In this video we visit the capitol of The Netherlands: AMSTERDAM.
The go through I share with you in this video, through Amsterdam, is a leg, a part of a route called the Standing Mast route. Others call it the The Mast Up Route.
That route, follows rivers and canal and runs from the South-West of the Netherlands to the Nort-East.
So, boaters who want to go the South-West of the Netherlands or to the Nort-East AND do not want or are not able to go via the nasty North Sea AND have an air draft of more then 4, 5, 6 meter or higher can, follow this route AND all bridges will open up.

Since Lady Liselot has an minimum air draft of 5.3m with the mast down,
I always follow this Standing Mast Route, but actualy never mentioned it.

Waarom ik alles in het Engels doe?
Omdat ik video's kijk van Fransen, Denen, Noren, Spanjaarden, Portugezen, Duitsers én heel veel Engelstaligen die allemaal Engels lullen en ook bootjesmensen / liveaboards zijn. Want alleen dan kan je je ervaring wereldwijd delen. En wat blijkt? Mijn video's worden in 127 landen bekeken (zie S03/E01 voor de lijst). Hoi Captain. I have just discovered your channel and am enjoying your journeys very much. The ‘mast-up’ route is especially great for me as I travelled from Kempers Jachthaven (Westeinderplassen) through to Dukra Jachthaven at Zaandam in my British Widebeam boat. I did this in March 31st 2020 just before Covid ruined all of my plans - but thats another story. The trip through Amsterdam and the subsequent time spent exploring (lockdowns permitting) was fantastic - one day I will return.

Looks like you and I were neighbors in Amsterdam, I lived in the Hoofdorpplein area which from the video is about where you lived. Did a lot of sailing op de Nieuwe Meer. Been in USA for over 50 years now

@@MVLadyLiselot Ik beschouw mezelf niet als abnormaal maar dat terzijde. Ik vond het ook wel geinig om een keer de route bij daglicht te zien. Overigens nog één kleine correctie: Het konvooi voor zeilers vanaf de Houthaven (Westerkanaal) richting Nieuwe Meer (Noord naar Zuid) vertrekt niet om 00:00 maar om 02:00 uur (lokale tijd). Dan opent de spoorbrug die je noemt om het konvooi van zuid naar noord door te laten en aansluitend vaart het zooitje dan richting Nieuwe Meer. Het konvooi vanaf Nieuwe Meer naar het IJ vertrekt wel om 00:00, dan opent daar de spporbrug, als de trein vanaf Amsterdam zuid daar voorbij is. Je kunt voor de grap eens een keertje in het hoogseizoen 'snachts mee varen met de zeilers. Vooral als zich veel bootjes aangemeld hebben en niet iedereen zijn vaartuigje onder controle heeft. "Ken je Lachuhh"
I'm enjoying this as Amsterdam is my birthplace which I left in June 1955! I've been back to "holland" many times since then but always tried to find time to explore the places of my childhood. Most of my visits were with Signaal in Hengelo, KMS in Vlissingen and Den Hague. Cheers

Jarenlang op de Legmeerstraat gewoond. Was altijd even gokken welke brug te kiezen als je 's avonds om een uur of één met je fietsje uit de stad kwam. Mooie beelden👍

Amsterdam is een fijne stad, Manuel. Jammer dat je niet zoals bij Haarlem in de stad kunt aanmeren (voor schepen zoals Lady Liselot) en het dus vooral een doorvaart is, maar die sfeer is al bijzonder. Iedere keer opnieuw.

OOo so nice👌I just love it. Looks like that me and my whife will rent one of those canalboat nxt year and it will be around Amsterdam for sure. We think it is a bit cheeper to rent rather then to take our 50 footer from Denmarkn and down to the “lowland”☺️

Te grappig, ik heb jaren bij Dirkie op Sloterkade gewerkt, toen bestond Cafe Vocht nog, toen gesloten en daarna was Muralto vaste stamcafeetje.
Mijn vriendinnetje (en later moeder van de kids) woonde daar tussen 1997 en 2002.
Dag Henk, je noemde dat de brugwachters soms haasje-over werken en dat een brugwachter vooruit moest fietsen. Is daar een lijstje van zodat we er idd rekening mee kunnen houden? Thx!
Hallo Simon, ik weet niet of daar een lijst van is. Vaak langs varen en dan weet je het. In Haarlem gebeurt het dus, en deels in Amsterdam. Vanaf de Wiegbrug is de wisseling van de wacht, zo weet ik inmiddels. Toen ik uit de sluis naar het Noorden voer, heb ik een keer gevraagd "Tot hoever ga je mee?" "Tot de Wieg" was het antwoord. Ik herinner het me nog, omdat ik dacht "Tot de Wieg?" hahaha De Wiegbrug dus.
Ey Buur, leuk je filmpjes weer!! Vroeg me af, wannee beslis je op 1 motor te baren en wanneer op 2? Zag dat je tussentijds wisselt..
Buurman. Laten we zeggen: 1 motor levert bij 1500 RPM een snelheid van 10km/h. 2 motoren leveren bij een snelheid van 1350 RPM een snelheid van 10km/h, maar bij 2 motoren heb je 200% verbruik en bij 1 motor 100% (oké , iets meer rpm, dus 115%). 2 motoren op 1500 RPM levert een snelheid om van 12km/h en 2x verbruik. Ik gebruik de 2 motoren voornamelijk als ik moet maneuvreren, als ik stroom tegen heb, of ergens op tijd wil zijn (en de golfslag terplekke geen probleem vormt), anders schakel ik 1 motor uit. De keerkoppeling is daar voor gemaakt, en wordt gewoon gekoeld, dus er loopt niet warm. (Technisch dingetje). Eigenlijk moet je beide motoren evenveel uren laten draaien. De bakboordmotor heeft ook nog een 24v dynamo om de accubank op te laden, dus als ik met bakboord vaar, hoef ik later niet de generator te starten om te koken bv.

Hi, I am considering doing the northern part (From Harlingen) of the route this summer. I am looking for for max with for the boat. I am sailing a small catamaran, but it is 6,4 m wide. I was hoping you could confirm that the route is wide enough :)?
Hey Andreas, I am 4,35m wide, so with 1m on both sides I am as wide as you are. The smaller barges in NL are about 5,5m or 6m wide. I have never done The Northern part bur, but, but from all the bridges I have seen In The Netherlands, most of them are (at least) 8m wide.
Nice cruising Henk. How much fuel is consumed on a day like that? Is it expensive?
Hi Mark, since I most of the time run only 1 engine (the 2nd adds only 25% speed AND 100% fuel burn) it's 10 liter per hour, so app 1 liter per km. Pricing at that time was € 2.17 per liter. At this moment (01-2023) prices are € 1,70 per liter.

Why do the sailboats have to wait until midnight and you can go during daytime? Are there some bridges that only open in the night?
The specific trainbridge I mention as first barrier AND the last bridge after the lock will only open at night, because of traffic jam avoidance on both cars (last bridge - 7.0m) and trains (first - 6.0m). That's why I lower the mast on both bridges.

No idea. I think that with every new bridge they design a new one. All of them have one thing in common though: It can open.

Espacially in summertime a very nice trip when it is cosy in town and busy at the terrasses and balconies.
Thanx for sharing. As you see in the video we used to live next to the canal at the Sloterkade. In summer we always enjoyed the convoy at night. We often grab a drink and sat down on the quay. took just a couple of minutes but the bell of the bridge warned us upfront. ;-)

I guess you are right, there is no engine in these floating houses and one cannot sail with it. The translation house boats is too much of an 1:1 translation from the Dutch word Woonboot.
Can you use autopilot in the canals?
Well. Technically you can, but the ride is only 1 hour and canals are only 40m wide, so better not.
Henk, when at school in the '50's of last century, we were taught Den Haag was your capital. When did that change?

At 4.05 you go through a bridge that has a lamppost that raises with it, what is that? Does it make a connection with the other lamppost when the bridge is down? Are they tram lines? I just thought it looked interesting, I never see a lamppost raise up with a bridge before.

Grazy. Mostly filled with sloops and small 'as long as it floats'-stuff with outboards and people interested in being on the water with alcohol.

Is there any move to centrally automate the bridge openings? Or group them to one operating spot?
Yes Phil starting season '22. It failed dramatically. The bridges did not open, did not close and the camera stream was not 100% so it was not save. No one could 100% guarantee that the moment they want to open the bridge there was no car, cyclist of pedestrian on the bridge. So they brought back the operators and everything went smooth again. "Nobody knows where it went wrong."
Als het een beetje meezit, doe ik dit jaar de staande mast route wel een paar keer met m'n zeilboot; eens zien of dat wat wordt. Nou zat ik me trouwens af te vragen (en misschien heb je dat al ergens beantwoord, maar ik ben vandaag wat lui om te gaan zoeken); hoeveel diesel verstook je nou zo gemiddeld eigenlijk? Ik heb namelijk zitten spelen met het idee om m'n zeilboot om te ruilen voor een motorboot, maar zit me dan af te vragen hoe veel meer ik dan aan diesel uitgeef :)
Wat voor motorboot wil je kopen dan? De een zegt "Oh, ik verstook 5 liter per uur", een ander meldt "Ik verstook een liter per kilometer" en weer een ander zegt, "Als ik een beetje gas geef, verstook ik 40 tot 60 liter per uur." Onmogelijk om daar op een luie zondagmiddag een getal aan te hangen.
@@MVLadyLiselot goed punt mbt de per uur/per kilometer - zat te kijken naar een boot met 2 diesels van 100pk elk, 12 meter lang - iets kleiner dan jouw boot dus, maar wel vergelijkbaar (stalen trawler-achtig ding). Ik reken zelf altijd in liters/uur, puur omdat ik dan terug kan rekenen van gemiddelde snelheid 5 knopen, bij X toeren, is Y liter per uur, dus kan ik met m'n Z liter tank een boel mijlen varen - inderdaad, niet iets voor de luie zondagmiddag :D Het was meer iets om een beetje globaal een idee te krijgen of het op te brengen is, qua diesel kosten - tenminste, op te brengen is het altijd wel, maar ik moet af en toe bij m'n vriendin wel verantwoorden waarom ik weer een pegel geld aan de boot heb uitgegeven, vandaar :D

Let me think. Every city has some streets that are 'important'. Because of shops or, go through through the city, or because of expensive houses, or because of the amount of people that live there. This all fits 'De Overtoom".
