Can't wait for the other videos we brainstormed at that brunch, "video about french toast" and "video about mimosas"
I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall for this conversation. Potential video idea? Would be super cool to watch you guys chat about anything
Ok, but "video about breakfast in movies" would be amazing!
Mimosas, please. That's permission to drink at the premiere.
If that french toast somehow gets made with Milk Bread, I'm in.
Video about sweaters, in video games
This video needs more trains
My favorite thing about videos about trains is the trains in the video.
If you love trains so much, why not train all the train, every train?
He should do a video on trains???
What's the ultimate train cosy movie ?
Whenever a Patrick Willems video isn't about trains, everyone should be asking, "Where are the trains?"
Now we will know whether people hate sweaters more than trains
If sweaters beat trains we'll know humanity has truly failed.
i came here exactly to express this inquiry lol cuddos
I love both.
The Midnight Sweater Train was a true horror.
Someone point me back to the train video.
I love PHW, but I just can’t with this.
This video is a warm wool sweater for my brain.
Good luck on your case against the DOJ!
So the sweater video is actually a toque video.
16:52 speaking of sweaters in stop-motion, all of coraline's sweaters were hand-knit on teeny tiny needles
Convinced that Patrick made this to show off his sweaters.
Edit: AND also get a sweater sponsorship
Patrick could have funded another film or entire season if he stopped buying sweaters
I didn't realize he was changing sweaters throughout the video until the last one 😅
And be able to write off his recent sweater purchases for tax reasons.
The quarter-zip is the sweater of the tech CEO giving himself a bonus as he does massive layoffs. it’s the “i may have 3 yachts but im a relatable dude” sweater
You’re telling me Patrick (H) Willems the man who made the great train videos and this amazing sweater video is teasing me with a Batman Beyond video that he should definitely make if only for me
I can't wait for that video to unite the United States and grant some peace. That's the right timeline.
@ not only will it unite the country but it will be the thing to thrust us into flying cars or widely available batmobiles
🦇
if you're batman, then any mobile will mobile a bat
And me!
This video essay needed a train wearing a sweater in the thumbnail.
Agree.
I agree. The sweaters in Knives Out make that movie a lot more cozy and autumn-like.
Did he have to blend politics with jumpers?
I'm Canadian, but I can't believe even intelligent Democrats were convinced to vote for Harris... She just sounded like a completely NIT-WIT in EVERY INTERVIEW, regardless of how well scripted they were!
I can't believe anyone educated would be happy with Kamala as the Representative of the American People. Most of her speeches didn't make sense, but they still insisted on having her repeat the nonsense repeatedly, just using different words.
Unless they were intentionally TARGETTING the morons who didn't understand anything she said, but felt she was sincere because she spoke SLOWLY and for a LONG TIME.
And how many democrats can even AFFORD LORO PIANA?
The only thing better than being able to write-off your sweater collection as a business expense are free sweaters from a sponsor
The problem is, if you wear the clothes outside of business reasons, like to parties or just around the house, you have negated your tax-deductability. The rules for deducting clothing are really strict, they generally have to be clothes you wouldn't wear outside of work. My ex-wife is a public defender. To deduct their suits, they have to buy stuff that's ugly enough they wouldn't want to wear it outside of a courtroom.
I'm thinking you should give that Batman Beyond idea a chance!
Rowan j Coleman just did a whole series retrospective last week. It's very good. Check it out.
All we are saying is give schway a chance
Join the club!
I'm ashamed to admit it took me almost 7 minutes to realise Patrick's sweater was changing throughout the video. 😅
This alone is worth a rewatch for me.
+
It was every couple minutes at first!
It took me probably 20 minutes 😅😅😅 darn i really don't care about sweaters do i
The dieworkwear guy is gonna love this
I can't wait for Derek and Patrick to nerd out about sweaters for two hours.
Billy Crystal tucking that sweater into his jeans is absolutely unforgivable.
You spelled iconic wrong
@ Yes of course. In the same way that wearing socks over your shoes or putting your underpants on back to front could be described as “iconic” :)
I would hereby like to nominate John Candy as the sweater king of cozy movies! He wears an awesome sweater in (almost) every movie he's in (a majority of which qualify as cozy according to Patrick's system).
‘Cottage gore’ in The Hateful Eight is the Patrick H Willems take we deserve AND the one we need right now.
I was only half-watching when Patrick listed off the killers in sweaters, so when he said, "and of course, this guy" and flashed Freddy on the screen, I only looked up after the cut to Colin Firth.
Lesson learned: ears alone are not sufficient to take in a Patrick Willems essay.
If you want to destroy my sweater, pull this thread as I walk away
Watch me unravel; I'll soon be naked
Nothing I like more than a youtuber who states their love of a piece of fashion, and backs it up with multiple costume changes throughout the video to show off their collection.
Very sharp collection. - Signed, a guy who almost exclusively wears tank tops.
The Holdovers is probably my favorite Cozy Film of recent years. Also includes some of the best sweaters.
extremely timely video as I just picked up knitting and I also have way more sweaters than any kind of other grament in my wardrobe :"D yay for the "While you were sleeping" clip, also just watched it recently for my annual holiday rewatch, one of my fave cozy movies, it scores 25 on the cozy meter :")
Is John Carpenter’s The Thing cozy? Keith David rocks a banger sweater.
That movie sadly gave me a massive headache when I watched it in theaters. That negates any Keith David-related coziness imo. It's really a shame because I typically like Keith David-related media.
I would classify it as cozy insofar as it makes me as the viewer want to get cozy. Couldn’t imagine watching that movie with a cold beverage and a t-shirt!
The movie itself is the harsh condition required to truly enable coziness… But there is no „empathetic coziness“ for me because I could not imagine any of the characters feeling cozy, maybe apart from the beginning of the movie which is not the way an inherently cozy movie usually goes in my opinion.
important note: *every* sweater is handmade. a machine cannot knit a sweater, at best it can produce a knit fabric that is then stitched together by, again, human hands. machines cannot crochet and they cannot sew beyond what a sewing machine does. every single item of clothing you have ever worn, from your nice sweater to your underpants, was made by hand, and in very many cases under grueling conditions. that's why it's so important to not treat clothes like throwaway items (environmental impact notwithstanding), and it's important to correctly express this in language.
so i think more accurate terminology for the sweaters in banshees for example would be "homemade" and "slow fashion". love the video, but as someone who knits and sews, this topic is very close to me heart.
Yes! Even so-called machine-knit sweaters are assembled by hand (I'm also a knitter and more generally a maker). Be interesting if someone could teach a robot to crochet 😂
As someone who grew up in the west of Ireland in the 70/80s ganseys were a serious business. You would hope your Nana would knit you one for Christmas. Badly needed.
My favorite movie sweater was knitted for me by my wife. It has a movie connection because while she made it I was away working my first feature film gig as a sound recordist for two weeks. I also used it as a costume for a short film I directed where a sinister merman uses it to disguise himself as a sailor.
It is nice and warm. I picked the colours (maroon, orange, and blue) but she designed the pattern herself. It rules.
The best movie sweater.
Not the video we deserved, but the video we needed.
Yes.
Worth it for Heath Ledgers performance alone.
Literally have a letterboxd list of movie sweaters/sweater movies. This is so intrinsically my shit and the fact that it came out on New Year’s Eve just rocks. Thanks Patrick.
What are some of your favorites?
@ many were mentioned in this video - knives out, Harry Potter, when Harry Met Sally, home alone, the Bourne identity, dead poets society, Little Women, big Lebowski, fantastic Mr. Fox, the social network. In fact I think the only one he missed was The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
This really isn’t even a video about sweaters in film and instead is just Patrick talking about sweaters and every now and then saying ‘here is one in a movie I like’. And I love that. Thank you Patrick
Was compelled to buy a new fisherman’s sweater while watching this. Thank you, Patrick.
I'm considering trying knitting. I might just be unhinged.
@@michaelleoanrd194 you just might have an automatic conversation starter whenever someone complements your self-knitted sweater
This might be my favourite Patrick video ever! And that's saying some. I will also never watch a movie again without noticing the sweaters!
Patteicks videos are so good im comfortable with him referring to his vids as "episodes" of a "series" and that speaks volumes
Sweaters in Patrick Willems Videos - Why They’re Great and Why They Matter
The Hateful 8 is my cozy movie too. It checks a lot of boxes if you add hot coffee.
I know right 😊
but the coffee is poisoned ☠☠☠
I felt seen when he mentioned Fincher movies being cozy to some.
One winter I watched both The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo almost every night to fall asleep to. Pure ASMR. Even the menu screens on those movies are oddly cozy. I have weirdly fond memories waking up at 3am to the liminal vibe of Reznor's score and various Scandanavian carousel photos clicking by.
yesssssss Patrick! I love this. I've been knitting as a hobby for about a year and a half, in fact I'm working on a sweater right now as I'm watching this! I started knitting because I was in a really bad place with my mental health and needed something soothing and relaxing to fill my time with while I recovered. I also started watching a lot of movies while working on my knits, and that's how I found your channel too! Now every time I see a knitwear piece in a film, I get excited to figure out the shape, construction, type of wool etc. lol. Anyway, great video as always and hope you and the team (hi Emma!) have a good 2025.
As a Brit I'm watching this and thinking they're wearing jumpers. This is jumpers in films. Although anything with a zip is not a jumper. Them's the rules. Excellent video. Especially the way you talk about what 'cosy cinema' is.
When knitwear that would otherwise be a jumper has a zipper, what does it become?
Incredible video, thanks patrick
OMG, my first answer for cozy was The Hateful Eight, too! 😅 I think of it as a Christmas movie, despite the gore, cuz it’s so cozy by the fire with the blizzard outside. 😊
Okay but I’m now convinced that Batman Beyond video is what this nation needs right now.
19:58 - "it is the clothing equivalent of a hug"
THAT's why I love sweaters so much!!
I didn' think of them this way but it explains everything 😊
Reminded me I need to watch the Wild Robot again, no sweaters but there are cozy vibes and the way the whole thing is painted gives it immaculate texture better than paper thin modern sweaters
I have a theory that sweaters are directly responsible for the downfall of democracy in my country lol. I'm Pakistani, we love cricket, part of the uniform in test cricket (at least a few decades ago) is a pristine white sweater for when the weather gets super cold during long matches. In my childhood it was so comforting to see all the coolest stars in the country wearing these amazing knit sweaters with their all white kits and the whole community would sit and watch. Please try googling test cricket sweaters it's amazing and a bit of a lost comfort now that cricket has shifted to bright loud and colourful leagues with matches that are 10 times faster and less relaxing. I personally believe that seeing our captain wearing these sweaters in the 90s made him so beloved and comforting in our eyes that when he ran for prime minister he changed everything and um let's leave it at that
My personal favorite sweater worn in a film is the red cardigan Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) wears in “The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone (The Godfather Part III).”
“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”
hey patrick, thanks for being the coziest movie guy on youtube,
what i think is: coziness also has a lot to do with the look of a film, the lighting and actual texture of a film. for example overtly digital and over-lit films (such as the Kevin Hart clip you showed- what the hell was that??) will never be cozy to me. I think the analog texture and the warm lighting of older films will always add to the coziness of a picture. The Holdovers did a terrific job at recreating the look and feel of those older films (even though it was filmed digitally) and I’m pretty sure that if it was filmed liked one of those hyper-digital overlit The Rock movies, none of that coziness would’ve translated. So basically- whats going on with all these ugly movies?? We’re losing so much coziness!
Anyway, keep rocking those sweaters and thanks for everything!
Me wife and I would call it Hygge cinema. And our peak Hygge movie might be While You Were Sleeping. Haven't tallied the score, but I suspect it's pretty high. And Sandra Bullock pulls a Christmas gift for her land lord out of her over-sized sweater sleeve. Also, I think the presence of soft pets should be part of the scoring system
Basically all Scandinavian murder mystery movies are chock-a-block with sweaters. I don't think I'd call them cozy though.
not really a movie but George Harrisons pink and orange sweaters from Get Back are amazing
Famed Sweater enjoyer Patrick H Willems takes on sweaters in movies. INCREDIBLE
For people who live in Mediterranean (dry summer, wet winter) climates, Merino wool v-necks are actually incredibly useful.
I just enjoy Patrick wearing different sweaters between cuts.
The cabling and knot work on the Aran sweaters of Ireland were used to identify specific families when a fisherman was lost a sea. Each family had its own unique style that could identify them.
Unfortunately, I saw this with no prior knowledge and thought "this sounds like something that could be a myth." So I looked it up and it turns out it's a myth.
@@SamAronow This factoid's mythical status is itself so well known that it seems like every mention of it is now followed by a comment that it is a myth.
I don't personally like sweaters because of all the itchy materials (thanks, autism) and I get warm really easily, but I loved this video! Honestly what I love most about your channel is how you genuinely just make videos about things you like, and make them exactly the way you want to make them. Happy new year, Patrick!
Besides sweater itchiness, I find jackets are just much easier to put on and take off. They also allow more temperature regulation: I can unzip the jacket while keeping it on if I'm getting warm but it's still cold enough to need a sweater.
You could find a nice soft (cotton) one. Woolen sweaters are best with a long sleeve underneath!
You don't have to be "on the spectrum" to find itchiness to be annoying.
You DO have to be "on the spectrum" to make being "on the spectrum" your whole identity.
@@colinrussell2017 You're more likely to find certain materials intolerably uncomfortable (itchy or otherwise) if you're on the spectrum.
@@colinrussell2017 Better than making being a jerk on the internet your entire personality.
Honestly, I appreciate you putting into words why I love wearing turtlenecks. I’m self-conscious about my torso, but I actually like my face, so I’d rather that be peoples’ focus when they see me (with a cardigan covering my weird body, of course)
Happy new year, Patrick + team!! I discovered your channel this year by searching “mission impossible video essay” and you quickly became one of my favorite RUclipsrs because of the high-quality production, humor, and how you seemed to verbalize every opinion I harbor about Mission Impossible. Thanks for being such an educational and entertaining part of my year!! Cheers to you all for 2025 ♡♡
Please, Patrick, please please please, I’m begging you whilst eating lunch to please please make a Batman Beyond video that is so incredible in its scope and depth that the shareholders of WBD fire David Zaslav for not listening to his Christmas Carol ghosts.
As a first-time viewer I didn't expect such an amazing intro theme and animation, wow
Coming over from Nebula to say Patrick alone is more than worth the subscription. Funny thing October is also the best month in San Francisco because it's when we have summer.
I really thought “this is a really dark time” was gonna turn into a Doechii reference
19:30 That is a cardigan.
I find it perfect that you opened the video by saying (from your perspective) that it's politically cold outside and you wanted to creating something comforting and distracting-and a main point in the video is that "cozy" is all about creating warmth against the cold.
I think that's the underlying aspect of "comfort media" it doesn't make you blind to the world but it reminds you of the goodness the world when it's not being a nice place
Now we need a video about people wearing sweaters on trains in movies.
Clearly Knives Out 3 needs to be on a train. I don't know how they'll manage it without being brushed off as a clone of Murder on the Orient Express, but I'm pretty sure Rian Johnson is creative enough to be up for the task.
@@HumbleWooper, I would love to see that.
This was the perfect video to end 2024 on. I love niches and this was just a thrill to watch.
Happy New Year Patrick and everyone. Let's get him that sponsorship, if we can do it with Mission Impossible we can do it with this!
I just want to call out your intro theme. Its such a bop and I never skip it!
💯
Watching this in a particularly cold new year. Your sweaters and those in the scenes really make me feel a little warmer! Happy New Year people!
Best New Year's Gift
The 'Handsome Chris' sweater from Knives Out is essentially seen as a milestone achievement in the knitting community. One that I have not yet completed
*Sees the title of this video and thinks* “No way I’m watching a 33 minute video about sweaters in movies”
*hits the end of the essay* “Wait? That’s it?”
Well done, Patrick. 😅
Have a wonderful new year, everyone!
At first when i started to watch his videos i liked the themes and the style, but found the intro too long and almost left the whole channel because of the little side scenes. And then it really grew on me😊
now i respect the uniqueness and the braveness, not everybody has the guts to do this on a youtube channel 👍
@9:00 "Most of the time jeans just look like jeans" shots fired. Though in terms of perfect distractions I'd much rather watch a sweater vs jean debate than any current news.
If the debate was between sweater+jeans and sweater+kilt, the latter would be my personal winner.
I was so jazzed for the Willems siblings Christmas Q&A popping up yesterday (loved the length btw) and was looking forward to the sweater video, but to find it come out the very next day!? 🤯
Good choice because Rowan J Coleman released a retrospective on Batman Beyond 8 days ago
Now I need one of my KnitTube channels to make a long-form movie analysis video essay and the loop will be complete. I appreciate that the cozy scoring system dovetails nicely with Mikey and Dan's Christmas rating system from a few years back, and I bet there would be some movies that score high in both systems.
I can't stand wearing turtlenecks. Nothing against the look. I just don't like the feel of something around my neck. I'm more of a band hoodie guy.
The sweater changing after every cut away is 👌
YOOOOOOOOOOO I FUCKING LOVE SWEATEEEERRRRRSSSS!!!!!!!!!
I totally understand what he means with the homemade sweaters. I live in Norway and when I started to learn how to make my own sweaters, It changed the way I look at them now. I just have no desire for store bought anymore. The love, time, effort and details make such a huge difference.
Watched on Nebula.
I am a life-long aficionado of the classic Sweater Girl look. But, a look I find possibly even more attractive is a really big over-sized sweater, ideally a turtleneck, worn with a simple pair of jeans or leggings. A look that says both "cozy" and "adorable" in great big capital letters.
When I was a teen in the '80s, one of my favorite outfits was a pair of black dress slacks, black and dark-red button-down shirt, with a big baggy red-and-black speckle pattern cotton raglan sweater. That's the '80s style I wish had seen a revival, I love that "stylish but casual" loose-fitting sweater look (it works well with sweatshirts too, but looks better with sweaters).
Thank you for this! A lovely, cozy video to close out the year. Especially loved the costume changes. Bonus points for the Hudson's Bay wool sweater at the end!
Can't wait for the sequel "Sweaters are Overrated - Flannels in Film"
"The cinematic experience of tweed and other shorthand for academia."
Good thing I'm already wearing a sweater
(The first two Harry Potter films are PRIME cozy films, especially with the ending of Chamber of Secrets)
First cozy sweater film that comes to mind: While You Were Sleeping & Sandra Bullock's long sleeves & Bill Pullman's everyman sweater look. Love film costuming discussions - next time, sweatshirts & hoodies & sports films?
I recently read somewhere that Pullman still has the reversible jacket lol
You can't fool us. This whole episode was an excuse to show off your sweaters! And we're here for it!
It still wouldn’t hurt to at least try to make that Batman Beyond video, Pat
Only you could make this video, Patrick. Love you!
Patrick and Team just to let you know, I don't agree with you politically but as somebody creative to another, your content is very well put together, and honestly your maybe one of the best Cinema Analysis channels on RUclips today. Happy New Year! and keep going.
You didn't have to mention your politics, just as I didn't have to mention your misspellings and poor grammar. We both did, though.
as a fellow sweater enthusiast and knitter, i loved this video so much
Allow me to raise an eyebrow at the notion that the video with the most explicit "this is my side of the political aisle" is also the coziest of the year.
Less Politics!!!!!! We are here for the Movies!!!!!!
Why would you assume that the majority of your audience for a film analysis channel would be liberal democrat?? Makes no sense. Many of us see a bright future ahead and are having a great holiday!
Living the vast majority of my life along the Gulf Coast has given me far too few opportunities to indulge in the loving hugs of sweaters. It was New Years Eve yesterday, the high temperature was 76 degrees is all I'm saying.
Hoo boy, and you thought your train video wasn't going to get many views...
I went to art school in Seattle and knew a young woman who got the opportunity to hand make a sweater or two for The Hateful Eight. When the movie premiered and she got to talk about it, she revealed that she made herself an extra sweater with the extra material. If you could pick a sweater to own from any film, what sweater would it be?
I respect your monologue at the beginning. Thank you for keeping it pretty surface level. I do not subscribe to the side of the aisle that you seem to be speaking to, but man do I enjoy your video essays. Also, I completely agree with you about dressing for summer. I do need to defend the quarter-zip. It's a perfect sweater for a good business casual look. They're also slimming and frame the face nicely. There's a reason people wear them. Maybe a video about blazers and sport coats? Keep up the good work.
You mean the side of human rights?
Yeah man I’m not a big fan of basic human decency either
My personal ranking of the sweaters you wear in this video (on a scale of "great sweater" to "outstanding sweater"):
1) #10 - excellent texture AND pattern. Very bright and fun, with big eye-catching stripes, but also looks exceptionally comfy.
2) #3 - really love the warm colors on this one, and enjoy the look of the contrasting sleeve color a lot. Also looks like nice thick yarn.
3) #7 - simple, a lovely autumnal color, would look good over lots of different colored collared shirts.
4) #1 - beautiful green for a nice, classic cable knit sweater look. Spent a while trying to figure out if it was exactly the same sweater as #8 but in a different color, and I have come to the conclusion that it is not, but they are very similar.
5) #6 - very fun pattern, love the pop of orange.
6) #8 - an excellent white cable knit sweater. Very cozy. When it comes to sweaters I prefer fun colors, though, so this definitely can't compete with #1.
7) #2 - this is one I feel I'd be very likely to wear myself, and it would perhaps rank higher were it not for the fact that I like the similarly simple and yellow(ish) #7 so much more. Also it's perhaps the sweater features that looks potentially the thinnest (though it also looks very soft).
8) #9 - a nice black (or very dark navy?) turtle neck, which is always a good wardrobe staple. Looks great on you, but is far from the most interesting sweater featured.
9) #4 - a perfectly nice sweater with a nice texture to the yarn (I like that it isn't a pristine solid color, but has some variation to it), but ultimately I'd never go for a solid white (or white-adjacent) sweater myself unless it had an interesting cable knit pattern.
10) #5 - it was hard to decide to put this one last, because a black turtleneck is an eternally flattering thing, and this one has such a nice weight to it, but personally I sometimes find sweaters that have JUST loose enough a knit that you can see the shirt below (but only a teensy bit) to be a bit annoying. Like now I have to really think about what I'm wearing under it and if I want to draw attention to those wee holes or not.
I don't think I meant to review each individual sweater.... I seem to be procrastinating going to sleep.
“Republican dad vibes” is such a perfect description. A man who absolutely never listens and spends 20 minutes a year arguing about what clothes he’s going to buy with a woman who cries herself to sleep every night
Watched this while knitting a big, patterned sweater. Happy new year!
Why the F do U.S. Amerikans think that the elections mean anything 😂 😅
A century of relative comfort and gaslighting.
I see you saved your best video for last (of the year). This is a GREAT essay, my dude.
This is what Trump Derangement Syndrome looks like.
Get this man his sweater sponsorship.
Nice video. Too bad you had to ruin it with your paranoid political rants.
