    This video is a great overview of the field. I have been a Biomed for over 16 years. I received Army in the training but know that there are many great civilian college programs out there. The key is to combine training with real experience, whether that be working as a volunteer, intern, work study, etc. Exposure to equipment is the key tool to setting yourself up to be a marketable biomedical equipment repair specialist.

    In Canada we are referred to as "Technologists". I find the many different titles can be confusing - you may also see us listed as: Clinical Engineering Technologist, Engineering Technologist, Health Care Technologist, Medical Technologist

    I'm a CBET, it's a great job but the money is in Field Service, hospitals don't pay as much, but I would still think it is a great career choice

      +BaileyForLife I am looking to switch careers from television broadcast to BMET. Do you know how I could get my foot in the door?

    • @BaileyForLife
      @BaileyForLife 8 лет назад +2

      +William Tellor If you have at least your associates degree in Electronics Technology then you have a chance at a entry level position. I would also recommend taking your certification through AAMI for Biomedical Equipment Repair. Most biomed departments want the techs certified now, that would give you a leg up.

      +BaileyForLife All of the certifications I saw on AAMI require 3 years of experience with my degree to even apply for, or did I misunderstand?

    • @BaileyForLife
      @BaileyForLife 8 лет назад

      +Jason Apun Sorry, that is correct but unless it has changed since I took the test 6 years ago, you can still take the test and it will put you in as candidate status until you have reached your experience requirement.

      +BaileyForLife I will have to look into that. Any resources/books you recommend me to study? Also, I greatly appreciate your help.

    Getting your foot in the door of a hospital you would like to someday work at can be invaluable. They will get a sense of who you are and what you are like to work with, what you bring to the field -- and you can have a chance to prove yourself as a technician and team player. The only downside is that the work would most likely not be paid -- but if there is a retirement on the horizon, it could be an excellent time to start.

    A counselor at my community college told me about this field. They have a program that trains you how to become a biomedical equipment technician. I might check it out because I don't know what to get into at all but like technology and helping others.

    I believe that many of the college programs out there (biomed programs) require an internship, so hospitals in the local area of a biomed program seem like they would be amenable to an internship. If there are no biomed college programs in your area, I would probably draft a letter stating interest in volunteering in a local hospital's department. Make sure to state your qualifications, why you wish to volunteer/intern, and how many hours a week you would be available.

    This is easily one of the best medical careers. There has been a shortage of qualified and experienced technicians and the demand is expected to rise. Check out "Better Biomed" on RUclips for more info on this career field.

    Join the Army/Air gaurd or reserve. They will send you to school, pay you for the full year of training and you only have to give them one weekend a month for four years. The D.O.D. school will familiarize you with the clinical side of things. In my expirience most employers prefered military trained techs.

    Where exactly can someone get experience with this? I have a degree in electronic systems tech, but every bmet location I apply to requires 1-2yrs experience with the bio medical equipment. Most of them even said they don't even do internships.
