- William Walker was a journalist, lawyer and physician from Nashville, Tennessee, who in 1855 invaded Nicaragua with a few dozen troops and conquered the country. At the time, he was one of thousands of private U.S. citizens who had their sights set on taking over foreign nations, all in the name of Manifest Destiny. In this episode, host Michael Fox follows in the footsteps of William Walker as he recounts one of the most twisted stories of U.S. imperialism in Central America - a story that still has lasting repercussions for Latin America, the United States and across the world.

Greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷/ in my country we study details of those battles in early school! It needs more deeply details and context but surely in USA there is complete ignorance about it!! ( it sound as today description absolutely of current events : I am sorry)

I love how liberals do critical thinking. This guy who wanted to conquer literally all of Latin America in the name of the US empire and legalized slavery wherever he was able to colonize, was somehow a complicated figure and kind of a progressive because he wanted women to vote. I wonder if this applied also to indigenous women and his slaves, I wonder.
Also, his legacy is a mixed bag because although he didn't managed to colonize Nicaragua, they created a mythology around beating his ass so it's a win win situation. All of this definitely has nothing to do with white supremacy because you see, the US government wasn't involved after they absolved him of the crime of doing a bit colonialism.
