It's like those childhood moments when my family is returning home from a holiday trip and I sit on a backseat of our car, phasing in and out of sleep. The sudden changes in pitch and tempo reflect that wavy state of consciousness where background voices and music from the radio blend into an unrecognizable soundscape in my dream.
YES, that's the nostalgia for me (especially since I traveled a ton as a kid), and this is why this is by FAR my favorite song without vocals, and one of my favorites ever.
I can't really describe how this song makes me feel... the sudden speed ups and slow downs are jarring enough to be unsettling, but the instrumental is calm enough to relax me. The entire track just feels so eerie to me
To be honest, I was on board with the speed ups and slow downs early on, but I wish they didnt use it all that much. I get that it feels like cassette or vhs tape.
@@TemporalCollage @Eric Wolf DUDE YEAHH!! I feel the exact same way about this song!! Really crazy what they are able to do with only changing the pace during the tune, right? But I also noticed those changes of the key during the chorus (1:40), that make me feel so very relaxed and chill at the same time hahah! Really fascinated about their music
As @Strachi said, it gives it that "the VHS got eaten by the machine that one time and we had to respool it" feeling. It's a nostalgic feeling I've not felt for quite some time.
You'll be ok Ian, I assume if you like the Midnight you're a good person so you'll find someone that loves you like you deserve. Hope your weekend goes well.
I just don't think there is a band out there that is as well rounded as The Midnight. The feel of the music, the concept art, they are just the full package. What an experience....
The opening sounds like some nostalgic dream. With a video game you would sleepily play in the back seat of your parents car drawing endlessly homeward, with a neon landscape and rain that drips on the window. The soft hum of some forgotten song of childhood.
I'm not going to lie... this god damn song... between the song and the image above hits me RIGHT in the feels... makes me get teary eye'd... jesus christ I need to get it together. God speed everyone.
Tim said on instagram that this track was "very internet'y". I'm trying to dissect what i'm hearing here. In one sense, is it representing what it was like being on the internet in the early 90s with the connection...sometimes moving right along, sometimes fast...sometimes super slow. Then in another sense, this is what being a teenager feels like as well. Or maybe I'm just trying to read waaaay to much into it. Whatever it is...it's a great ambient track. One of my favorite's on the album.
At first, I thought about the tempo changes as random, but then intentional. And since the name of the track is a font, I wonder, maybe the tempo is meant to convey that feeling we all had when we used Word back in the day and couldn't settle on a font while trying out a couple (tempo changes), but ultimately, we all settled on Helvetica.
I remember my first experiences on a PC as a kid -- I was floored by the fact that I could create perfect letters instantly with the press of a few buttons! I spent so many hours going through all of the fonts and playing around with the WordArt features in MS Word 2003. I remember I would try to draw the user interface of Word from memory when I wasn't around the computer. Funnily enough, I don't think Windows ever bundled Helvetica by default, but MacOS surely had it.
Oh the typeface, duh. My head was somewhere else. Helvetica/Helvetia are old Latin names for Switzerland in Roman times. Typeface makes waaaaaay more sense.
Damn.... This certainly takes 1st place as the oddest track in the album. It is indeed very unique, and I say that in a good way. All the changes in tone and beat up until the very end threw me off completely. Hope I'm not the only one that feels that way.
@@_carnage2v927 I don't think an artist is defined by what their defining songs sound like but rather the flavor they are known for showered over changes in genre. In this case, chillstep? You still have those rumbly smooth synths in many of their tracks and their lyrics are a callback to a memory or a love we never have experienced, but would like to.
I usually find myself liking the weirdest songs. The same happens when I listen to Dance Gavin Dance. Eagle vs Crows was my favorite track on Instant Grat, but most fans say that one sucks because it's disjointed and weird, and I'm like, "That's exactly why it's my favorite!" Helvetica is that song for me on this album.
Is anybody feeling a Resident Evil vibe from this? The first Resident Evil game on PlayStation & Saturn, like just after going out the back door to the guardhouse?
This song sounds like the save room theme from Resident Evil 1. And actually gives off a very similar feeling. Somewhat protected and safe, but also very eerie and concerning reminding us of the bittersweet feeling that is being a teenager. The change in tempo really adds to that.
This reminds me slightly of resident evil when in the typewriter saving your game, very relaxing music, except the synths in this etc make it epic as usual , the beat just adds whole other dimension to it too. Very soothing
For some reason reminds me of an interactive encyclopedia cd-rom from the 90s that I used to use when I was a kid. I actually have no recollection of whether it had music or not, but this track transports me vividly back to gazing mesmerized at the FMV of a pyramid on that old CRT screen.
This reminds me of something I heard waaaaaaay back in the day on an episode of Salad Fingers, the leading melody sounds a bit like an Aphex Twin track
1st listening... Yes weird 2d time... Still weird 3rd... have a request! Can we listen to this one in data painting. Amazing canvas have been made by Refik Anadol 💙

has the same vibe as those "oddly familiar places that make you feel mildly uncomfortable" videos
@@Aravestia that is INCREDIBLY accurate when I think about it. Definitely puts the vibe into words

I love how the tempo fluctuates throughout. It makes the song feel like an intriguing (yet calming) journey.
Just went through a breakup recently, been really depressed but The Midnight has helped me through it I don't know where I'd be without them
Me too brother... 4 years and was about to propose... yet The Midnight maneged to keep me uplifted with their tunes. Keep going strong mate.
You'll be ok Ian, I assume if you like the Midnight you're a good person so you'll find someone that loves you like you deserve. Hope your weekend goes well.
I know that feeling. Same thing going on.
Don't worry Ian. Sometimes they come crawling back to ya. Keep your head up.
Hey man, girls come and go. You’ll find another one eventually and maybe she’ll be the right one for you. Keep your head up Ian.🤘

Wait until you see them live. These guys are in a league of their own. It's criminal how underrated they are
Check out September 87, similar 'full package'. Sadly only a couple songs/videos though
@@ormox I will thanks!
You ought to listen to Gunship ... You'll love them as well, trust me.
Not a band, but a composer, Yuzo Koshiro, is up there with The Midnight when it comes to instrumentals.

Those posters on the wall remind me of so many things. Everything about the room. Reminds me of my own small room when I was a kid. 😢
There is this strange, unique aura coming off of this song, it's beautiful
the tempo keeps changing and it makes it feel like time is running out but also like im early?
video games tactics!
It's like finding a vinyl and not knowing if you should play it on 33/45 because both sound good.

You're supposed to read into it. The Midnight is deeply DEEPLY introspective music. It's good shit.

The opening sounds like a cross between Reading Rainbow theme and Rush's The Camera Eye. Brilliant!
Ready Player Two
Omfg I was thinking the same thing but Reading Rainbow and an educational video during World Cultures class in high school instead lol
I'm a instrumental musician/artist...I must say although I love Tyler's lyrics and voice....The Midnight's instrumentals r very special to me!!!!!👍🏽❤️
This song.....i cant explain this connection i have to it....it speaks 1000 words, with no lyrics.
Resident Evil 1 safe room meets donkey kong 👍👍👍
I also thought of the resident evil remake save room

This song comes right out of a Donkey Kong Country level set in a night jungle!
I thought the exact same thing.

It was probably video game inspired. Like a donkey Kong country track
Super ethereal. I'm digging the warped tape vibe so much more than I thought I would.
Helvetica qualifies as an Act of Minor Genius. Reminds me of Max Cooper, if Max Cooper ever had a day where he wasn't having an existential crisis.
always come back to this song. it makes time stand still for some reason and feel like everything is going to be okay
A night drive with this 👌🏼🎶🎶🙏🏻🧎🏻🪐

Same vibes as Aquatic Ambience and Stickerbrush Symphony
Childhood memories, Donkey Kong Country😊

The Midnight just releases pure gold every song of this album
This is becoming my favorite song on the album.
One of my new favourite bands! Pure genius and nostalgia
This song can never be loud enough
I could easily see this in a vintage game where you’re alone in an island trying to find the hidden portal who made you appear in this paradise
this needs to be a game wow
I appreciate my love for music and for fonts colliding like this.
Unique and beautiful
This sounds like the forest level theme from some beloved, but deeply obscure SNES game.
So this is how im starting my morning off to work dabbing and i feel this through my soul thank you MK!!!!
This song cements my love for The Midnight. Every song they make evokes so many emotions, and this one takes the cake.
Can't get to sleep for the past 2 days now after listening...
I feel so much freshhh..

Pushing the boundaries of synthwave, love this!
Buffffff. Just listened to it three times. Just a piece of art. Wonderful track guys...maybe one of the best of the album.
God bless this talented artist🙌
Art is back in music. Thank you The Midnight for raising the bar. It was dearly needed.
Imagining a martial artist training montage to this track, Bloodsport style. Amazing album once again Tyler and Tim!
Imagine a Midnight collab with Mitch Murder. Synth vibes like never before heard. Reminiscent of "Someplace Else"
This music is something out of Electronic Gems-like masterpiece... very soothing and hypnotic.
This work with pitch shifter just amazing. So simple, but so fucking amazing !
This song makes me remember those special places that I can only visit through memories... a painful visit followed by solitude
This track impressed me seriously, i cant say that previous ones from this album are not good but this one without a doubt my favorite
i have no idea how this came up as a related video to what i was watching before but god damnnnnnn this song just hit me in the feels
I see the author was inspired from Resident Evil 1 Saveroom music.
This makes me nostalgic. The vibes are amazing. Good work once more!❤️🔥
its reminds me of Japan Night City :)
Love this! 💜 takes me back to my favorite time-the 80s 🙌💫✨
This whole song reminds me of old VHS tapes and MS paint and I'm very okay with it...
really sounds early 90's. i love it. was anticipating so hard when this album dropped. did not disappoint.
I have GOOSE BUMPS AND CHILLS FOR THIS BEAUTY WHAT A TRACK!!!!!

LMAO EHAT 😂
What it was a font in Word forever...

Just awesome.
when those synths come in at :52 my soul starts getting massaged
I like the tempo changes. They are creepy af though at times. Doesn't matter, I'm vibin'

if you have a lot of imagination, you already felt like the whole world is more colorful, i saw neon lights around the city
Bruh I’m too high for this song lol 😂
Lmao I listened to it high and i was like HOLY FUCKING SHIT
This is fantastic!!!
One of the best songs on Monsters. First time i think "höö what the hell...." It's something special that i didn't expected
Gracias por tanto!!!
Nostalgia hits me harder than sadness....it can just hurt sometimes.
Best song about a font. Definitely sounds like a MOD or S3M module file from the early 90s played on an underspecced computer.
pure Tangerine Dream... 👍👏👏👏❤
YES!
😳 i remember hearing tangerine dream on the Sorcerer and think this sound cannot be from the 70's
This song plays when your thinking about younger nights long gone, but somehow those memories lurk in your thoughts late at night

Normaly like lyrics, but this is immense, just like collateral

Wow was not expecting those pitch changes. I would love a reprise version from 1:42 to 3:23.
I think it's called Helvetica because it represents the internet and how so much of our life online is written in Helvetica font.
Weird Spotify Playlists says: "Oh Actually Shit I Do Like Helvetica" And that's the way it is!
Another masterpiece by Tyler and Tim!
An immediate recognition of, the quickening.
