I have lots if respect for Rabbi Green. But this talk omits the actual meaning of kidush/kiddushin/kaddish: the root kdsh refers to that which is set apart. Kidush marks the separation in time of the Sabbath day; kiddushin indicates a relationship that is held separate from all others, reserving ourselves for each other; kiddush mourns the separation of the physical presence of our loved one from this world, the separation of death. The explanation he gave is all very well, but it’s a lot if symbolism and metaphor lacking the basic meaning upon which all the other meanings rely: that which is reserved, set apart as special.
