Holy tamales! And I thought Caravaggio wasn’t wrapped tight! People who believe just because a person has genius they are “better” than others or even above behaving ethically have always made my teeth hurt. It’s important to remember there was very little understanding of mental illness at that time. BTW both created some of my favorite works of art. What an extraordinary find!

On Tom's website, it looks like the book has already been sold. There are paperback translations published by Oxford and Penguin.

I still am ashamed. 40 years ago, I stole a copy of this book by accident. I left the bookstore without paying because we all were distracted, me and the cashier. But when I finally noticed that I hadn't paid, a few hours and a journey by train later, I must confess I didn't go back to pay.

LOL; I've got 5 old (worthless) editions, I used to walk into book shops and asks for copies of this book. It's a wonderful portrait of the mindset of the middle class during the renaissance. Yes, he's an old man talking about his youth. We don't have Lorenzo, Niccolo, or Cosimo's mindset, but bombastic seems to be the norm.

What's with the dedication to various British and Irish nobles??? Did they pay for the print run?

Best info I can find is that it's one English noble, Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington, who also happens to have a lot of other titles. He was a great patron of the arts so he possiblt he did pay for it.
