Jhansi ka Qila (Fort ) :- Jhansi Fort or Jhansi ka Qila is a fortress situated on a large hilltop called Bangira, in Uttar Pradesh.
It served as a stronghold of the Karhade Brahmin Kings in Balwant Nagar (old name of Jhansi) from the 11th through the 17th century.
Located in the heart of Jhansi city, the Jhansi Fort was one of the most important centres of resistance to the British colonial rule during the Revolt of 1857.
It was built by Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo (1606-27) of Orchha on a rocky hill called Bangra in the town of Balwantnagar (presently known as Jhansi).
The fort has ten gates ( Darwaza).
Nestled between the Betwa and Pahunj rivers, the historic city of Jhansi is synonymous with its courageous queen, Rani Lakshmibai, who valiantly fought against the British forces during the First War of Indian Independence in 1857.
Early life. Rani Lakshmibai (or Rani Lakshmi Bai) was born on 19 November 1828 (some sources say 1835) in the town of Banares (now Varanasi) into a Marathi Karhade Brahmin family. She was named Manikarnika Tambe and was nicknamed Manu.
At the age of 14, she was married to the Maharaja of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao in 1842. After her marriage, she was called Laxmibai. Rani Lakshmi Bai's son Damodar Rao was born in 1851. But he died after four months.
Rani Laxmibai died while fighting in Gwalior on 18th June 1858, aged 23. She was dressed as a soldier when she died. Gwalior was captured by the British three days later. According to Hugh Rose, the Rani of Jhansi was “the most dangerous of all Indian leaders.”
