It was a common misconception about the vanilla version of FFXII that that was the only way to obtain the Zodiac Spear, and there was indeed a normal chest you could obtain one from, though it was hard to get there to farm it. The real obscure item from XII is from the International Zodiac Job System version, the invisible bow Seitengrat. The stats make the Zodiac Spear look like crap, and it spawns in a rare invisible chest in an obscure, albeit easy to get to, spot. The chest spawns at 1%, there is a 1% chance for it to be an item, and a 1% chance that item is the Seitengrat. It is so hard to obtain that people used to listen to the sound their PS2 made when you zoned into the area to know if the chest spawned, and then execute a precise input to open it based on NPC movements, or, later on, straight up locate their RNG seed via in game actiond and manipulate everything.
I remember the weirdness of unlocking Melee characters. My family was so convinced there was a final slot to polish out the roster to make the rows look proper. We were so convinced, we believed there was an impossible challenge that unlocked Raichu as a playable character. By using Pichu in All Star mode on the hardest difficulty without losing a single life, you could fight Raichi at the end to get him. Of course, there was no Raichu.
I remember hearing a Riachu rumour that claimed that he could be unlocked after beating the final Event match as Pikachu, only he straight-up replaces Pichu in the roster. Doesn’t sound worth it even if that was true.
I loved renting Xmen on the genesis back in the day. You just unlocked a memory of mine that I could never get past that level. Thanks for the tip 30 years too late!
I know these are usually only loosely ordered but I feel like X-Men should be closer to the top. Forcing you to break the fourth wall just to even beat the game is very weird, especially back then
Why; was it once a month? Because I remember it taking me an entire year to find Liu Kang in the first place; and then; actually train with him; and then; actually unlock him. I thought when I heard about him actually being an unlockable character; in Deception; it was like Luigi being in Super Mario 64(not the DS remake). I thought it was a joke. Turns out; in a way; it is a joke. The game devs put Liu Kang in Deception as a joke; because they wanted Liu Kang to be dead; permanently and have Shujinko take over as hero. Which was a bad idea; because Shujinko; is a krappy main character. And now; I would actually PREFER the Deadly Alliance/Deception methods over the methods we have now; where devs don't even put ANY effort; and just ask you for 1000$ instead. I know some games series have always had stupid ways of unlocking things; but the "pay extra real world/in-game money" for them method has always been my least favorite way of unlocking things. Not like how MK Deadly Alliance/Deception did it; with koins (yes; these games spelled it as "Koins"; because misplling is Kool! Yes; that was intentional). And playing Deception/Armageddon almost made me quit the entire MK franchise entirely. As much as I love MKD; it was konvoluted in the way of exploration; and explaining things. But I do like how they did the Konquest Mode. But making Shujinko the fake protagonist was pretty kleverly done by the game's actual villain; that stupid floating orb that was traveling along with you the entire time. Sorry. I actually love the MK franchise. I've been a fan since I was a kid. I know the recent games are a newer timeline; but you're going through the older timelines and just redoing the events of each game again; but now; it's a reboot. And it's getting harder and harder to kall myself a fan. Because I don't have internet konnection; so I kan't(is this annoying yet?) even play the games.
To be fair those treasure chests that you can't open to get Zodiac Spear in FF12 are very weirdly arranged next to each other, but still, knowing that you can't open them is absurd :) Moreover there is a chance to get it again if you did open those chests, by entering specific room in one of the dungeon, leave and enter again and there should be chest with that weapon, but the chance is very, very low - 1 : 10000. Moreover, there is a way to get it with one hundred percent certainty by casting Curaga specific amount of times before entering that room. And none of those things are revealed to player. How do I know this? Well, I opened those damned chests and I had to do it!
Hearing Ben pronounce Gaiden wrong for the Fire Emblem section seems so off to me considering that he pronounced the Gaiden in Ninja Gaiden correctly in the past.
I was about to post this. Bugs me when listicles do that. It brings into question the sincerity of the whole thing. Like I get if the presenter didn’t play it or look into it and it was the writer who did, but when it’s wrong three times in a way that would have had to be spelled that way on the page, that says to me it’s wrong from the writing stage.
Yeah this exactly. You have to wonder how many people looked at this script and no one once mentioned that this was wrong. I get that they haven’t played everything but I haven’t played it either but I knew it was planescape, and I’m not trying to run a gaming channel. It’s a bit disappointing.
Diddy Kong Racing is not on this list is a travesty You unlock Drumstick (a talented rooster who is superb at racing) by running over a frog with a red bird on its head with in the overworld! In the DS remake you slingshot the frog into the damn stratosphere! Also there is a Tails Chao in Sonic Adventure 2 you can only get by going off the beaten track in Phantasy Star Online 2, then connecting a GBA and transfering the chao. It's so much more convoluted that Mewtwo!
For what its worth Spiritomb only required you talk to the same person 32 times you just do have to leave and enter the underground over and over though. Still annoying but at least you don't need to have 32 different people to get them. It is offline only though which does suck and I would never have gotten them without serebii lol
I doubt a single one of us could have learned the hadoken without a little help from gaming magazine. Actually, got super drunk with some friends once that played MMX back in the day. We went through MegaMan X like normal and I started going for the hadoken. My friends never even heard of it, so when I showed them it blew their minds. Seeing a group of 25 year old men losing their shit over an unknown powerup in a 15 year old game was absolutely glorious
I personally feel like unlocking Luigi in melee was weirder than mewtwo. You’re bound to unlock mewtwo eventually without trying, but you had to complete the first level of the story mode using Mario while making sure that you completion time ended with the number 2 (:52,1:02,1:12,1:22, etc.)
I'm sorry, but is Ben just unaware that walkthroughs and guides existed before the internet? They were in magazine form that you had to pay for, but they existed.
And I bet a lot of people were shouting at the screen "It's PLANE Scape, not PLANET Scape!" But then this is someone who still pronounces Gaiden as "Gay-den"
"Letting your characters die in Fire Emblem is actually a good thing" I've played every game in the series and I agree. The games are designed around permadeath. People often hard reset their games to avoid character deaths, but the games are designed for you to have casualties. That's why they give you more units than you can ever use. Getting a unique narrative experience each playthrough because of how things shake out is part of the intended experience. So, while it's an unusual unlock requirement for the Gaiden chapters in Shadow Dragon, I don't find it to be against the games' philosophy. If anything, it rewards you for not cheaping out with resets.
Yeah I had difficulties with Shadow Dragon that I gave up playing. I got Caeda killed off early in the game not realizing her importance as she was essential in recruiting certain characters. Then I failed to get the two orbs in order to obtain Falchion, so I ended up in a gaiden chapter where you can get a weakened Falchion but I just couldn't beat the final boss.
Nah, my cousin and I unlocked Mewtwo the way God had intended when I got SSB Melee. I got it for Christmas after it came out and once I found out how to unlock Mewtwo, we made it our mission to stay up all New Year's eve/day and play for 20 hours straight in his living room. The whole time we played the game, one of our drunk uncles was asleep on the couch behind us while we just sat on the floor and played non-stop pokeballs-only free for all matches on the pokemon stadium stage until Mewtwo finally challenged us. Good times lol
It was difficult and dumb as hell to unlock the Hadoken in Mega Man X, but fortunately it didn’t take long for the code for all the weapons, energy tanks, etc. to become pretty well known. You could just skip right to having to do the Armored Armadillo stage over and over.
You only have to do the last checkpoint over and over, not the whole stage If you farm the old-school Megaman bat at the beginning of the stage for lives, then just grab the health powerup above the boss door and jump into the pit, it counts and you only have to repeat the last third of the stage or so
lmao planetscape Also, Nordom wasn't that hard to find. Torment reinforces that very few items are truly useless. After that, it's just a matter of persistence - Talk to everyone (like you should be doing anyway) and you'll get it identified, and the maze can be bruteforced fairly quickly. The character that I DID need a walkthrough for was Vhailor, and that's just 'cause he's dark and put in the dark behind you after you pass through a certain portal. also also time unlocks were quite standard in fighting games at melee's time, a 'feature' originally ported over from arcades.
There's nothing unusual about Mewtwo's unlock condition in Melee. You picked one of the most boring unlocks in a game where a major character is unlocked strictly by finishing the first level of the adventure mode when the timer is displaying a 2 at the end of its millisecond counter (which is is impossible to do on purpose), how is Mewtwo more obtuse than THAT?
To unlock Mewtwo I turned on an endless match and just left the console on overnight. I think someone told me this. 7:29 It's bullshit like this that makes me settle for the next best thing. 8:25 Oh god don't remind me. I forgot how hard it was to do this. It's bullshit that the game doesn't have Symphony of the Night unlocked to begin with. Unlocking Maria was much easier. I recommend playing the game with Maria since she is basically the easy mode character. I hade trouble beating the boss with Richter but Maria's double jump and more agile movement made it easier. 10:53 Is it possible to do this now? I might need to hack the game. I had to hack my 3DS for A Link Between Worlds for the Shadow Link Battles since you need Street Pass to complete them and it's very slow to 100% this if there is no one to connect with. Only one Dark Link will spawn if you play the game for 5 hours unpaused if you can't find anyone. You may need to resort to hacking if you value your time. I was able to fill out the Street Pass field this way and with weaklings (this helps for certain challenges). Heck even with this hack I had issues with the sand rod achievement since it only happens on a specific stages which didn't show up at first. You may want to go to the desert before setting up this hack.
For Mewtwo, every human player counted towards that 20 hour requirement If you had 4 controllers, you could do a 4 player stock match with no time limit and one life, then let the battle run for 5 hours At the end, the person that won gets to fight him
