reading and watching hbo's 100 ft wave in episode 3, this was her 1st wave in a ridiculously dangerous location. according to the show, her & her team, didn't study the location, didn't know anything, really of the waves, didn't have a "spotter" on the cliff, didn't ask any questions to the locals that invited them to nazare..the driver was impatient, performing as if it was his 1st time.. basically being a fxcking moron. there are @least 8 subjects/rules they didn't adhere too and that's why this nightmare happened. she is completely fearless, but listening to the wrong people won't get you anywhere but an early grave. the good thing is she got a better team and has world records to prove it. besides all that, im just a guy who luvs big waves, hockey & respects her & her accomplishments.
laird is right, but not about maya. she survived the wave and the two after that. she didnt survive the ski rescue. they spose to slow down and stop dead next to the surfer so they got a chance to grab on but the ski come in too fast and went over the top of her and then she was dragged half the way back in underwater. the ski pickup wasnt good enough for nazare.
I respect Laird but I think this is envy. Carlos surfed the biggest wave. And Maya is the best women in the world surfing extreme waves. She is brasilian not american. Relax Laird other records in 2016 !
Maya almost died twice. Slater DM-ed her that she lacked the skill for that kind of surf. Laird actually surfs in big waves; he actually performs on big waves. There are days at Jaws that have reportedly been bigger than that day at Nazare. I have no doubt Laird has surfed waves bigger than anyone, and just isn't out there claiming it. Furthermore, Laird made his waves, Carlos didn't. Slater and Laird aren't speaking from envy, they are speaking from experience and knowledge.
