When John says "everybody's high," He doesn't mean drug wise. He's referring to the high you can get from being one with nature, living in the moment, and the contentment we get from being with friends/family. That's what I take from it anyway. RIP John Denver. What a legend he was.
That may be true, but the man still really enjoyed his illicit drugs.
Or so he said. Back then smoking weed wasn't as acceptable and he likely didn't want to offend any of his fans, or is record label.
It's both.....high on life! 😊
And thats the best part of music, it gets interpreted according to the listener and in many cases the lyrics has a double meaning already known by the artist who may or may not admit thats what they meant

@@colleenross8752 I had a good office mate who saw one of his last shows. I didn't go for whatever reason. I'd been hearing his cassettes since I was a tyke in the backseat in the 70s.
This song always brings tears to my eyes. When I was 27, I moved to the redwood forests of Northern California, and my experience was exactly what is described here. The world falls away when I'm up in those woods, when the stars I'd never seen before in a life lived in the city come out. The fog dancing between the trees, the hills so dark green, the waterfalls, the rocks, the moss lining the paths. The cathedral of redwood stretching up into the sky, and the hymns sung by those whispering branches. I miss it so much; I left my soul up there and more than anything, I want to return.
I hope you do someday. If not go there in your imagination.
Love the way you appreciate lyrics, and all genres. When songs can be turned into books of lyrics/poems, they are artists not only musicians.

His and James Taylor voices are so much alike. Not that they sound anything like each other. The only words I can think of to explain it is that their voices are pure and honest.
You GOTTA listen to "Calypso", and one I know you'll love....its fast paced and catchy, is called "Thank God I'm a Country Boy"
The line about raining fire in the sky comes from he and his friends camping out and watching a meteor shower. I love the line about the serenity of a clear blue mountain lake, also "You know he'd be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly". John Denver was special, and I always felt that he was a kindred spirit for sure. I'm quite sure that they were smoking weed, but were also just high on the experience. Smoking weed wasn't as acceptable back then, and was still illegal, so he likely downplayed it to satisfy his record label

Leaving on a Jet Plane is a fantastic, tender song about leaving behind his girlfriend. At the time the Viet Nam war was going on. 500,000 young men were sent to war (many drafted) and 50,000 men died. This song tore peoples' hearts apart.

John Denver is my go to when I’m stressed or just fed up. I just say “play John Denver”, close my eyes and chill. A poet. A dreamer. Miss him.
This is my favorite John Denver song!!! I have a memory of being all the way up top in Madison Square Garden for a benefit concert in the 70s. He sang this song, and I swear to God, he had us tough New Yorkers weepy every time he hit those high notes. He took us up to the top of those mountains, took us to Heaven ✌️🎶
As someone who was born and raised in Colorado, this song will alway have a place in my heart. Unfortunately I had to move out of Colorado (to expensive to live) to Ohio, but this song always takes me back to my home state. Yes and No about the Mary Jane at the end, yes I believe that at the end of the song is talking about it, but it was ode too how much he loved Colorado since moving here. And fun fact: Rocky Mountain High is one of Colorado Official state song.
Colorado has about 58 14ers (over 14,000 feet) and I always think when he say that line about Silver Clouds below, he on top of one of those 14ers. Colorado has most beautiful Sunrises and Sunset I have seen, some of the sky will have yellows, reds, blue, orange and some purple in them, and sky in Colorado are so blue.
And hope someday you will be able to visit Colorado and enjoy the beauty of nature, I like to suggest is to find a lake in the mountains and just sit and listen to the birds you won't be disappointed.
exact opposite story, grew up in Indiana, parents took us on a trip to Colorado when I was 7. Took too many decades but finally moved from Indiana to Colorado. Yes, it is expensive, but to me, it's worth it. Seeing the mountains every day and ability to just disappear into nature is worth it for me.

As for "seeing clouds from above"... those same Rocky Mountains stretch all the way up through Alberta and British Columbia in Canada (I live in Alberta), and I've seen that more times than I can count... you just have to go skiing... you don't even have to hike/climb... just hop on the chairlift and hop off at the top... then take a few deep breaths, thank fate, the Lord, what/who ever... and get ready for the downhill rush. lol.✌🏼🍁👋🏼

You want the full Rocky Mountain experience, head on up... higher.. north... come see the world, and some of God's best work, in that li'l place they call Canada. lol.
That said, when I was 18, I headed to Colorado, up into the mountains, to a place(now burned down and gone), called "Caribou Ranch Recording Studio", to study recording engineering. and, the term "take your breath away"?... yup... just try and do a quick jog from the cabins to the barn(studio), and you are breathless.. lol... oxygen seriously tapers off at those altitudes.☮🇨🇦🇺🇸
For Central Illinois and then high school I played basketball. I moved to Denver and tried to play just one quarter and I had to tap out no oxygen.

Several radio stations wouldn't play this one, thinking he was indeed talking about drug use. But it wasn't, it was about getting high on the beauty of nature, and the line "fire in the sky" described a meteor shower he and his friends observed one night. When John testified in front of a Senate Committee on censorship, he used this song as an example. He talked about it being banned and stated; "This was obviously done by people who had never seen or been to the Rocky Mountains and also had never experienced the elation, the celebration of life, or the joy in living that one feels when he observes something as wondrous as the Perseides meteor shower, on a moonless and cloudless night, when there are so many stars that you have a shadow from the starlight, and you're out camping with your friends, your best friends, and introducing them to one of nature's most spectacular light shows for the very first time." You should definitely check out more of his songs, he had many great songs. "Annie's Song", to his wife after they had an argument. "Calypso", talking about Jacques Cousteau and his mission. "Sunshine On My Shoulders", again the simple pleasure of nature. "Back Home Again", a lovely song about the feeling of returning home after being away. "Thank God I'm A Country Boy", a happy fun little song with a great fiddle. And those are just a few of the top of my head.
Every song tells a story ! He doesn't just write songs, he writes emotions !

I was visiting a friend in Colorado and we went up to Pike's Peak and when you are going up the road to get there you go through the clouds and out the other end. There is also something called the tree line. Once you pass a certain altitude the air is so thin trees can't grow. And as you get closer to that point the trees get smaller and smaller. And yes, once you are at the top you see the clouds below you, kind of like when you are in an airplane above the clouds. I have been to Colorado and I understand why John Denver fell in love with the place.

There is a certain feeling you get when you are in the mountains and there isn't anyone else around. John Denver captured that feeling very well. It is the peace, the joy of seeing new things, listening to nature, and none of it involves a computer or a phone, no cars, no TV, none of the stuff that adds stress to every day for most people.
How many, many times I've heard this song - yet I 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘀. (Loved your appreciation of its utter beauty. ♡)
In rocky mountain high he talks about himself his son being born living and growing as a person in the beautiful mountains then the mountains talking to his soul and finally being with friends around the campfire and everybody's high...he wasn't a tea toddler as everyone pegged him as that's why he was such an influence and inspiration to music RIP John ❤️❤️❤️

If you've ever been in the Colorado Rocky's, you'll get what this song is about! I remember my husband and I stayed up in the mountains at a Lodge in Estes Park about 21 miles up the mountains, and we drove up the mountain from our lodge about a mile and a half into a snow storm, the clouds were gray. We got out of our truck and looked down over a ledge at our lodge and the sun was shining down on the lodge. Two different worlds, I love the Rocky Mountains!
I saw him in concert in 1986 in a very small intimate setting And for whatever reason I cried from the time he walked on to the stage until the time he walked off the stage , That's what it was like being in his presence !

The man could tell a story. Whenever I hear his music, it takes me to the world that he is singing about. The visuals are so real and I feel like I am there. Even a country boy like John Denver got a little high.
The fun thing about camping, hiking and canoeing is that planning your pack i.e. food and equipment. Shon, food will never taste as good as when you are camping.
Oh, there's no hidden meaning😉! One way or another, you step one foot on the top of Mount Evans and you somehow get high as a kite...either from the effects of thinner air or from the hit you just took or from the ONE shot of tequila that you were sure wouldn't affect you, only to fall on your face when getting out of the car...or just from the staggering beauty that surrounds you. I was a flatlander from Nebraska when my family moved to Denver when I was 11 - I'm 78 now -- and I still get weepy when I hear this song.

I have ridden my motorcycle through Eastern Tennessee and have literally ridden through clouds, pulled over in a clear spot, looked down and you couldn't see the ground for the clouds! It's so amazing!!

I have experienced that when I was 18 years old I moved to Denver and we used to go up into the mountains and just play just be free. Then we had to go back down to the city, but the water is beautiful. The sound the water makes is beautiful Stood in those streams. There’s so cool from melting snow
I'll never forget my 1st sight of the Rockies, I was only in first grade (now 56) they looked like a big pile of clouds on the horizon. Every time I see clouds like that I remember.

Perhaps I'm just naive, but as a 70-something y.o., I never interpreted Rocky Mountain "high" to mean anything but the natural high one can feel being out in nature. I've lived my entire life in Oregon and consider it God's country. I can't imagine the beauty of Colorado.
His music and the way he tells a story and paints pictures in his lyrics and his pure voice are very much missed.

John Denver is in a class by himself in my opinion, although artists of this era didn’t have access to or need “musical enhancements”. Pure talent, pure transparency.
He was a "born again Christian" and a lot of his songs have religious undertones if you are paying attention, they are very spiritual.

I was born in 1970. So I was technically there. But too young to appreciate it yet.
I remember in 8th grade my buddy had this beat-up mini pool table in his basement and the only thing we had to listen to while playing was his dad's ancient 8 track tapes... so we listened to them... for whatever reason this was our fav and we listened to it endlessly... haven't thought of those good times in years.. so thx for this video!
When the clouds are below you, we call it “undercast” as opposed to “overcast”. For the record, you can drive up a lot of mountains like Mt Washington in New Hampshire and look down on the clouds. It’s AMAZING ❤

If you have ever been to Rocky Mountain National Park you know what he’s singing about. It’s breathtaking and the serotonin release from being in nature gives you a bit of a high.

I love John Denver and this song is one of my all time favs!! I grew up in the New Mexico Rockies and spent half my life there going camping in the Colorado Rockies as well and now the other half of my life I have spent in the Canadian Rockies in Alberta. I can totally relate to this song and the beauty of the mountains is so special to me. Thanks Shon!! There are some really great documentaries with John Denver and also biographical videos of his life in the Rockies and his music. Be sure and check them out, it is so worth it.
6:29 I used to hike and canoe. Went to the BWCA a few times. My hiking days are long past because of physical and mental changes.

I wonder if John had Silverton, CO in mind when he wrote this song. I went there for the first time a few weeks ago and you can definitely look down at the top of the clouds. The most beautiful place I've ever seen.

you should check out the Blue Ridge Mountain highway. it's a lot closer to where you are, but you drive along and look down on the tops of clouds.

Yeah, John Denver was a real one. The song just makes me cry for no reason. I love it. As to the high reference around the campfire, I don't think it's what you were thinking, back in John's day, and knowing the man a little, getting high probably meant beers and high spirits with friends.
