      There were metal barriers around it. Fence posts and an entire fence. That would stop an idling vehicle.
      And it wasn't from the road, if you listened to the story, the vehicle came from a parking lot, through a small wooded area and into and through the fence. It's liquid natural gas, so even cracking it would let LNG leak out and vaporize to ignite at its leisure, likely from the ignition.
      Didn't hear anything more about the driver, as if the driver was able to get clear of the vehicle or not.
      Still, what are we to do? Mandate steel walls around large propane tanks too? Gasoline storage tanks require special bunkers if they're not below ground?

Accidental, health issues, whatever the reasoning is: They still drove off, drove somewhere they really shouldn’t have been, and hit something in an area they were not meant to go to. It’s obvious too, it’s all dirt, it’s surrounded by fences…. Just irritates me to know a singular person did this. I’d almost be less mad if it were on purpose, at least then I would know it was calculated somehow, or to cause the most damage, some kind of purpose (no matter how twisted, at least there is a purpose, or an end it is pushed towards). Sounds like Bull shit to me!!! That SUV drove thru the gate and hit that valve!!!! It didn't come from Walmart lot like they are saying! The fence isn't damaged any where except the road side gate!!!!Plus if you look close there are tire tracks in the dirt leading from the gate to where the SUV is sitting. NOT from the direction of Walmart lot. Why you people LIE?
    my question is why in the hell is there 20 miles of pipe with out a shut off valve??? do you People think its wize to only have valves 20 to 30 miles apart??? Hell no its not!!!! every 5 or 10 miles there needs to be one so they can shut off the gas before and after a rupture like this!!!!!! Plus its a SUV that crashed the gate and caused this???? It didnt come from Walmart lot the fence isnt damaged on that side! The SUV is facing Walmart not away from it!

      @@a.b.5372 ???

    • @RacheWA1
      @RacheWA1 Месяц назад

      Okay, so, firstly the car is not sitting where it stopped after hitting the pipeline, the car is sitting where it was thrown from the explosion after hitting the pipeline, tire tracks are irrelevant. I can't see the fence like you can obviously.
      But to also answer your other question, The idea of installing shutoff valves every thousand feet in pipelines is certainly a reasonable one for mitigating the impact of leaks or breaks. However, there are several reasons why this is not typically done:
      Cost: Installing shutoff valves at such frequent intervals can be prohibitively expensive. Each valve requires not only the device itself but also installation, maintenance, and monitoring. The cost of materials and labor can add up significantly, especially over long distances.
      Maintenance and Reliability: More valves mean more points of potential failure. Each valve requires regular maintenance to ensure it operates correctly when needed. If valves are too close together, the maintenance burden increases, potentially leading to a higher chance of malfunction.
      Operational Complexity: Frequent shutoff valves can complicate the operation of the pipeline. Operators must monitor and manage a larger number of valves, which increases the complexity of the control systems and can lead to operational inefficiencies.
      Pressure Management: Pipelines are designed to operate under specific pressure conditions. If shutoff valves are too close together, the sudden changes in pressure when a valve is closed can cause stress on the pipeline and potentially lead to further issues.
      Regulatory Standards: Pipeline safety regulations often dictate where and how many valves need to be installed. While many pipelines do have shutoff valves, they are typically placed based on risk assessments, geographical considerations, and regulatory guidelines rather than at uniform intervals.
      Technology Improvements: Advances in technology, such as remote monitoring systems and leak detection technology, are increasingly being used to detect leaks quickly. These systems can provide real-time data, allowing operators to respond to leaks without needing as many shutoff valves.
      In summary, while having shutoff valves every thousand feet could theoretically limit the impact of leaks, practical considerations around cost, maintenance, operational complexity, pressure management, and existing regulatory frameworks often lead to a more strategic placement of valves in pipeline systems.
