Ha! Isn't that the guitar that Gibson bullied a small brand over a few years back, Satellite Amps, who bought the trademark for the Coronet when Gibson stopped producing them for years and let theirs expire. He became the legal owner and producer of those guitars until Gibson found out and bullied him into submission with a cease and desist, and under threat of lawsuit he had no means of fighting, coerced him into selling them back the trademarks, and now here we are! I find it hard to believe RUclips's #1 Gibson fanatic either doesn't know about this massive incident or forgot to mention that to the audience in this video breakdown... How has no one else mentioned this yet?!
Sorry, but I'm not paying $1700 for that. I'd buy a jr. first.
Isn’t great to have freedom of choice?!
Way back when - I had the 1960’s Epiphone Coronet and sold it for $275 not knowing that it was worth $1600 - Batwing - WOW - It played well and had a NY pick-up
@@MoeVanprick You're presuming I don't, or wouldn't own an Epiphone. Calm down, I do own an Epiphone ES335. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.
Amen.
thank you
It has the proper Kalamazoo epiphone headstock awesome
Should have been the asymmetrical one with the batwing headstock!
Yep! Like MC5 and Radio Birdman 🤌🤌🤌
That would be sick
If mty eyes didn't deceive me, that version also had a belly cut and very rounded beveled edges.
theyy break easy and symetrical looks better on a Gibson. for wackiness tho yeah for sure tho!
@@tei1337 yes, I had a late 2000s Wilshire, belly cut and very rounded over body edge. It had the vibrato, which was not very good at steering in tune.
1700 for a stripped down instrument with no binding? bleh
Ordered today!! Been wanting one for years and years. Coolest epiphone! Some people just don't get it! This is pure 50s epiphone history! And it's made in Nashville TN!
Not made in China!!!! Okay I won't talk shit.....
Congrats!
Hopefully they've got better build quality than gimpson..
Oofta, the wrap tailpiece isn’t even compensated. A non carved hunk of wood with 1 pickup for almost 2 grand is ridiculous
That headstock logo is the same on my 1939 Epiphone Electar lap steel.
At least a new release costing $1700 should not look ugly and cheap.
That thing is hideous. It looks like a $130 guitar.
but it looks like a cheap guitar from a long time ago!
@@davidgreenwood6029amazing how Gibson and all of them make a gigantic profit making some of the simplest guitars ever made
You’re right, it looks incredibly cheap. And I don’t mean inexpensive, I mean craptastically cheap. I wouldn’t own one unless I was allowed to sell it off. And the QC has been so bad in recent years for Gibson/Epiphone, that I think I’d rather have two or three other guitars (or more!) by other manufacturers than this old turd.
Cheep tailpiece doesn’t work.
Not using the dogear P-90 was a mistake. Same with the 60 neck
I disagree somewhat. I feel like they were going for the earlier 1959 aesthetic. That guitar had a more obscure single-coil. This form factor of P90 is a worthy replacement, IMO.
*1958.
Epiphone is having a personality crisis. Reminds me of the super high end custom shop level First Act and the Walmart garbage that everyone associates with that brand.
I only paid $1,998 for my Gibson USA Les Paul GT! It’s way cooler and better than these expensive Epis!
No rolled body edges so now it's kind of a Tele square slab body. This Coronet is really an 'Esquire' double cut but P90 is 'more versatile' than a Tele bridge pup. Think I like this better than a Les Paul Double Cut Jr or the Esquire. See how it sits on a strap though.
looks better than the Gibson Theodore
LoL
A boring as fuck strat looks better than the Theodore.
Anything looks better than a Theodore. I hate those damn things.
Shots fired!
debatable
Agreed, Theodore is a dog. Looks like something even the Herman’s Hermits wouldn’t play.
Nutty pricing!
When I was about 14 I saw a batwing stock cherry version in a store that played amazingly and sounded great, it was only $280.00 I always wished I had the cash at that age.
I had one of those, my friend did too. They were cheaply made, and had wicked tuning wobbles, from the skinny and outwardly joined neck. Honestly, it looked quite cool, but you didn't miss anything 😊
3:20 THIS is exactly why I don't have a tobacco/vintage sunburst Junior. I really want one that goes from bright yellow (not brown) to black, but there aren't any physical shops near me that carry them, and ordering online, even with photos available, you never know what you'll get due to random lighting/lenses/etc.
The Coronet has superb upper fret access and my old Coronets and Olympics always played and sounded GREAT!
Salutations Austin!
Thank you very much for featuring some of these Epiphone Guitars 🎸. I actually have an old Epiphone Olympic model with a single pickup and the batwing headpiece. I replaced the old pickup with a custom built Seymour Duncan that is a stacked humbucker that is switchable to use just a single coil. It also has the Vibrola tremolo bar as well and a Leo Quan Badass Bridge. It has really aged beautifully over the years, and it plays and sounds great.
It has a simple one ply pick guard.
Thanks for sharing!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
☀️✨🎸
This is pretty badass, the ebony version might as well be a Vigilante Carlstroem signature! Gibson needs to send him a few.
Trogly spoke his wisdom "The angle shot can be very helpful"
When I bought my Les Paul AAA top from sweetwater , the front shot did not show the great flame.
The angle shot tipped me off, and when the guitar arrived , it has super nice book matched flame.
I saw your video on the Gibson Supreme, & decided i had to have one of those. (Was gonna get a Standard) Unlike yours, mine came 100% flawless! So happy!
It's $100 more than a LP Junior. I'm thinking that the LP would hold it's resale value.
Theres a sucker born every day, and Gibson knows how to find them better than anyone else.
Nailed it .
Nah only to the ones who can't afford epiphones
Great that they are willing to remind us all that the Wishire/Crestwood started out as a double cut, set neck Tele/Esquire copy. Shoulda came with a New Yorker.
To each his own, but that instrument looks like something K-Mart sold in1974. An acquired taste, collectors item I suppose...
Maybe Gibson should reintroduce Orville by Gibson for their “budget” import models . And use the epiphone brand for their Epiphone legacy models (Coronet, Casino, etc)
That’s exactly what they should do.
I don't know how others feel about so far. But I feel quite disapointed with Gibson. After waiting years and years for a Reissue or LTD run of the '58/'59 Epiphone Coronet, somehow even after showing us they can make similar pickup to the New Yorker with Reissue of the Zephyr for celebrating 150 years (even though it was a Mini-Humbucker instead of a Single-Coil). They just slapped a P90 on it and called it a day. Only positive thing I have to say is that they did the un carved body and Carousel Knobs right.
I've always thought that these are basically just double cut teles. Body dimensions had to have been copied. It happens. If you look at Ford & Chevy, Gibson & Fender. In those days were very much copying one another in the height of their competitive rise. Even if you look at offsets. The jazzmaster came first, then you have a firebird (which I love) which is basically a reverse of a jazzmaster, so then later the "non-reverse" comes out which shows how much the body is like a jazz but with hugley rounded off pointed edges.. and if you really think about it a jazz is really just kind of an explorer with much more rounded points. Explorer & jazz both came out in 58'! it's cool to look at certain models side by side in similar release periods..with cars as well. You can see the competitive inspiration. Btw I love Gibson & Fender, so no shade intended.
those guitars were awesome a total working mans guitar a slab of mahogany and a p90 100% awesome
My theory is they are about to lose some market share with Eastman guitars getting picked up by sweetwater. Some of their epi pricing seems inline with some of Eastmans stuff suddenly.
Trogley, check out Eastman SB59V and the SB55V. Lightweight, nitro, and lollar pups. They are legit my friend ! 🐉🎸📺
Too bad Eastman doesn't use nitro anymore 😥
I'm not sure that I would pay those prices for some of those models, but I will admit it would be nice if Epiphone was suddenly freestanding instead of just being that outsource outlet for Gibson building its own knockoffs. What people don't realize without doing a little bit of reading is that Gibson probably learned everything it did about building archtop guitars from Epiphone.
You should document the Epiphone Elitist Japanese Exclusive Tamio Okuda Coronet, only 300 made, I own one, probably one of the best playing guitars i own.
Epiphone elitist were great guitars
I like the output jack location on the new Epiphone coronet insted of it being on the face. and if the quality is there i agree with the price hike.
As far as looks go I think the Coronet made in China is a nicer guitar. The one from China has nice rounded edges making it more comfortable to play, a better looking pickguard, and nicer looking volume/tone knobs. For over 3x more money for USA-made they should have at least given it the appearance of higher quality. $1600 is way too much for such a bare bones guitar, especially when the one made in China is nicer looking.
Exactly right. The overseas ones are great guitars, I have 2 of them, and they play as well as my L.P. D/C does.
Epiphone also did an Asian-made solidbody series within the last 4-5 years, consisting of a Coronet, a Wilshire, and a Crestwood Custom, all with the bikini-plaque headstock. I hope they haven’t been discontinued-they looked like a really good deal.
One of the guitarists from the band ' The HIVES ' plays a vintage 59' Coronet that I thought was/is cewl , I can appreciate the reissues , it'd be cool if Gibson could meet us half way and give us the Silver Fox finish...Thanks Trogly !
There's pictures online of Ace Frehley playing a Coronet in his younger years.
Hey - I have a 1960 Epi Coronet and it has the bikini logo and the newer body ( not slab ) It really is a great rocker and while this one is a mix of the 59 and the 60 it still is something different. Suspect the street price will be several hundred less.
the odd shaped epi's are the best :)
"Hollow bodies have a limited audience" . . . So this is what they come up with?
It being more than a junior is an absolute joke
I hope they do the Crestwood or Sorrento. The import models are fantastic.
i like Epiphone USA. I think that they should do more of this instead of the $1300 Chinese made Epiphones, just don't have them be as "Hand made" like the Gibson counterpoints.
Was at the Garage today. The Murphys were insane. The Epi's have a huge room. The Coronets on the floor were sweet. Thin necks
Crestwood Custom pops. love the inlays!
That epiphone crestwood model actually is in production i think because theyre sold in major music shops here in turkey
Personally, I would love to see the batwing headstock come to the Epiphone Explorer and a Firebird with a non-reverse!
The problem with the Kalamazoo headstock is not the shape of the open book design at the top. It's the wider base and wider tuner spacing at the bottom.
I'd get a Fender American professional ii or for not much more a Vintage ii.
I personally think Fender is a better value for the money over Gibson.
@@polycube868 same here. I was looking at a Les Paul, but will probably go with the Fender Vintage ii 72 Thinline. I actually had a Les Paul once with classic 57 humbuckers. They sucked and should have never bought it.
@@Bodiddley788 nice
@@Bodiddley788 I've had multiple Fender products from 2 guitars (an MIM Strat and an American Pro II Tele) to amps and cables, all had excellent build quality and still work.
They def designed those control knobs on Minecraft 😂
Can you please review the epiphone es 335 with bigsby in olive drab?
To me, I'm old enough to remember Epihones as the "consolation prize" of guitar brands.
I had a Wilshire with the Bat Wing headstock
I wonder what it would look like with a Les Paul Jr pickguard on it
I like it, ir reminds me of Mosrite’s Ventures Models or the Univox Hi Flier Phase I,II,III,IV Models
I almost pulled the trigger on an Epiphone Scroll 550 a while back on reverb. I don’t know much about them but it caught my eye and was about to be an impulse purchase
A USA scroll reissue would be insane! Haha
Even though I'm definitely not in the market for this guitar, I always love when Epiphone comes out with anything that's unique to them. I have no problem with buying an Epiphone, I have no problem buying inexpensive guitars (questionable for this new release), but I don't love when it's "just a cut down Gibson". I do own that ~$450 import version of the Coronet and I absolutely love it. Playing a single pickup guitar has taught me so much about my tastes in pickup configurations.
It's the same thing as the import with a different pickguard
I think the 60s asymetric bodyshape is a lot better looking.
The knobs are octogonal, eight-sided.
Two words, okay names, Marriot and Steve. Ironic that the two Epiphone USA electrics were made famous by my fellow Brits 😂
Those knobs are octagons not hexagons
Epiphone is trippin here lately, most Epiphone fans like myself liked them because they were affordable, decent guitars. But there's no way id give $1000+ for any epi, USA made or not
At this point you’re literally just judging based on what it says on the headstock. A USA made Epiphone is of the same quality as Gibson USA stuff. There is absolutely no reason to somehow say a guitar is inferior and must be less than $1000 simply because it says Epiphone on it when it’s USA made.
in the sixties they were made in the same factory, this whole “epiphone is lame” thing is a modern invention
Cesar being the ceo is the best thing to happen to Gibson and epiphone
For their shareholders yeah
How so? This is a budget/student style guitar. So imo it's severely overpriced
Just play a guitar and accept your opinion amounts to nothing.
A GIBSON Les Paul Junior is $1600. Even if it’s made in USA, why would someone pay $100 more for a similar spec Epiphone?!
Yeah, I’ll take the Les Paul Junior with Gibson on the headstock and save $100 while I’m at it. My Gibson SG special has both a bridge & neck p90 pickup with binding and I got it for $1500.
I’d pick the new 58-59 Coronet over a Gibson LP Junior any day.
@@Subropontesyeh as would I.
Yeah, its a bit of a head scratcher.
Personally? I think they're signaling price increases for Gibson...
@@trevor4533 Gibson is trying to bring the good Epiphone back, which is sad how much resistance their getting from people. From 58 to 1970 Epiphone and Gibsons were made side by side with the same quality and they produced amazing iconic instruments but the brand’s reputation got tainted when they went overseas in 1970 and started producing budget guitars. They’re not trying to make Epiphone more expensive to raise Gibson prices, they’re making Gibson quality Epiphones with Gibson prices, like it was in the 60s, whilst still offering the overseas ones as a budget option and I think the plan is to eventually bring the whole original line up back to the US with Gibson quality and have all the options for every budget, but before then people need to stop seeing Epiphone as just another budget brand, that’s why they’re going slow with the transition and people are giving them a lot of shit.
Do you want a high end hollow body from them? You can buy an Es330 or a Casino for the same price and quality or get an cheaper overseas one. Do you want a junior? You can get a Gibson Junior or an Epi Coronet for the same price with the same quality or get a cheap overseas one. Want a slope shoulder dreadnought? You can get a J45 or a Texan for the same price and quality or get a cheaper overseas one. Want a square shoulder dreadnought? You can get a Humminbird or a Frontier for the same price and quality or get a cheaper overseas one. You get my point.
And their newer higher end overseas Epiphones that everyone is flipping out about is designed to be a bridge between them.
So you have very cheap overseas, cheap overseas, higher end overseas, Gibson made american ones and then Custom Shop, 4 levels of guitars, for every budget and focusing on all the models (Epiphone and Gibson) instead of just thinking “Epiphone is supposed to be a cheap alternative” because they weren’t originally.
I’m very excited to see what they’re doing with Epiphone, I think it’s a great move and I can’t wait until people stop being stubborn to see all the original Epiphone designs that are much cooler than Gibson’s in my opinion being offered in a high end version, like they used to.
I can’t afford a vintage Sheraton so I got a Custom Shop ES355, if Gibson was offering a Custom Shop Epiphone Sheraton with the original specs and quality I would’ve got that without thinking twice because I think they’re much cooler.
@@Subropontes Right, but the Coronet isn't the same price. Its $100 more than a Gibson LP Jr and SG Special.
I suppose time will tell, but I really don't have a good feeling on this.
Pickguard is a deal breaker but nice to see more USA option
My pops has a 60 Olympic Epi special. I thought it was lame when I was a kid but now am impressed with his taste.
Omg they brought back the slab body coronet!!!!
I’ve been waiting so long for them to make an import version with the batwing headstock 😩
I have always loved this guitar! The old pickgaurd is a big miss. I agree about the old headstock as well. Although I do like the wonky epi badge. The price doesn't match what they are doing atm ..
I have 2 Epi Wilshires, one with the badge, the other with the batwing headstock, but made overseas.
Both play as well as my Les Paul D/C, great guitars. And heaps cheaper.
Look for a used Thomas Rodriguez Buxton- to me they are the quintessential double cut epiphone. There are a few on music emporium. Wow!
Yeah, his are amazing
they are probable using Beato model mahogany planks so that's why it's thinner? no idea why they would do that when they sell les pauls
I like the epi. coronet, whilshire, and crestwood models but waaay too expensive. Asian is the way to go if want one of these but not pay crazy dollars.😜 🎸👍
I bought an Epi Masterbilt for $599 many years ago and it’s better than my $2k Martin.
The Beatto is a Special not a Junior. I have a thing about people conflating Juniors and Specials. Yes, they are a lot alike but it’s 2 pickups vs. 1.
Basically Epiphone USA is going after that PRS S2 market
Make a good slide guitar.
but the Beato has two pups and attendant controls. I am not that interested in a single pickup or a black guitar for that matter.
The body is the same as some of the old ones. The knobs are the old Epiphone style knobs!!
Looks interesting, but I prefered USA Casino
For something that austere I'd spend 1/3 on something Chinese or Korean that's 2/3rds as good.
In 2012 Epiphone did a limited run of called the 50th Anniversary Crestwood Custom, theses came with a hardcore and COA. allegedly 1962 were produced but as far as Iknow they weren’t USA built.
I have one of these if your interested?
Any Gibson/ Epiphone fan can tell what year is alex turner Coronet? (The singer and sometimes lead guitarist of the arctic Monkeys) Or if it is vintage or not
Outro sounds like Stills!
@Trog I'm surprised you didn't mention that the finish was nitro
I wish they went with the batwing 6 in a row headstock, rather than the 3x3 with the bikini bottom logo. Bringing back the umbrella knobs is pretty cool though.
Why is there a jockstrap on the headstock?
It's called a bikini logo and is period correct.👍🏻
trog that's an OCTAGON knobs! octagon!
Funny the original frontiers had the big doofy headstock not the newer style whatever it’s called
What you call a "rout" is properly called a "housing". Housings are cut by using a router (or hammer and chisel)
Kind of priced to compete with the Gibson LP Jr, with a double cut… but without the “draw” of being called a “Les Paul”… the one with symmetrical OR asymmetrical body and butterfly pickguard looks better… but I hate the batwing headstock… the Silver FOX does look cool, though
I disagree, my made in USA casino sounds and plays amazing, even better than my es 333. I'm begging for a USA Sheraton or Riviera. The archtops epis used to be a higher end guitars compared to Gibsons back in the 40s
I feel like People aren't really talking a out how epiphone is not that brand that we knew 5/6 years ago. People, epiphone is the new gibson, at least, the new gibson for giging musicians, I think that the changes in models are due to gibson trying to achieve a even more exclusive status, but to keep the musicians in line, they are upgrading and closing the gap between a gibson and a les paul, through the open book headstock, gibson electronics, and the price? The price is equal to a gibson 5/6 years ago, for me is very clear that epiphone is going to take the gibson place in stages, and gibson is becoming a collection driven or higher end guitars
Why do they put the volume and tone knobs so far back on the new Epiphone? I like the LP Jr.'s knob locations better. I'd still buy the LP jr. before the Epiphone.
I said it again. Gibson should make epiphone brand as their own thing. Use Orville brand again as cheaper/far east version of Gibson juat like sterling on Ernie ball music man.
don’t forget about maestro
That Coronet looks like one of those guitars you find in a five and dime store. Those stores really don't exist anymore but, you know what I mean 😅
This, Sg, junior, special, double cut. All very similar and this is way expensive.
Beautiful guitars
What's up everyone!?! Wow, short video tonight.
