I wouldn’t ordinarily approve of doing something outrageous to an E-Type but being a massive long term fan of Harold and Maud, I still watch it regularly, I have to say that I think this is just wonderful - bravo!
Everyone spazzing out about "what he did to an E-Type!". What he did was take a horribly neglected and trashed Jag that someone else didn't give a shit about and passionately turned in to something that turns more heads than 90% of operating vehicles on the road. If he had restored it to original, nobody would even know about it. Nice work buddy!
Does it really matter wether the internet goes crazy about a build? I understand your point, but too many people do things to get noticed and "turning heads". That said, he did save an E-Type from neglect
Anyone complaining about this Jag hearse build, does not know Jaguar is offering to take perfectly good E-Types and convert them into all electric drivetrains. Which surely, there will be defenders of that, but this is a 71 Series II, it's not a series I. This works perfectly for what it is, when we lost the original in the first place.
@@queefreak666 true but art is in the eye of the beholder and his work is to honor a move from my point and to me the movie is like a old world master panting. true art
Superimpossible - He kinda messed it up though. The one in the movie's roofline sloped down about ten degrees and the kink in the rear tailgate didn't stick out as much and wasn't as high up.
No Brakes Yeah, Ruth Gordon in real life had no use for the common practice of ignoring people who were “old”. She was decades ahead of her time. Now it’s understood, by thinking people anyway, that the years do not deprive an active and intelligent person of continuing to be a sexual, emotional human being. Life is a journey to be enjoyed all the way through. And when my time comes, transport me to the cemetery in that E-Type!
I'm 64 now, and when I saw the movie Harold and Maude for the first time ever on TV, it really blew me away. But at the end of the movie I was then, and still am today, heartbroken that the beautiful Jaguar had to be destroyed. I am all the more grateful to you for bringing the car (even if it is a different one) back to life. Thank you very much.
Im glad to find this MASTERPIECE!! I was trying to discover what happens with the original XKE of the movie and this!!! I find this WONDERFULL gift!!! CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU!!! FROM ALL OF US WHOSE LOVE HARRY AND MAUDE
I want to say I didn't see Harold and Maude until some time in the early eighties and I was instantly bowled over by how great it was. I also could not believe that I had never heard of the film prior to that. I still consider it to be a great film. On the other hand the E-type has always been one of my favorite car designs of all time. Seeing one turned into a hearse was always jarring to me, still, it did fit the theme of the movie and it IS a Mark II... As I recall, for a long long time a Mark II wasn't even close.
These comments... I hate seeing people who can't respect another persons car even if they don't like it. Those people are in my opinion not real petrolheads. The car looks amazing, btw.. Love seeing people daring to be different in the car community and making their dream car.
The E type is all curves why adding this ugly "thing" in the back? You're very arrogant to say that people who dislike this "modification" of a perfect car are not real petrohead!
Pat myZisfantastic I never said that people who dislike this modification is not a real petrolhead.. I, myself dislike some modifications on some cars, f.ex. bosozoku, but at the end of the day its their car, and they can do whatever they want to it, and a real petrolhead should respect that..
For those that have not really researched the film in painstaking detail, the original movie car that was used to make the Hearse was actually a Jaguar 2+2 and NOT the silver convertible (OTS) that Harold's mother gave him. The 2+2 being a little longer allowed the proportions needed to make it into a Hearse and the original OTS was not converted and was not destroyed!
The original was built on a Roadster. Not necessarily the same silver one shown in the film, but a SWB car nonetheless. Next time you watch the movie, note the size/shape of the doors compared to this replica. Way off.
My #1 All Time Favorite Movie. It's a shame he didn't flesh out the story of building his car and what's worse, he's supposed to have seen the movie yet did NOT know story or meaning of the movie. I've watched Harold and Maude about 500 times and have many copies on VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray. Mr. Roberts should've used his resources to contact Bud Cort to find out more about the car.
Harold & Maude was a great movie. A dark, romantic comedy that challenged social taboos. The Jag-hearse was an awesome prop and pivotal plot point.... and made for a hilarious scene as well (the Jag was a metaphor for his over-bearing mom)! Great job bringing it back to life!
This guy strikes me as the kind of person that always went against the grain and ruffled feathers. @@LostNCyberspace You're not exactly being all rosy yourself either. Instead of pushing the younger generations to the side with your snide comments, how about you actually try to help them out or teach them?
In the novelization of Harold & Maude, the writers go into details not mentioned in the movie, one of which is that Harold made the roof for his E-Jag hearse from the top of a particular model of Datsun station-wagon. I could have saved our man a lot of aggravation by just pointing him in this direction. Beautiful custom car, anyway ❤️!
It pained me deeply to see the e-type in "Harold and Maude" and it does again here, but if you're going to be transported to the cemetary, it might as well be an e-type.
The original had much better proportions because it started as a 2 seater short wheelbase coupe, while this replica was built on a 2+2 chassis, so the roof is higher and a bit further back. Still impressive, but not as well integrated as the original style-wise.

The video and the car are both outstanding. I bought the dvd a while back and am going to watch it tonight. It got me to wondering what had happened to the car. It’s really a loss that such an original and culturally significant machine was destroyed so to see another one be built is excellent. Would love to own the car one day but only if its free and i must pass it own to someone for free and have no regets if they trash it for over time as its possible to loose the true meaning of things. If I built this beautiful rather deadly car I might find myself with stage fright if I had to give an interview. I would prefer to Re-Hearse my comments and try to look calm while I spoke of building it. The gentleman here had fun building it and had moments also where he probably wanted to chuck it all! But looking at the finished car! What a tribute to a cult film! A Macabre Masterpiece of Engineering!!!
Love this. What passion and dedication. I MUST see this film now. I have always loved older women, so much so I tried many times to bleach my hair Andy Warhol/Santa claus white back in high school to no success. Again, marvelous build.
If this had been done to some low volume Ferrari or Maserati or suchlike then it would be a crime, however e types are quite common so no harm done and I think from the outside it’s fantastic, I love this sort of thing, one offs or shooting brake modifications.
Part of me appreciates the work he put into this, and how well it came out. But his attitude about not wanting to tell anyone what Japanese car the roof line is from sucks. The car restoration/customizing hobby is about sharing what you know so others can learn and improve on what you've done.
I definitely agree with you there. I don't think it would be that difficult to figure out which Japanese import he used for the conversion. Based on the slope of the rear window and the lines of the hatchback and the way it opens, my guess is it's a datsun 510 wagon. Obviously I can't confirm that, but if anyone is wondering, it does look extremely similar...

It still makes me irrationally angry that they destroyed the original Jag hearse in the movie. Driving it off of the cliff was so awful. I think it's cool that he made this one though. The passion that went into this is crazy.
Guy takes a beat up car and turns it into something great and one of a kind, "what a waste of a great car" write a hundred people with no real appreciation for anything. lol
And if you want to sing out, sing out! And if you want to be free, be free! That's what you should take as background music by presenting your outstanding Jag-Hearse. ;-)) Anyway, excellent work and brilliant video from a fan from the very beginning, I think. Have a lot of fun!
roofline is about an inch taller than the original because Ron used the later long wheelbase 2+2 FHC while the original movie XKE was a short wheelbase 2 seater FHC. The recreation has longer doors and larger window frames. Donor Jap car is a 1970 Datsun 510 wagon.

Glad to see someone tried to replicate it, although the back is a little bit too long and boxy the rest of it's great.
Nice work!
The grafted roof is a Datsun 510 wagon.....
Yup, the body lines on the rear are a perfect match.
Wow, you may have just saved me thousands of dollars.
SophiaPetrillosBuddy you building one?
It still makes me irrationally angry that they destroyed the original Jag hearse in the movie. Driving it off of the cliff was so awful. I think it's cool that he made this one though. The passion that went into this is crazy.
I absolutely love it!
Guy takes a beat up car and turns it into something great and one of a kind, "what a waste of a great car" write a hundred people with no real appreciation for anything. lol
Well, that was unexpected
What? What?!? WHAT THIS IS THE COOLEST BUILD EVER!!!
If you're going to drive a hearse, it may as well be a Jag.
who else thought it was a coffin coming out xD
Abdullah Mohamademin for animals... But it for sure does not sound like a kitten!
A Jaguar Shooting -- Brake...
Tin cookie box sellotaped to E-type does not a shooting brake make.
And if you want to sing out, sing out!
And if you want to be free, be free!
That's what you should take as background music by presenting your outstanding Jag-Hearse. ;-)) Anyway, excellent work and brilliant video from a fan from the very beginning, I think. Have a lot of fun!
Love the music
Endureromex Yes, that pipe is organ segment is magnificent.
Love it ❤
Gorgeous! and great memory!
I guess it 'stiffens' the chassis
I’m dying to have a ride in it.
roofline is about an inch taller than the original because Ron used the later long wheelbase 2+2 FHC while the original movie XKE was a short wheelbase 2 seater FHC. The recreation has longer doors and larger window frames. Donor Jap car is a 1970 Datsun 510 wagon.
Actually the hearse in the movie was a 2+2. The Jag his mother gave him was never chopped up to begin with.
He must really love that movie.
This car is a masterpiece
I have come close to death, too many times, to appreciate this :(
