal insulator preventing the aluminum from acting as a thermal heat sink, which causes the condensation.
Update: I think this mostly happens when you wash the ear cups. Can confirm it happened to me constantly. I wear them maybe 3 hours a day and when I open the ear cups it is full of sweat
This happens to me all of the time literally just sitting in my room watching RUclips/movies. I don't even have a problem with my head being warm but there's always moisture in there.
This is clearly a condensation issue and not a sweat issue. I’d bet that many other brands of headphones do the exact same thing but because the ear cups are not removable, people are not able to easily check inside to discover condensation moisture. Take for example your how quickly your glasses fog up when you come inside to a warm room after being outside in cold temperatures. The steam and condensation is immediate.
It’s a good thing the ear cups are magnetic and come off in half a second to check. It probably happens to regular headphones but you just can’t check it with the ease that apple makes it.
I had this and it was covered with basic Apple Care as a replacement at least with my local Best Buy they gave me just refurbished replacement and now it’s happening with these. Multiple days cold basement (my room) work on classes about 6-10 hours each. Now they’re clicking with one ear. One ear will go out, then the other, and lastly it’ll say it’s connected play no audio but keep noise canceling off until it disconnects all together. This happened for both my original pair and the new refurbished pair I have now. Thanks for the explanation at least since Best Buy said they couldn’t offer me one. (Also the refurbished me is still hooked up to someone’s find my somehow so no I’m trackable, yay)
I have the same problem with my AirPods Max after two hours of use. I'm not sure about other headphones brands because it's not easy to see behind the earcups.
So I’ve had mine for over a week now , I work in a drs office and it’s about 70 degrees inside. I wore them around the building for no more than 2.5 hours. I happen to take them off and saw some dust around the ear ups so I removed the ear cups to clean out the dust and boom! The inside had SOOOO much condensation. I whiped it all off but noticed there was some inside the drivers through the holes as well. So I put them over a napkin until lunch was over. I was really freaked out because again I’m expecting to at least use these while walking around , I didn’t know I had to sit in bed at 0 movement for these to not get ruined -.- Really want to like them but for the price I’m too scared to keep them. I live in Florida and it’s always humid here so definitely a problem. I texted an apple rep about getting some info on wether these had ANY sorts of protection for ear sweat even if it’s low, because obviously all over the ear headphones get warm after about an hour. But she couldn’t really give me an answer. I’m not kidding though, the picture from Twitter is exactly how my headphones were. I decided to try cutting out a round piece of napkin to put over the driver holes and made sure they didn’t cover the black sensors, and added the magnetic earcups back on, there no sound issue with the napkins inside by the way, they sound exactly the same after multiple testing with them, and so I tried them on again last night for about 2 hours, and they sure as hell did condensate again, but this time it did not go into the drivers the napkins definitely came through for me !
I work out with mine… some times the sweat condensation causes the headphones to glitch out… they’ve always worked when they’ve had time to dry out… pretty dumb they didn’t make them sweat resistant.. ya drops of sweat visible on the drivers and inside the cup.

Happened to me yesterday within 2 weeks of purchasing. The right ear cup eventually started to have a cracking noise and noise cancellation after. I contacted Apple and sent photos they offered to replace after sending the photos. I ended up opting in for a refund as it will just happen with every pair.

Becasue that will determine if im going to keep these.. i dont want to own such equipment and just have apple shrug their shoulders and make up an excuse for not wanting to fix underwarranty etc.
Haven’t worn them for 12 hrs straight, but I have worn them extensively since launch day and I have not experienced this at all. Just checked - no condensation at all. To be fair, I work from home (it’s warm inside so no crazy temperature difference to create an environment for condensation) and I took the lack of water resistance very seriously so these will not be worn when working out. I expect Apple to put out a very cleverly crafted release with suggestions on how to avoid this happening, but they will not admit a design flaw (which is what this most certainly is).
I’ve had this myself, not to that extent but after say 3 hours i had a couple of drops inside. I think it is from body heat condensing on the cold ear cups. I’m in the UK so it’s been pretty cold here too.

I am a UPS warehouse worker and I just discovered this today, our warehouse is cold but the work makes us sweat and this is EXACTLY how my AirPod max look
It has nothing to do with ear sweat. The water forms in the outer part of the headphone, just like a window on a cold day. The outside cold combines with the body heat (not sweat) from the person. The condensation forms on the outer cup (but the inside of it) and then moves toward the driver. Answer is to keep the metal cup warm. I don't know if there are outer covers that would do that. But if they can stay warm this doesn't happen.
I thought these folks had to be doing something weird at first when I first saw this story. It unfortunately started happening to me recently (today). I checked them constantly when I first heard about it (about a month ago) and never saw anything. Today I saw an article about them and decided to take them off my head to check, expecting to see nothing, and there it was…horrifying. I’m contemplating taking them back.

@@ErfonElijah hey. i know this is an old video but i thought i should reach out. i sent mine in last week for a repair. at the time, i hadn't noticed if there was condensation or not so i sent them in listed as "ear detection doesnt work". they were sent for a fix and i was told that the repair wouldnt be covered by waranty as the water sensor had gone off. they claim that i got them wet and therefore i would have to pay to have them fixed. i am going to collect them tomorrow i think so ill probably have a word with them about it. any advice on what to tell/show them to convince them that it wasnt my fault? i think its BS that im being told i have to pay to fix an issue due to a design flaw.
Yeah I'm here because mine are doing this. I wear them inside my apartment working at my computer. I am in Las Vegas where it's very dry. I am not even wearing mine to work out or any other sweat causing activity. Now they will say "connected" but no audio plays and they don't detect that they're on my head. I've tried rebooting/reseting them like 20 times over the last hour or two. Nothing helped. I removed the ear pads and there's a lot of condensation under them. It's weird. Apple better fix this and not say they "don't cover water damage" or something stupid. My AirPod Pro Maxes have never been around water, sweat or even a humid environment. This is obviously the manufacturer's flaw.
So I invested in these - I had one pair for 2 months - “broke” got them replaced - now my 2nd pair is just 1 month old. Just one month and they are broken too. I brought them because the noise cancellation blows other brands out the window - I am the wife of a man who snores. I’ve had Bose 35, 700 and Bose sleep buds - didn’t block him out. Airpod max pros - these were amazing. I would sleep with my headphones one - a good 8 hours a night. Being a woman with hormones - I get nightsweats. They have never been out of the house, been used during exercise, heck they haven’t left my house since being brought. The first set I thought we just faulty - the store ‘John Lewis’ replaced them no questions asked. The replacement pair within a month - stopped working - no sound could be heard from them - same as before. I go to the Genius Bar - my 1 month old £500+ headphones have water damage and this out of warranty - it will cost £230 to replace them. I said how the heck are they water damaged - explained they had never been used outside. He said do you go to the gym? Are you sure they haven’t been rained on? RAINED ON? I said no - He then said you know they aren’t water resistant or waterproof - so rain could effect them…… So lesson for everyone - don’t wear them in the gym, don’t wear them when it’s raining, don’t be warm in a air conditioned room, Don’t use dry shampoo as the mesh gets funky, if you bald and wear SPF on your head and wear your headphones that a no no according to apple too. So basically you can use these if you get Botox to stop you sweating and you sit in perfectly controlled atmosphere INSIDE. If you have the white ones like me you’ll see they get dirty quickly, they rub on your hair and skin - they are dirt magnets and need to be cleaned - unlike many other high end headphones that have leather “water resistant” cups - these are a knitted mesh and foam - which hold onto all that ear sweat and possible rain…… which will happen to everyone if your outside in the summer - you will sweat, the foam pads will draw in that sweat and when they cool down - boom. if you have these headphone - you’re basically burning £500…. From apple direct 👇🏻 Clean your AirPods Max Don’t run your AirPods Max under water. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If your AirPods Max are exposed to anything that may cause stains or other damage - for example, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, perfumes, solvents, detergent, acids or acidic foods, insect repellent, sun cream, oil or hair dye: Wipe them clean with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water and dry with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Don't attempt to use them until they're completely dry. Make sure no liquid gets in the openings. Don't use sharp objects or abrasive materials to clean your AirPods Max. Clean the cushions and headband of your AirPods Max In a clean container, mix 1 tsp. (5 ml) of liquid laundry detergent into 1 cup (250 ml) of water. Remove the cushions from the ear cups. When you clean the headband, hold your AirPods Max upside down to prevent liquid from flowing into the headband attachment point < THIS IS WHERE RAIN CAN DRIP!!!!> Dip a lint-free cloth into the soapy water solution, wring it out slightly and rub the cloth on the cushions and headband gently for 1 minute each. Wipe the cushions and headband clean with a separate cloth that's slightly dampened with fresh water. Dry the cushions and headband with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, making sure you remove any excess moisture. Lay your AirPods Max flat to dry for at least A DAY before you reattach the cushions and use them again.
So I did some digging - as removeable cups and Apple engineering just not realising that hot humid heads release water in an enclosed space - didn‘t add up. Firstly the interior is almost all plastic so I’d question a cool alumnium case being a major factor for humidity - rather the tight noise cancelling air blocking seal of the memory foam cup. As iFixit noted the plastic grill assembly is screwed AND glued in - I’d reason not just to lower their repairability score. Behind the plastic grill is an ultrafine mesh, one that would let sound and air out - whilst repelling water. I’d wager the boffins who made it are employing techniques like in the following link www.cnet.com/news/how-does-waterproofing-work-apple-iphone-7-samsung-galaxy-s7-sony-xperia/ to prevent ingress from the limited amount of moisture to be expected from hot heads. And that the ear cups are removeable for easy wipe cleaning and (expensive) replacements as required. And this also explains the taped and screwed plastic grill - it’s a gasket around the edge of the cup... No one is claiming water resistant headphones - there are too many mic holes around the exterior - but seemingly there IS a solution transparent enough for sound but repellant enough for water when worn.
Well here I am writing about wastin 600$ , I live in a super humid country and wore those everywhere, unfortunately a couple of weeks ago I got major major connection issues , the headphone with connect and disconnect on their own ,once finally connected no sound would play ,there is also this weird “mode” when it sometimes connects but every time I play something the left speaker would start off at max volume and make a mound bang sound and then settle back in , after some searching on every online form I could find I would say this is a 100% condensation problem , apparently some people tried taking of the speaker part and cleaning the connectors with isopropyl alcohol, which is what I plan to do next but my headphones are pretty much toast and this was so disappointing. I had the Sony XM3’s before this which broke the headband with its cheap plastic and the earcups would tear constantly but had great audio ,so I thought hey the AirPods max are metal and the earcups are easily replaced and there is no way they mess up a simple thing like Bluetooth and connectivity and audio…….holy shit really??? The whole company is moving in the direction of wireless connection ,you’ve removed the headphone jack and plan on possibly removing the charging port for fucks sake ,how can you mess this up so badly ,your headquarters is in a humid place how is it possible no one stress tested them outside or even inside and noticed this
It’s condensation not sweat. Do you have a pair? I was thinking people had to be sweaty or super hot because it doesn’t happen to me, but today for the first time ever, I had the issue. No working out, no sweat, nothing, just started happening.
Hi Elijah this has happened to me after wearing them for just 1 hour and the sweat does effect your Airpods Max mine stopped detecting my ears now and I’ve spoken to Apple and getting a replacement
Schweddy Cups, lolz 😝 Seriously, I’ve been waiting for mine from Best Buy, ordered three weeks ago, shipped via usps two weeks ago. USPS tracking says delays because of the pandemic, but I’m starting to think they were stolen.
This whole thing sounds bizarre. First we had bendgate with the iPhone, now sweatgate with the AirPod max. With the phone it turned out to not be a big deal. I suspect this won’t be a big deal either.
So far five or six people have confirmed they are having the same issues. No permanent damage at this point but it’s concerning. Seems to only affect those who wear their Max for longer periods of time, like 3-4 hours at a time
@@ErfonElijah thanks for your note. I ordered a pair but cancelled after reading all the scary tweets. I am waiting for ‘Apple to address this situation. I really want them.
This happened to me today - not covered by the warranty for a pair of headphones that cost £500 - they wanted me to pay £230. The genius at the G bar said- no they are not water proof or sweat proof - I said so I can’t wear my headphones outside in case it rains ? - he shrugged.

This has ruined my AirPods Max, sent back to Apple and they said they couldn’t not be repaired. So my $600 headphones have been thrown away in the trash after only being a year old.
Do you know the amount of people in apple that have been using them for so long before releasing to the public.... mmmmmm it sounds to i wanna get public , that guy throw water to them
Im so glad i held off on buying these after hearing this...lol...sounds like a design flaw. I hope they can fix it and put out a revised version and if they do id be glad to get a pair!
I can't imagine something like this happening. Especially other people who have bought and used their AirPods Max and no one else has complained about something like this.... doesn't that make you kinda think? 🤔 ...plus those photos looked like someone just sprayed some water there after taking off the ear cups cuz from other videos those ear cups look thick.
I talked to the guy and I didn’t get the sense that he was lying, but anything is possible. I mean, look at all the 💦 in those cups! That’d be a lot of ear schwed!
12 hours is a bit much... next software update they'll need a warning message like the decibels warning, lol. Give your head and ears a rest. The 20-hour battery life isn't meant to be used up all in one session!
Apple should have more self awareness... Their accountant controled company often lacks ability to make products that are thought through on behalf of the customer. I would rather like to see Apple improving the iPhone 8 Plus hardware, maintaining the user interface...
@@ErfonElijah no I was inside using them for work temperature is about 70 degrees Fahrenheit inside. Granted I was using them pretty much the entire work day with breaks so about 8 hours. I’m not even a very sweaty person but maybe I have a hot head. LOL
Same thing happens to mine. Just bought them. Use at my desk in a climate controlled environment. I am not sweating. At all. Still no response from apple. Happens within 30 minutes to an hour.
Wore mine 12 hrs, after owning them 6 months. They started to crackle on the right side and then died. Took the cups off on they were filled with water!!! Thank goodness I had insurance on them. I was gaming I a cold room my ears don’t even sweat, totally crazy!
I call bullshit, what made him even remove the cups to look for moisture to begin with? Also people the left and right drivers are sealed (speaker cones don’t have holes - except for the coil opening and that usually has a dust cover made of paper or type of polymer) however this doesn’t mean that condensation couldn’t form on the inside casing being closer to the external metal colder casing, then I could see it being an issue but not between the ear cup and speaker driver itself.
Can confirm this is true. I wore mine for 32 hours in the course of a few days. I opened my cups to see water! I don't think this is sweat though, I think its the heat of the ears and the coldness of the cups that create the condensation.

@@boz- what did they end up saying and how much did they want to charge you for the repair ?
Happened to me. My driver had a red ring now on the inside
OMG i literally just looked 5 sec ago inside mine and there is condesation too wtf.
My have had water damage after 3 months. Only wore them inside. Apple warranty never covered them so £549 out of pocket.
Definitely want an update👍🏾
Question : Is the part with the holes (where the water is) is also aluminum ?
Yeah whole inner and outer cup are aluminum.
@@ErfonElijah They should change that. I think the inner part should be plastic. It is much less heat conductive than aluminium.
Happened to me for the first time today. Wore them outside FOR ONLY 2 HOURS.
RAINED ON?
I said no -
He then said you know they aren’t water resistant or waterproof - so rain could effect them……
So lesson for everyone - don’t wear them in the gym, don’t wear them when it’s raining, don’t be warm in a air conditioned room, Don’t use dry shampoo as the mesh gets funky, if you bald and wear SPF on your head and wear your headphones that a no no according to apple too.

Clean your AirPods Max
Don’t run your AirPods Max under water.
Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
If your AirPods Max are exposed to anything that may cause stains or other damage - for example, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, perfumes, solvents, detergent, acids or acidic foods, insect repellent, sun cream, oil or hair dye:
Wipe them clean with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water and dry with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
Don't attempt to use them until they're completely dry.
Make sure no liquid gets in the openings.
Don't use sharp objects or abrasive materials to clean your AirPods Max.
Clean the cushions and headband of your AirPods Max
In a clean container, mix 1 tsp. (5 ml) of liquid laundry detergent into 1 cup (250 ml) of water.
Remove the cushions from the ear cups.
When you clean the headband, hold your AirPods Max upside down to prevent liquid from flowing into the headband attachment point < THIS IS WHERE RAIN CAN DRIP!!!!>
Dip a lint-free cloth into the soapy water solution, wring it out slightly and rub the cloth on the cushions and headband gently for 1 minute each.
I’d wager the boffins who made it are employing techniques like in the following link www.cnet.com/news/how-does-waterproofing-work-apple-iphone-7-samsung-galaxy-s7-sony-xperia/
to prevent ingress from the limited amount of moisture to be expected from hot heads.
The whole company is moving in the direction of wireless connection ,you’ve removed the headphone jack and plan on possibly removing the charging port for fucks sake ,how can you mess this up so badly ,your headquarters is in a humid place how is it possible no one stress tested them outside or even inside and noticed this
That guys ears sweats that much? I highly doubt that is real.
It’s condensation not sweat. Do you have a pair? I was thinking people had to be sweaty or super hot because it doesn’t happen to me, but today for the first time ever, I had the issue. No working out, no sweat, nothing, just started happening.
yes, its killing headphones. lost 2 already. now searching for heater so they can be warm
Hi Elijah this has happened to me after wearing them for just 1 hour and the sweat does effect your Airpods Max mine stopped detecting my ears now and I’ve spoken to Apple and getting a replacement
Let me know if that fixes it. I bet you’ll have the same issue. I don’t think Apple has realized this might be an issue.
@@ErfonElijah yes I will let you know if that fixes even I think Apple didn’t realise that this would happen
@@nwa0873 me either! I think in 3-6 months we’ll start seeing people have water issues on a larger scale
Sadly this as been happening to me.
Schweddy Cups, lolz 😝
Seriously, I’ve been waiting for mine from Best Buy, ordered three weeks ago, shipped via usps two weeks ago. USPS tracking says delays because of the pandemic, but I’m starting to think they were stolen.
I love mine, and they haven’t gotten schweddy on me. But I haven’t used them in the cold. I’m gonna try it and see if they start schwedding up.
The only way too stop all that WATER in your AirPods is have the occasional shower 😘
my maxes do this after literally just half an hour or so ffs
I think I need to get apple care because I am getting my airpod max today delivered.
Not to mention how heavy they are¡
Me: My AirPods max suddenly stopped working!
Apple Genius: The moisture sensors are positive, so not covered by warranty.
Lol what did this actually happen to you??
This happened to me today - not covered by the warranty for a pair of headphones that cost £500 - they wanted me to pay £230.
The genius at the G bar said- no they are not water proof or sweat proof - I said so I can’t wear my headphones outside in case it rains ? - he shrugged.
It represents or is a simulator device like a quantum computer that has to be cooled down to work
Sound theory! 😂
Yea that’s why I just paid the extra £50 for apple care too
Apple, let’s make our $550 headphones look premium by using aluminum
Physics, aluminum will cause condensation
After 2 years my max stopped working because of this. Apple wanted to charge me $300 for repair 😂
My AirPod Max do this after about 1.5 to 2 hours of listening.
Use silicon earpiece covers, they act as a thermal insulator preventing the aluminum from acting as a thermal heat sink, which causes the condensation.
Just put a tissue or foam on that internal part
that mic is ridiculous! Bigger please!
Never trust a tech reviewer with a tiny 🎤
Why don’t you try yours ?
I’ve checked mine a bunch no sweat. Y’all got some sweaty ass ears. Shit.
It's not sweat it's condensation.
This has ruined my AirPods Max, sent back to Apple and they said they couldn’t not be repaired. So my $600 headphones have been thrown away in the trash after only being a year old.
Must have AppleCare
But I don’t think that’d cover “water damage” lol
Hmmm...so in short, plastic premium headphones are still the best even 12 hours and beyond.
Do you know the amount of people in apple that have been using them for so long before releasing to the public.... mmmmmm it sounds to i wanna get public , that guy throw water to them
yes I'm having the same problem
What’s going on with yours? Any malfunctions?
@@ErfonElijah no. not at all. only use mine 4 hours a day
@@djgeeandcompany7856 how much schweat is getting in there? Is it the same as the pics in my vid?
@@ErfonElijah ohhhh no loll ...very light
I thought it was bullshit until I bought a pair and it happened the first day to me as well. Not that much water, but plenty.
I have actually experienced this but to a much lesser extent. I noticed a small amount of condensation today. This video prompted me to check. lol
Crazy! Were you using them in a cold location?
@@ErfonElijah no I was inside using them for work temperature is about 70 degrees Fahrenheit inside. Granted I was using them pretty much the entire work day with breaks so about 8 hours. I’m not even a very sweaty person but maybe I have a hot head. LOL
Lacking sweat resistance at 549 lol 😂
Pathetic
@@estebanvalle715 😂
Same thing happens to mine. Just bought them. Use at my desk in a climate controlled environment. I am not sweating. At all. Still no response from apple. Happens within 30 minutes to an hour.
Wore mine 12 hrs, after owning them 6 months. They started to crackle on the right side and then died. Took the cups off on they were filled with water!!! Thank goodness I had insurance on them. I was gaming I a cold room my ears don’t even sweat, totally crazy!
It’s sucking your brain juice out!
Calling it BS
Nope happened to me
Pretty sure this is fake and the guy is trolling.
Possibly but his Twitter thread has other users now confirming the same issue
It’s not fake. I’ve seen it on my AirPods Max now. Needs around 2 hours on head to start building up.
Not fake. Happened to me. My drivers have a red ring on the inside now
So it has been over three months now and I’m starting to seriously doubt that this is actually an issue, I think I will buy them again.
OMG!!!
Also, can you say spritzer and agenda much?
Free water 💦
Apple is Jesus.
Problem is real thou many people complaining right now.
Am I need to shave to bald 👨🦲 for less sweaty 🥵
SWEATY AF 12 HOURS😂
