BEEF NETFLIX EXPLAINED (PSYCHOANALYSIS + BREAKDOWN)

- SPOILERS AHEAD #BEEFNetflix is a fascinating commentary on how shame keeps us in a cycle of avoidance & how the projection of our flaws onto other people, acts as a mode of self delusion and preservation of the ego. A pattern that often leads to long term suffering.
In this video I take the hit #Netflix series BEEF and do a psychoanalysis on the main characters - Amy & Danny.
This series was one of my favourite TV shows in a long time. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong bring Lee Sung Jin's words to life and I will likely be rewatching this series over and over again :p
What do you think? Let me know in the comments below
I used to be such a hateful person, still sort of am unfortunately. I’d constantly judge and critique everyone around me for tiny things. My therapist told me that I might just be projecting my own insecurites. I definitely was. Everything I called them was exactly what I hated in myself
What's the solution? Asking because I may be in the same boat. Cause the way I see it, those things that we criticize remain bad projection or not, no? Like if someone says they'll do something but then they don't do it, that's a poor choice, no? I feel like most people's solution would be to stop seeing these things as bad but I don't see how that makes sense. What do you think?
@@Blablablahx3I believe what’s important is to remember that everybody is constantly changing and figuring things out. Empathy, understanding, and gentle criticism if needed are what help people in their growth, not judgement or negativity. Of course to embody this much needed kindness is not an easy thing at all (something I need to work on for sure lol) which is why it’s hard to come across. In my opinion, the solution wouldn’t be to just view negative things people do as a positive but to approach it from a different perspective altogether. These negative actions and traits are often products of that person’s environment. It’s really hard to describe in a RUclips comment because words are just words while true understanding comes from lived experience. (Plus I’m just trying to figure things out too.) However, I do know that helping yourself helps others. Helping others helps yourself. Judgmental and hateful thinking is an obstacle we must all overcome to be able to love ourselves and others, flaws and all.
@@Blablablahx3 I feel the same all the time I want to 3 therapist and still couldn’t find the answers
@Blablablahx3 my suggestion would be : understand that you aren't angry with them or their choice, you're angry at yourself for having the same weakness but choosing to project it onto them. Also, understand that they are a different person, they may have different circumstances that have led them to not do what they said they would. There's no fulfillment or joy YOURE getting from criticizing others, you're only giving yourself a false sense of superiority but deep down you know it's a lie. Focus on yourself. Giving energy to yourself, and ignore others. Try to be understanding of both yourself and others, and contemplate, journal, and attempt to be better daily. That's just my 2 cents, hope it helps 😊
One of the deepest, most emotionally intelligent series and description I’ve seen yet. I wish there was more content in the world like this. It made me feel emotions I hadn’t felt in a long time.
❤
I am so humbled by your comment. Thank you so much for your kind words and support 🫶
It’s amazing how the show managed to pack and properly explore so many themes. Revenge, shame, Korean and Chinese American assimilation, class, mental health, So much more.
All in what just felt like a few episodes. They did beyond better than I expected.
The beef between different Asian countries was my favorite part of the show. So accurate
Danny and Amy are "twin flames", which is referenced in the show as new age spirituality, but makes sense psychologically in the sense of someone who mirrors you.
As a result, they project on to each other their Shadow, which is the darkest parts about themselves. As you say, their "beef" is really with themselves and the shame they carry. The acceptance at the end is them accepting themselves.
Great analysis.
i literally thought the same thing! i told my brother that may and danny are twin flames and he was like wtf lol
One gets the impression that there is some chemistry when they first meet face to face. At which point you know they end up together, as they have the same baggage.
yep and in the last episode , they fusion lol
it's really insane that this show has a really deep meaning. Glad someone covered it. Not enough people talk about this show. Great video!
Thank you so much for watching ! I really enjoyed this series 🤓😇🙏
Ditto
Loved it and the video 🫶
Definitely the best video I’ve seen about Beef that ACTUALLY dives into the deeper themes and nuances. Great job, I really enjoyed how you connected everything. Keep it up!
So humbled it could resonate! Thank you for watching and showing love 😇🙏
Your probably the same as me, watching all the videos made in the weeks following the release waiting for the one video that hits it like this did. Class take
I agree. The insight shared in this video is both authentic and even actionable for the average person. Amazing review!
❤
Agreed! I just finished watching this series and was looking for a good review on the themes. Great review!
Amazing analysis! The show doesn't dive as deep into them, but other characters like Fumi and Edwin show similar cycles of shame. Fumi trying to keep up her appearance of success even when she's in financial trouble. And when we first meet Edwin, he gives off the impression that he's winning at life but his actions say otherwise. He jabs at Daniel's sign repair, gets angry playing basketball, and pranks with mail subscriptions.
Paul and George stand out to me. Like the others, they too experience shameful things, but are much more willing to admit them without hesitation.
There's so much to unpack in the series, I'll have to give it another watch. The only bad thing is that now I feel like Burger King chicken sandwich.
You’re absolutely right! Shame is a prevalent theme throughout the series and shows itself in subtle ways in all the characters in the series - thanks for watching ! Could def go for spicy chicken sandwich and some nuggets right now too 😂
Also, Naomi's character is another demonstration of shame-- she hides herself in a designer garment bag to allow herself to be a "bad," petty person on social media.
We know Amy and Danny are twin flames but I never stopped to think about the ways Paul and George mirrored eachother. It would be interesting to see them meet and realize their similarities after working through their beef (the affair with Paul and Amy)
Damn, that's deep. It's actually a reflection of how screwed up our society is, and how we're groomed to prioritize material things that aren't really important to us, and to shame one another, and it all just creates this culture of oppression, and repression, driven by vanity, and our desire to be seen as good people, often at the cost of not actually being good people. And we spend so long lying to one another, and to ourselves; that we cultivate our own anger and frustrations, but are never fully aware of where it all comes from.
I agree! We often settle for being “liked” rather than being vulnerable enough to be truly loved. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment 🙏🙏🙏
@@Itsnicholasle Sad thing is, this society is so backwards that when we do decide to take off the mask, and side with honesty, many of us won't be liked or loved for that. We just end up alone cuz people don't wanna hear the truth; they just wanna hear what's convenient.
@@sizlax it’s true - many won’t love us. But as depicted in BEEF - they won’t love us even with our ego identities to hide us either. It’s just as lonely to be surrounded by people who “like” you for who you’re not. The people who love you and accept you when you let go of the mask will be very rare. But rare is what makes it valuable. 🙏
@@Itsnicholasle You speak truth. I only wish the majority weren't so blind. I've grown so tried of life in capitalist society, that I'm traveling to the Philippines on the other side of the world in a few months, to see if I can find anything worth living for over there.
I'm aware of the irony that even the Philippines has bowed down to Capitalism at this point, but it's still at least got some of it's own unique culture and attitudes.
@@sizlax Every society prioritizes material things, no matter what "ism" they follow. Greed is everywhere regardless of where you travel... but I encourage you to make the move and see for yourself, because there is a lot of good out there too!
Peace! 😁
I believe that external problems also come into play when talking about Beef. Danny and Ami feel as though they are let down constantly by the people that are supposed to love them. And aren’t they not? I feel like this show’s main thing is delving into the mind’s of a seemingly senselessly angry person, and providing a perspective that is necessary to understanding Danny and Ami, and ourselves as well.
Interesting observation! I believe the reason they can’t be loved by the people around them is because they don’t present themselves honestly to those around them. Amy isn’t honest with her husband or family - so how could she be loved? Danny bolsters his external image and hides his shortcomings from his little brother - so how could he love him? To be loved is to be loved for all of who we are - so to be loved we must show even the qualities we’re most ashamed of 🙏
@@Itsnicholasle I'm autistic and have no filter so everyone knows everything about me, but no one loves me. Thoughts?
@@Blablablahx3you have to let the people who will love you for you find you, don't go looking. That's how you set yourself up to get your feelings hurt. Your tribe will be drawn to you and your honesty. Unfortunately, most people prefer pretense bc it makes them comfortable, and honestly, those are people you'd be far better off without. Having said that, it's also important to make the effort to understand when your lack of filter might exacerbate a situation--and recognize when it's best to keep some things to yourself. If you can acknowledge that your having no filter may rub people the wrong way, then you can try to decipher when it is and isn't appropriate to say certain things. I hope you are able to surround yourself with the right, wonderful people 😊
I’ve been scouring RUclips for analyses on Beef. I’ve seen several videos that are 3-6x longer than this one, and I’m realizing how much people aren’t truly understanding the show. This hits the nail on the head. Thank you.
I am so flattered! Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement 🙏🙏🙏
What’s so special to me about the show is how Amy and Danny are so intertwined with another and went through so many conflicts yet Amy not Danny apologize with another at all or even utter the word sorry (to my knowledge) but it’s so different from other shows that the main characters didn’t try to Dismiss their actions neither good or bad but accepted them just like they accepted each other
Our shame is what keeps us from being loved. Powerful
Usually can't stand these types of videos. This was great, short, eloquent, and accurate to my perception of the show.
Wow - appreciate that Alex! Definitely a great compliment to receive - thank you so much for taking the time to tune in and share some love 🙏
As an Asian, BEEF was extremely uncomfortable to watch even though I JUST HAD TO binge the whole thing on Easter Monday. & that scene where the poor white woman dying horrifically was stuck in my head so I didn't really notice all that you broke down. Thank you for your psychoanalysis.
Yikes that scene was definitely horrifying 🫣 - appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave a comment Johannes! Def my favourite Netflix series in a long time!

Which episode is that
@@krizziafrias spoiler alert.....
episode 9...Naomi hit the door and jordan got stuck...
I thought so too but this was so real …
I love this show and your analysis, the acting and direction was really mindblowing, it perfectly translates the characters feelings in some scenes. This is by far one of the best shows I watched recently, because starts with a simple premise and then starts going deep with a lot of stuff for you think about. I gonna have to watch your video again, thank you
Totally agree! Thanks for watching and for the kind words 🙏😇
Hands down the best analysis of BEEF. Perfectly conveyed what I also interpreted as the meaning from the show.
Appreciate you watching! Haha great minds think alike Ryan 🙏
You articulated so well of what I felt aft watching the Beef. They say what you hate in others is actually what you have inside. It’s super hard for people to even acknowledge it because it hurts. But ironically, facing the truth is the only way to be free.
Personally, as a Korean who spent adolescence in North America (totally relatable!!) I truly think the Beef is one of the very best series that I’ve ever encountered in my life and hope others can also find the fun and the deep meaning behind it.
I was perusing your videos for more superb character analysis and was disappointed to not find more. This was so exceptionally well done and concise! I think I can speak for other viewers when I say we'd definitely come back for more insightful breakdowns of our favorite content, especially if it's more indie fare. A24 has been killing it recently! They released the emotion driven horror film, Talk To Me, which was also fantastic. I think you could really do that movie justice.
Now we need the extended version. This analysis was on the money!!!
Beautiful description, for which I'm thankful of. I truly enjoyed the series, but for me it was "BPD meets BPD" - which at a deeper level is what you so beautifully described.
This is my favourite analysis of the series, hands down. The way you articulated this was just chefs kiss. Rarely do shows resonate with me like this one did and you have summed it up perfectly. Going to binge your other videos now 😁
Amazing and concise summary. This show was so deep on multiple levels, but I was struggling to find the words to convey to others what I was feeling about it. You summed it up perfectly and hit all the major and most poignant points on the head. I paused, rewound and played your first statement over several times, writing it down even, before I realized you had included it in your video summary text below! Great breakdown. I'm subscribing.
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing! Truly humbled that this could resonate with you 🙏❤️
Oh yes. As I was watching the show, it did come to me, the shadow side of these two characters and how it was never being acknowledged. To complete ourselves, to make ourselves whole we need to integrate the shadow. And that is what the psychedelic experience helped these two realise. A very good analysis.
I agree. Beautifully articulated. Very calming voice. Thank you for this.
I love how you can reveal so much in such a concise way! Please do more of this as I just subbed to your channel :) I just watched the Netflix movie Hunger as well, it explores the dark social structure of upper class society and also the price of being special/successful as a person. Would love to hear your take on that too!
Appreciate you watching and subscribing!! I’ll definitely have to check it out 😇🙏
Just 3 episodes in and I searched for a review to validate how the series is making me feel. Indeed deep and piercing to some extent.
Finally someone EXPLAINED Beef! :)
Haha appreciate you! 😇🙏
Absolutely amazing! This movie represents how love is something is that is formed and represents true humanity. Unlike so many stupid love movies these days, this movie captures real people who go throwing what I think a lot of people go through. If people were honest with themselves and others and really get the help in understanding their feelings, more people could be vulnerable like this.
None of the videos I seen on the meaning of Beef explained had covered the message I was getting from the series. This is the first video I've seen that actually does. Good stuff man!
Thank you for diving deeper than the surface, compared to other videos. Beef was beautiful and I wanted to understand all the bits and pieces I picked up as I watched the series. Has me thinking about my own life and choices.
Brilliant interpretation and video!
man this shizz was deep bro, I thought it was mostly about the comedic/drama aspect of anger and pent up emotions, but the part about the trigger being a projection of what you see in yourself is a good nugget to digest.
Loved how specific you got into the themes of Beef. Great stuff. Keep it up!
Thank you so much! Is there a series or show you’d like to see next? 🤔😛
What an incredible commentary on humanity. Your humility, grace, and spoken truth are so greatly appreciated. I am truly holding your beautiful words.
Lauri this has got to be one of the kindest comments I have ever received. I am humbled that this message could resonate with you! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave some love 🙏❤️
@@Itsnicholasle 100%, you have a beautiful way of looking at the work/ the world. I loved the series (especially episode 10). It is very powerful and you rewarded it well through your own articulate and thoughtful way of seeing it.
I am writing my own screenplay right now and some of the things you mentioned are a big part of what I am writing about. Life is such a journey. :)
Brilliant commentary about the show. So well done! Insightful and thought provoking. Thank you for making it.
this was the best synopsis i have watched thus far
great analysis, thanks Mr. Le. By the looks of the trailer, I really thought this film was just about the rage incident and subsequent breakdown rather than an entire expose of the asian american psyche
Thank you! Haha I agree - it was a pleasant surprise - my favourite show of the year for sure
This is the BEST explanation of Beef. I'm just like Amy
**claps hands** im subscribing, so beautifully crafted and well thought out.
If you seek revenge against someone dig 2 graves... Good analysis btw.
U did an amazing job making this video man! I feel like u hit the nail on the head!
man, i cried and cried during parts of this. Splendid TV
Definitely fought back tears on several occasions watching this series 🥺🥹
Absolutely fantastic analysis! I was incredibly moved by the show. And your interpretation of it is profound and spot on. New subscriber! Thank you!
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on Beef🙌🏽 bro did an amazing job diving into the true meaning behind the storylines and characters 💯
Wow thank you so much for the kind words my friend! Appreciate you watching 🙏
Well said. From my observations the characters Danny and Amy, saw each other and to them it was like looking at a mirror for the first time. A reflection. They saw something that was deep inside them and it finally appeared before them. It’s what Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn “The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained.” I think after the last episode, they finally were able to reach that bridgehead
really awesome analysis!! I felt like there was an underlying theme or lesson the show was trying to show us when I was watching, but I couldn't put it into words, like you! thanks for the quality video and for helping me understand
Thank you for covering this deep analysis of BEEF as not just about 2 angry Asians❤️.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! So happy you could get something out of this video 🙏🙏
Loved how you said that we all have good and bad.I’m tired of people always trying to define a good or bad person.
Judgement is the very thing that leads to shame - and shame is what gets in the way of love! Thank you so much for your comment 🙏
*Great analysis.*
Really appreciate your interpretation of the show. Very similar to what I felt was going on here, all the while touching on everything from classism, racism, familial bonds, religion, perception vs reality and so much more. Not since The Hateful 8 have I seen a piece of art that diagnoses the current political and cultural climate so honestly, except Beef posits that true human connection and loss of ego is the answer to our cynicism. Even if the American Dream is a lie, even if money and religion can’t save you, we have each other. I like that.
Thank you so much for watching and leaving such a thoughtful comment! I agree! We build up our egos to protect ourselves. Sometimes protection can turn into hiding (behind material success or anything else) - and when we hide we can’t be seen and loved. ❤️
Tbh i am so impressed that u managed to dive so deep into the meaning of the show and explain it in such a short time
Haha I appreciate that! 🤓
Yep. Shame and never coming to terms with it, and letting their problems pile up over and over more and more, repeating the cycle over and over again. Lots of people experience this growing up, and until you learn to be better and face the consequence, you never feel free from it.
2:55 "He would rather forfeit the insurance policy..." I don't think his insurance would have covered it either way. Because the fire martial told him that since the fire was due to faulty wiring, "the construction company was on the hook" but he is his own construction company. So he would have to pay for the damages anyways. That's how I understood the show but maybe I'm wrong. But if you're right that he would have gotten insurance money if he told the truth, that makes his decision to lie even more sad.
Haha this is the part I’ve gone back and forth on - was the work done under cho bros or chosen ones? If it were cho bros did he have insurance ? If so the insurance company would be on the hook - good point though Josiah ! I’m sure all were factors and a detail that is up for interpretation / debate 🤓 thanks for watching and for the thoughtful comment 🙏
@@Itsnicholasle As a character, Danny really struck me as the type to always cut corners and produce shoddy work. I was of the impression that he did not maintain proper insurance like many door-to-door construction workers and handymen do in my experience. Very telling was how he audibly choked on his words after the fire investigator told him the construction company would be responsible for the damages. The shame of his blunder was physically overwhelming in that moment.
There was absolutely no one else he could blame this disaster on (but somehow, he still found a way...)
Brilliant series!!! Brilliant actors!!! Best movie I have watched in a long time!!! The story line is so real!!! They deserve all the awards!!! Looking forward to more!!!
Probably the most important video I have watched in days because now the narrative is so personal to me and my identity.
Beef was really amazing but your review and analysis were deeply moving and intelligent. Wow. I need to listen to you more.
Thank you so much! I’m humbled that the is video could resonate - Beef was definitely my favourite show of the year !
Definitely a series that touches upon non duality. Excellent analysis
I really felt Danny’s pain and his tears at church ❤❤❤ beautiful.. and 🧡Ali too.
This was very powerful, especially after finishing the season yesterday. Thank you so much, your excellent analysis helped me examine my own shame as I interact with the world and people I love. Why is it so hard to just love ourselves?
What a beautiful reflection! Thank you so much for sharing. I'll certainly be quoting from this video!
Thanks Anh! Appreciate you & love the cozy vibes on your channel ! ☺️
I was so happy to come across your analysis. You really articulated the many complexities of this brilliant series.

Amazing analysis! This show definitely struck a nerve with me and I didn’t know why.

Wow thank you so much! For sure - one of my favourite series in a very long time!
Fr what a beautiful show man some of its themes are such a personal message to me
Great show. Amazing acting.
Thank you for covering it in the way it deserves. Absolutely beautifull!
(left me absolutely confused on how you have just so little followers while being one of the best in covering this topic - going to change that, even if it's just a small number)
Beef is an amazing series which has deeper meaning which was much needed for everyone
Definitely the best show I’ve watched in awhile!
Great analysis. Wondering if anyone has heard when a season 2 of Beef will come out?
Beautiful analysis 👌

This is the very message of Christianity actually. This is exactly why God didn’t want us to eat from Tree of Knowledge. You basically espoused the very core of Christianity without even knowing it using fundamental terminology.
very well worded!! investing in this vid fr
Beautiful commentry.
Really hit the nail on the head. This was excellent analysis ❤
Thank you Robin! Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! 🙏
brilliant reading of beef
Well said sir
Isn’t it obvious from the beginning that they’re alike? Why else would they get into the road rage deal and be brought together? I guess I just assumed their inability to handle rage/pain is opening scene
Loved this show and how deep it is
Fantastic video! Very well said in a short amount of time.
Thank you so much! 🙏
Awesome show wish they make a season 2!!!
🎉🎉 great deep dive. I just subbed. Loving the topics you get into on your podcasts.
