I haven't been studying because I don't understand it but watching your videos is making it a lot easier to understand the basic maths and a lot easier for me understand!!! Thank you.

      no. in the quadratic you have to do a square root. Here you don't. You do only factoring and addition/subtraction. This is why it is easier... at least when the results aren't great zonking multi-digit decimals. I learned squares up to 14, but not to 17. So if you don't know that 17 squared is 289 (the discriminant) then you really would have to solve for the square root, which is a nuisance unless you know the shortcut for that...

    There's another way to do it
    6x^2-x-2=0
    First, you turn the -x into two numbers with x as a coefficient.
    6x^2-4x+3x-2=0
    We split it up into this because if we factorize it, the numbers in the brackets will be the same.
    2x(3x-2)+1(3x-2)=0
    Then you take one of the brackets and multiply it with the numbers that are being multipled by the bracket.
    (3x-2)(2x+1)=0.
    There are two solutions. To find both of them, just take one bracket with numbers and variables and that should equal to 0.(Take away the brackets cause they are not needed).
    So,
    3x-2=0 or 2x+1=0
    3x=2 2x=-1
    x=2/3 x=-1/2
    This is just another way of doing it.

      @@divyoroy9056, Tecmath's 'way' is actually the same, we guess, as yours, but he (she) jumps it by a couple of fast tricks, without showing that the way is a right one, without showing that the results are really the roots of the thing. Your way shows up more mathematical, walking step by step and proving the rightness of each one. And so did our teacher, and did we, on school (continental Europe) years ago. Know what you are doing, prove your readers and yourself that it's right in any step, that's the beauty of algebra. We still prefer your way, that is, your way of taking logical steps. A little more ink or chalk, and then so totally clear!

    Rather than all that sign-switching jiggery-pokery, it is much safer just to use basic maths: 2xx + 8x - x - 4 = 0 => 2x(x+4) -1(x+4) = 0 => (2x-1)(x+4) = 0. The brackets in the middle step will always match. This was the method I learned as a teenager and it served me well all the way through uni, post grad and beyond.

    This type of teaching is only through memory, and no relationship to actually why you are doing these steps.

      Mia Hayes no school math has reasoning to why ur doing something like u can figure out a problem that u don’t know how to solve but this is all memorization

      @@tomaliafern4219 It's that it is only memorizing, but the purpose of "tricks" like this one is for doing things quicker. If you want to know why it's like that, you can try and prove it, an exercise for your brain. But once you're sure it works (either from proving it or because of trusting this channel, which i personally recommend), it just makes your tasks suddenly much quicker to do.

      I'm a mathematician and high school math teacher and I endorse this video. To the critics, how many of you do difference of squares all the way out? Or do square roots by hand instead of using a calculator? Do you use the standard paper and pencil way of dividing? THat's a trick too, as is multiplication of two digits by two digits that we were all taught. Sometimes the understanding comes much later or is irrelevant.

      To factor it, all you have to do is take each solution and rearrange it to make it equal to 0
      e.g. x=2/3 => 3x=2 => 3x-2=0
      x=-1/2 => 2x=-1 => 2x+1=0
      So 6x^2 - x - 2 = (3x-2)(2x+1)
