Hi Gina! This was so much fun. This was the genesis of the Tori/Jim collaborations. While we wait for the next one from this super-team to drop (Close To You) I know you’ll have the next super-team to start. Just joyful (sometimes emotional) music from her and her partners. Yes, The Medley shows off her range very well. What I’ve always found, well since I realized, interesting. Walk On By is a duet. While looking straight at the camera, she sang Richard/harmony/Karen parts showing off her lows and highs. When you see Carpenters doing it, they each did the proper part. Tori was along initially and had to cover both. Amazing. Also the mid point Carpenters Appreciation was Tori’s editing. She added that initially for the little instrumental riff they did. That clip was from The Ed Sullivan Show in November 1970. It was outdoors, live to tape and Ke]aren was on drums. Amazing talent. Tori didn’t drum but did all the voices and production using Richard’s created Karaoke track for the Japanese market, just brilliant. Thanks again and I can’t wait for the next one with Dan. Thank you so much for reacting to Joe's request, this is one of my favorites that Tori has released and Jim's added collaboration puts it over the top, for me at least. I know that it was one of Tori's most challenging efforts as far as Carpenters material, with the multiple harmonies and the fact that she does it all by ear. The ease and gentle clarity of her voice combined with an impressive display of her vocal range just makes this such a a heartwarming piece to watch. While the arrangement and harmonies are identical to the Carpenters version of this medley, you can clearly hear the differences between Karen and Tori. And in that respect, like others I've seen comment, she's not Karen, but she's 100% Tori, and that's an incredibly beautiful thing.

I have seen it and I totally agree, it's obviously the performance that Tori based her rendition on, rather than the Ed Sullivan appearance and it is uncanny. Perhaps I've become so familiar with Tori's personal "voice" that I can easily distinguish her tonalities. And yes, Gina, you should watch this link that Joe has included because it is a perfect illustration of the tonal qualities and pitch precision that she genuinely shares with Karen. Such a gem.
@@SAnnun-hs1io this is based on the album cut. Close To You was only on the Sullivan Show version but that one was live! This BBC one may be a partial, not sure. So when RC made the Karaoke track, he based it on the album cut, natch. Also, me too. I hear Tori above all voice similarities now. I can tell where she’s going but it’s Tori first and foremost. Though on the hidden gem, I Need To Be In Love, from two years ago is 95% KC. LOL. Carole reacted.
I hope you remember who Tori sounds almost exactly like. Have you reacted to her song Something In Your Eyes yet? She performed this at the Carpenters 55th memorial service in Downey California,.............let's see...... it has to be about a month ago now. This was a song written by her Brother Richard, and he had hoped that Karen would sing it, I think for another album (not sure), but Karen died before she could even see it. So he recorded it with Dusty Springfield instead. Tori sang it and many in that congregation cried, but it's because I believe (I wasn't there), my guess is because many knew Karen because she and her family lived there for quite awhile. Listen to it if you haven't already, I know you'll like it.
