If I sound too bullish on nuclear power and downplaying nuclear disasters, it's because I go up against the arguments every single day, and it can get frustrating. I apologize. Happy to wrangle brain cats whenever you need me bois. This was fun.

the "glowing goo" trope, if I recall correctly, came from glowing radium paint which was radioactive, toxic AF, and mixed up in big vats in factories to paint instrument panels in naval vessels (esp subs) during the war, before making it's way onto watch faces by way of poisoned women...

I live near Soudan, Minnesota. There's an underground mine there that's been closed since the 60s, but was donated to the State of Minnesota, and they run tours of the historical mine operations. Also, the U of M and some other scientific organizations built a neutrino detector in a giant cavern at the bottom level of the mine, half a mile underground. A neutrino beam was shot through the ground at the detector, from Chicago if I remember right? The experiment was to figure out if neutrinos have mass. But they chose that particular place because of the depth of the mine and the fact that all of the equipment is working and well-kept. The lab was deep enough that it was completely insulated from cosmic radiation.

On the driving topic, I think it's 'funny' that Minnesota has issued a new program where state troopers are trying to cut down on speeding on rural roads; meanwhile, all major highways have recently been bumped up to 60 mph. Now people drive 70 mph on highways, many of which are rural. Like, how is that program going to be successful? **major eye roll**
Meanwhile, a hill I will die on is that I think the US needs to re-evaluate drivers every 10-15 years. Written and/or practical exams. Don't pass, you pay a fine or lose your license, etc. Granted, haven't figured out how to keep those that have lost their license from still driving. Also provide more services for the elderly to get places so that they don't HAVE to drive starting at 65. The US has huge swaths of the country that doesn't have public transportation and that really impacts the number of people that have to drive when they probably shouldn't.

I grew up in the early 80s and the term indian giver was used a lot. As was said the meaning was that someone is taking back something that was previously gifted or sold. In elementary school, long before learning the colonizer version of manifest destiny, but right after the heroic bloodless version of Columbus "discovering" America, the veiw of Native Americans was built on the offensively biased and grossly oversimplified story of the first thanksgiving where the Disney Peter Pan style "Indians" welcomed the pilgrims and gave them food and later gave or sold us land (both stories were perpetuated) but later on made war with us to take it back.

@Kylehill I really appreciated your seriousness about all of the ai and nuclear talk. I am curious, how do you manage thinking about all of these huge existential threats to society? It feels so easy to sink into denial about the problems/ turning a blind eye/ a depression that nothing can be fixed because everything is outside of our control. I think I am generally an optimistic person, but it is very sobering when I am directly confronted with these facts that are true... anyways, great episode, hope to meet you at Open Sauce! Thank you for all you do.

    • @Verchiel_
      @Verchiel_ 6 месяцев назад +1

It's a hard term to sell but just
      Try to be realistic
Acknowledge the good and the bad, don't deny the potential future atrocities while not forgetting that positive things also exist.
Choosing what to care about also helps. Your life takes priority, you might not be able to convince the world nuclear energy is a good road to head towards, but you can certainly work on your health and wealth.
The healthier and wealthier you are, the easier it is to make an impact in the world.
I don't recall the term but there's a way of thought adjacent to nihilism, which dictates that life doesn't have an inherit purpose and nothing really matters, so you should just take in the pleasures of life and do as much stuff as you can for the fun of it.
There are plenty of avenues you can look towards to help ease existential dread.
Or watch some kurzgesagt videos if you feel like indulging in it instead.

I feel like y'all went a little overboard on the bs this episode. There were many times I was actually invested in the conversation and it was kind of forced off the rails. Believe me I love this show for that reason, but mostly with topics that aren't all the serious or relevant. I think Kyle was really trying to spread some good information here and was hard to get through the bs. I would have like to see more of tone y'all took with Vsauce Michael, more chill really trying discuss the topics.

There was a decent spread of info if you focus on it, lets not forget that this podcast was never about being serious. Moreso people capable of being very serious going off the rails. Kyle has a number of videos going in more depth about most of what was touched on, you're free to look more into his stuff since you seem curious.

@jyrolys6 why are you defensive over him pointing somthing out that most likely was a problem for others in the audience. Your comment is irrelevant.

@@SFE3610 Just highlighting misplaced expectations, is all. Safety Third was always like a lighthearted hangout we're allowed to watch/hear. Levels of goofing around being up there is nothing new. Don't remember which is more common, them introducing a guest or forgetting. That's another indicator of how laid-back the format is.
