It's always a good idea to check valve clearance when head is off the bike, easier and saves time, also when installing cam chain tensioner pull cam chain tight leaving slack at tensioner area then deploy spring bolt
G,day Andy just started watching your shows mate really informative I have started to restore a FJ1200 and this info is great stuff keep up the good work
So Andy, about my 1979 XS1100 I got Athena Gasket kit I got a rubber gasket with tabs that goes on the Cam Chain Area. I am trying to figure how to install that between Valve heads and Cylinders. The question is Won’t that create a gap between Valve heads and Cylinders? Do really need to install? Can’t find information anywhere and manual is not clear.
I'm rebuilding a 79 Yamaha xs1100 I am using this old Pistons like you did what size rings would I need after honing The Jug? With standard rings work also would I have to grind them for The Gap
Cylinder head is 25 ft-lb (35 Nm) and 14.5 ft-lb (20 Nm) for the smaller ones at the front and rear. Cam bearing caps are done in two stages to a final torque of 7.2 ft-lb (10 Nm) I don’t have a spec for the cam cover, I’ve always just done them up by hand.
Hey Andy, Great Job. Your video's have really helped me out in lots of areas. Just wondering, did you use the same head bolts putting the head back on. I did a small engine recently and had to replace them, since they stretched out a bit.
Hi Mark, thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Yes I did use the same studs. I have had to use new ones from time to time over the years but mostly not. Andy
Hi Andy! Really love your videos! I am replacing the rings on my xs1100. And I want to use the worm drive clamps like you but I was wondering did the clamps you used have a little gap on the tightening mechanism? I can't quite tell in the video. Just wondering because I'm worried the rings will get caught in that gap when putting the cylinders on and that it will damage the rings.
Alrighty thank you!!!!!! Now one more question😊 I finally got the engine together. But there is steam like smoke coming out of the crankcase breather. I understand it can be condensation but if this keeps happening should I worry. It was doing this before I replaced the rings.
Karl Pee g’day mate. Yamaha marked the ‘C’ as the set position for the chain tensioner and it will be the point in the rotation where there is the least amount of stress on the chain from the cam shafts.
hello, started watching on the recommendation from Ollie. A good idea using those hose clamps as ring compressors. One question - the base gasket - did you use any jointing compound etc or was the gasket dry? I noticed from an earlier episode that you had trouble in getting old glue off. What do you think of jointing compound. David
Hi David, I am not a fan of gasket goo, particularly in such a hard to reach location. If you are not planning on being the one who is going to remove it again I would say go for it, it adds another level of security. The trick is to make sure that the mating surfaces are clean and fee of the old gasket.

just noticed your postscript to episode 49 re gasket goo. Answered my original question!!!

12:31 is where you do a quick leak down test.
I have a 1980 XS100 Midnight Special and have owned it since 1987 . I am considering selling it sadly due to a neck problem .
Nice work Andy now i think a few minutes walk away from the bike and a few cool pints are required 😉
Sadly after 20 years working in breweries I no longer get free beer, and I hate paying for it 😂
Buenos días, me podrías decir la puesta a punto como seria del yamaha xs 1100 eleven. Gracias
Torque specifications for cylinder head, camshaft and engine cover?
please 🙏

@@ANDY5 After the torque wrench clicked once,on the head bolts at 25Lb.,, why do you go for the second click ,,i was taught this can overtorque?
@@ANDY5 thank you very much my friend

Great videos Andy. I'm restoring an xj900s diversion, so very similar engine. Hey I was just wondering where you bought your gaskets for this project?
G’day Tom, some gaskets I have bought from Yamaha and some from eBay
@@ANDY5 thanks for the reply. I'll check them out

They’ll be fine mate. Just be sure that the ring gaps are not located where the worm drive is and you’ll be okay

Hi Andy
I would like to know where did you get those piston rings?
Thanks alot.
+Francis Boutin (Hyperion666) G'day mate, I just searched on eBay, they are usually easy enough to find. Don't go for the cheapest set. Andy
Hi Andy - another great video - one question, why did you move the crank to “C” before installing the tensioner ?

I'm so bummed out that you accidentally hit the frame with the wire wheel. That bloody sux man!
Yeah it does. It is in a place where you can't really see it. My painter will sort it out. It just pisses me off.
wanna restore my 79xs1100. I also have an 82xs1100
G'day Eric, yeah why not, I'm expensive however :)
