  • I discuss the thought process of converting plus/minus location to position.
Basically, we have to convert a square tolerance one into a circular tolerance zone.

It’s the whole square peg round hole, round peg square hole thing.

    great video as always
as a mechanical eng. in europe, i'd like to see a video about the main differences between ASME and ISO regarding GD&T/GPS

It’s a great topic. I’m still working on it.

But this short method would only apply to RFS, not necessarily MMC, correct?

I understand that by adding the MMC to the positional tol diameter, it only means you’re increasing the possibilities of assembly success by considering the bonus positional tolerances that you will get from the hole at its smallest diameter (MMC) to the hole at its largest diameter (LMC). You can opt either way (RFS or at MMC), but you must consider the mating components. In the case of a hole, it could be a pin, for example.
Also, in this particular case of Dean’s video, he’s showing us a hole on a plate, not enough thickness to bother put the MMC I guess.
Dean, please correct me if I’m wrong! 😅🙌🏼

Yes, the assembly has to be considered. If it’s a hole that accepts a pin for locating, like a dowel, then RFS is probably best. If the hole is just to clear a bolt, MMC may be a better choice.
