  • We continue our recent career series with a round table discussion today of what it takes to build a successful BI consultancy. Particularly as the future of work continues to evolve in the face of the ongoing pandemic, you may be wondering what it might take to transition from a data analyst or data scientist position to running your own BI consulting firm?
I recently spoke with three data professionals who have successfully made that leap:
Paul Lucassen, founder of Lucassen Consulting
Rick de Groot, founder of Gorilla BI
George Mount, founder of Stringfest Analytics
We talked about a wide range of issues including: what prompted them to make that change, challenges they faced along the way, advice they would give to people looking to make a similar move, ways in which they've helped clients see their business in a completely different way, how the pandemic has affected the nature of their business, the importance of sharing within the larger data community, and predictions about where they see data analytics headed in the future.

As a consultant (without a broad network) how do you sell your services to a company? Do you find an executive members details on LinkedIn and approach the sell that way? Or do you sell services in person? etc

As a consulting offering services in a new field e.g. Paul (logistics expert) doing data in flowers; how do you quickly absorb and understand the details of that new field? Do you request for process maps, documents, research via google?
