Yes this is a song about his close friends death but not his only tribute to him...Both Chinchilla and Ren were friends with this guy so they collaborated on a duo tribute...I dont know the name of the song Ren did solo for his friend off hand.... Ren and Chinchilla also did another song together called "Chalk outlines" that is also amazing and worthy of a listen....
Chinchilla is from London, England and she's ~13 years younger than Ren, who is from Anglesey, Wales. Both met only ~20 months ago for a busking session in Brighton and the collaborations on Chalk Outlines & How To Be Me. I don't think there's a chance for her to have met Joe when she was a little kid. Anyway, Chalk Outlines is a great song to react to and not quite as sad as this one. And the busking sessions, some people say "so-so", but I really like them, too.
