It’s a good message to point out what Jesus did for us, and the humbleness of his birth. But the Bible never specifically states that they were poor. They were seeking a place in an inn, they weren’t seeking to camp out, like the more poor people probably would have done. They were simply turned away, and forced to make do. They may very well have had moderate means. I do think Mary and Joseph, like all parents, of course were not incompetent, and would have anticipated needing something to put on their newborn, and they would’ve been traveling with the basic necessities. They wouldn’t be an afterthought. I’m sure Mary, like all mothers, would start to gather the necessities as soon as she knew she was pregnant... especially since she knew she was pregnant with the Son of God. She would feel a great sense of responsibility for taking very good care of him, as would Joseph. Any sane mother and father would be prepared. They would’ve had swaddling cloths and fabrics to use as diapers, ointments, and the basics. And I think just because they had to flee to Egypt doesn’t mean they did it illegally, or that they didn’t live in some part of Egypt where several languages were spoken, just like Jerusalem where several languages were common because it was on a trade route. God would have made a way for them, and people forget that one of the gifts given to Jesus at his birth was gold. I don’t think they just gave him a few coins, and artists like to show a pretty little box, but the full amount was not mentioned, and it could’ve easily been in sacks, and they might have brought him some nice fabrics and other gifts as well. It might’ve been that just a few of the gifts were mentioned, that seems more likely anyway. Wise men bearing gifts don’t usually limit them to just one item, they tend to lavish gifts, especially for a king. When other such special visits are made to someone great in the Bible, the gifts are abundant. They also did not show up the night of his birth, because it said they went to the house where he was. They had relocated from the manger scene by then. Artists like to put it all together, makes it easy to condense the story into one scene. I think the gift of gold was to fund his life and ministry. His parents would be humble and not misappropriate those funds, and they would’ve taught him a trade just like their other children. I don’t think they would have broadcast the receipt of these gifts to others, but they would have guarded it all and used the gifts accordingly. And we know Jesus wasn’t really born in winter, the Catholics took their Roman pagan holiday for their sun god, their winter solstice/Yule holiday, and wrapped Jesus around it so they could get Christians to celebrate a pagan holiday. They did the same with Easter and all their other pagan holidays wrapped in a Christian label. They brought the pagan Yule tree indoors, too, the Bible specifically mentioned this as a pagan act, and a lot of people take it further and put an angel on top of it, even though the Bible says to make no images of anything in the heavens or beneath the earth, or in the waters beneath the earth, and that would indeed include angels. It’s been turned into a holiday of materialism and excess, more fitting to a pagan holiday than a Christian one. We can celebrate Jesus every single day, without making the central banks the greatest recipients of our human efforts. Spending money we don’t have, giving gifts to each other has nothing to do with Jesus, It’s just so ingrained as a cultural festival, many people feel obligated to indulge in the weird blend of pagan traditions with a Jesus label on it.
