  • A rundown of several ways to achieve soft light for portrait photography. What IS soft light? Why do we like it so much? Here are some demos of good ways to get soft-looking light for portraits, using a Godox AD400 pro and standard (and improvised) solutions for modifiers.

Other favorite soft-light techniques for me include using a basic on-camera flash, pointed at the wall behind me, or to one side of the subject. This creates a large window light effect if conditions are right.

Thanks for the info Ed. Great video. Lighting possibilities are endless, from 2-3 light setups to a 1 light/reflector setup. You're right though, the choice is up to the individual style and being able to make do with whatever you have on hand. Heck, I even used a flashlight with waxed paper in front of it as a modifier. Results weren't the greatest, but they were passable. Keep the information coming please, it is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for the positive feedback. It really helps me to know what helps; what type of stuff I should be making and putting out there.

Good practical demonstration. I always appreciate the effort you put forth to show examples on how light interact with subjects. Thank you. I personally have a Glow 36 octabox. I love it, but I find I usually have to have either a reflector or a small light source filling in the other side when the shadows are too prominent. Wondering if moving the box closer and causing it to spill more would help. I try not to have the box too close because its awkward for my subjects (business head shots non models) to have the box on top of them. I am guessing that is why people want the larger boxes. Anyway, great examples thanks.

Yes, and I should have mentioned in the video that another reason the Glow was probably giving me a slight bit more contrast was because I had it about 34" away rather than say 24" or so. But certainly, a fill light or reflector on the other side of the face will help (but it has to be kinda close in, too).

Hi Ed. First I am holed up in the house. My body is a risk factor for the virus. I have a translucent panel that I have never thought about as a soft shoot through modifier. Your shower curtain immediately gave me the idea to try my panel. As always thanks for preparing the video and helping us average people open our creative minds. Keep making videos..

Thank you so much for that, Steve. And, yes, experimenting is the way to go, and this is a good time to do it.

I love brollies - mostly because of convenience.
But my main studio is dark walled and outside is large and the light doesn't rebound too much.

They really are the easiest, lightest, and least expensive of the proper modifiers. My go-to if I'm moving fast and travelling light, especially for indoor work.
