- Hi bass lovers! Check out our new video! Here's a comparsion of the 2 great instruments of 70's era.
Both basses have ash body & maple neck. '78 has Badass bridge installed. Both run in passive mode (though '78 has a built in Bartolini TCT preamp. But it is not engaged in this record). Installation of audio and video: Alexey Kudryashov.

Really nice comparison. I like the 74 better. Which is nice for me because I have a 74. Mine has EMGs. I live them.
Had a 73, a 78
Have a 76
And played so many of them.
What I found was that after 72 with the back pickup moved- the sound changed.. And as the 70s moved on towards 1977, that JB tone sounded more scooped than previous years (excellent for slapping)
But by 1978 already, quality control at fender had slipped so badly, that it was worth ‘jumping ship’ on fender USA, and moving towards the Japan JB copies,-or totally other style bass guitars completely (i.e; alembics & stingrays)

That 74 is how I expect a 70s jazz bass to sound. The high end is much more lively!
74 has it for my taste,maybe its the badass.
I wonder if I could get rid of its beauty snoring sound for getting more of a blues tone. I'm only finding slap and fusion demos with this. I have an offer for around $1800 for this bass (new, but open box)... I'm more on the blues side, but I play disco-like stuff sometimes. My main concern is if it's versatile enough for blues.

I got both a 78 and a 74 and both the original and the BA-II bridge. I fooled around, changing the bridges to see what it does. IME the bridge makes the biggest difference in tone.

У 74 более живой "деревянный" звук, думаю он и в микс будет лучше ложиться. Для сольных партий возможно больше подойдёт 78-й, хотя и 74-й, сольно звучит очень благородно-породисто, просто он мягче. Кайф, иметь оба! С чем и поздравляю!

I think the preamp makes a difference even though it’s off, though I can’t be sure...it makes the 78 sound more lively...it could just be the pickups though...late ‘70s J pickups are phenomenal..
Thank you. We recorded both basses passive. Preamp not engaged. So passive it sounds the same like it was before preamp installation.

BadAss bridge on 78 really denaturates original sound...that's why 74 sounds sweeter and more sensual !
Marcus uses it and it makes sense. Love it too. And active on board preamp as well (not in this video).
@@alexeyzavolokin of course it makes sense ! I never told that Geddy Lee sounds with no sense 😄 !
But Badass mass tends to change the tone more agressive.
Are the pickups all original
'78 has original pups, '74 has one original and another '82 or '84 pickup. But the main difference in tone is because of the wood,cause both of them sounds much different unplugged.

Thank you. Just for this record we used Elixir strings on both basses. But usually I prefer DR lo rider nickel.
74 более универсальный, да и наверняка полегче будет по массе.
Что бы ни говорили ценители и знатоки Фендеров, но... Как ни крути, идея сохранения их звука была и остается неизменной, не смотря на обертона. И, что не отнять, да, все инструменты по своему индивидуальны. Нет одинаково звучащих. Также, как и нет плохо, или хорошо звучащих... Много есть форумов, где разные "специалисты" сравнивают годы выпуска, соотнося с качеством закатки ладов, намотки датчиков и пр... Просушки древесины и т.д... Возможно, в этом есть зерно истины. Если полагаться на их опыт, опять же, который зачастую сомнения вносит... Все инструменты Фендер, как ни верти, очень схожи по звуку, они определяют своей формой и звучанием именно этот легендарный бренд, не зависимо от того, где были произведены. С небольшой оговоркой - по ценовому диапазону. Много музыкантов спорят о Мексике, Японии или США... Типа, что лучше... Если не брать во внимание, естественно, Малайзию и Китай... Любой инструмент при желании можно отстроить по мензуре, высоте струн и прогибу грифа, не говоря уже о замене начинки... И, самое главное, наличие умелых рук, способных заставить эту вещь звучать в последствии... А все выше озвученные мнения - лишь колыхания воздуха за отсутствием опыта. Прошу прощения за резкий такой комментарий... Через мои руки много прошло джаз басов, мексов, амеров и япошек... Но остановился я, как ни странно именно на Fender japan 75 jb 2008 года выпуска... Он всех уделал))) так что, категоричность в этом вопросе не вполне уместна)
много букв, мало смысла. я написал то, что слышно даже по этому видео. Да и по поводу массы - это тоже факт, с 75 года они стали тяжелый ясень использовать. Бас весом 5кг не каждому подойдет, тоже к универсальности пунктик.
