Do the Psalms teach us how to be joyful? They absolutely do. Joy is different, of course, than happiness. Happiness depends on mood or circumstances. Joy comes from what we believe. Did you know that some of the psalmists' most joyful exclamations appear in Psalms that vividly describe depression? In Psalm 3, David's entire nation has betrayed him - led by his own son. They are mocking his failure and throwing rocks at him. Rough day! In the midst of all this, he says, "But You, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head" (vs. 3). Amazing! Psalm 13 begins "How long, O LORD, will you forget me?...How long...must I have sorrow in my heart all the day?" (vs. 1-2). It ends with "I will sing unto the LORD, for He has dealt bountifully with me" (vs. 6). That's quite a turnaround in four verses. Psalm 22: "Why have you forsaken me?...my heart is like wax; it is melted within me" (vs. 1, 14). By the end, worship: "From You comes my praise in the great congregation...all the families of the nations shall worship before You" (vs. 25, 27). Now there's some perspective! What do these Psalms teach us? It's that Biblical worship brings us into right belief about God, and that right belief cultivates joy - no matter what the circumstances. Will all your problems be solved? No. But He will lift your head, raise your soul from the pit, and clothe you with joy - the real kind. This is my prayer for you today: that your worship be will immersed in the truth of His Word, and that He would multiply your joy to the glory of His Mighty Name!! I hope this encouraged you!!
