I wasn’t aware that 3M even had a presence in Japan. They mostly just make commodities (one of their best-known products is just a piece of paper with some weak glue on it, anybody can make that), so I guess I just assumed that domestic companies were filling their niche.
The real reason it’s called 3M is that the original name was the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. (Minnesota being one of our states, it’s an American company). General Mills, Polaris, and Hormel (the makers of Spam) are some other companies from Minnesota you might be familiar with. The famous Mayo Clinic is also based there.
