My papaw on moms side worked for inland steels price tipple just down the road from wheelwright Ky where they lived and alotta the coal was mined…there’s still the big concrete building and some of the beltline runnin cross the road…I live under an old surface mine that I watched that same old yella iron run back n forth across the land awe struck and still love it today at 43…

Grew up in Tamaqua and Lewistown Valley during the 50's and early 60's. Neat tour. The hospital you pointed out near the end was where I was born. The Tamaqua Plaza was where I use to watch LNE hopper cars get loaded and my brother and I often rode our bikes down that road from 'Dutch Hill', is it still called that? The old LNE roundhouse in their Arlington Yard is where the bus exited, spent so many summer days there taking in all the activity. Anyway, I enjoy your videos, thanks for this one.

I was born in the same hospital and raised in LV and still live there. It's still Ditch hill. The roundhouse is still there(saw it on Google satellite maps.) Thanks for your comment.

My grandfather was a coal miner AT THAT mine (don't know if he used entrance #8 or not, but the same general mine for sure).
Mom says he worked up to 8 levels deep in that mine.
They lived in Coaldale, very close to the hospital - you can see a green church steeple on the left side of it, within a stone's throw of their old house.
From the bathroom upstairs you could look across the valley at the mine. I always wondered what it'd be like to go to that mine & explore.
So I finally got my wish - thank you!

Not sure the tour guide pointed out the actual coal seams but anthracite seams are steeply angled relative to horizontal.
Looks like the seams here go from upper left to lower right. Agree?

What's left of that one. Slope facing us is bottom rock where seam of coal roughly 50 ft thick 80° pitch down about 1000ft and curves up to surface on mountain behind us

It must be incredible to see when the old tunnels and workings get exposed to daylight, most of the time it must collapse before the workers get a look from their operator control seats.
