      PJ is being a hypocrite and you don't realise it. He has an "elite" education (paying to use Oxford library and not a graduate), and will be lording over citizens if Opposition gets voted in. What makes you think you will be given privileges in his world?
      Furthermore, he is the one living in private property, driving luxury car, in fine clothes, earning high wages from telling lies on RUclips and other social media. You don't think PJ is the hypocrite?

      @@scbchong6964 Ok, the saline point u made that makes or breaks for a hypocrite is the following:
      1.living in a private property,
      2. driving luxury car,
      3. wearing fine clothes
      4. earning high wages
      5. Telling lies (that you need to pt out what they are)

      @@mindtwister1984 Don't be silly. Govt does not throw citizens in jail for owning private property, nice car, fine clothes or earning high salary.
      The issue is that citizens who are complaining and anti-PAP need to be less hypocrites. ie. blame govt for their unhappy hard life while quietly accepting all the subsidies and great lifestyle choices and freedom available.
      Also, don't you think you should give less credence to hypocrites like PJ Thum? He was a scholar and from elite family, the very attributes which Opposition supporters love to hate. Yet in your infatuation for a "anti-pap hero", you give him overblown credence. What rot.

    Enjoyed your video. Very well articulated and point were succinctly explained. I agree there are always some drawbacks and sacrifices we made for whatever policies we embraced. Does the ends justify the means? Do we sacrifice long term objectives for middle term gains?
    I guess the country did well for the last 50yrs to quickly achieve one of the highest GDP per capital income in the world. We did that at the expense of personal freedom and expression, political depth, and as you mentioned many local entrepreneurs were sidelined in favour of global capitalist.
    We paid a very heavy price for the collective good and overall national ranking. I believe Singapore has arrived for wider political perspective and discussion. More exciting, daring and innovative ideas that are not always subjected to the party whip. A more mature and diverse political landscape would definitely bring more vibrancy and ideas if we really want to compete in league of nations.

    hi dr PJ. I don’t know if you will read this, it is uncharacteristically lengthy. But can i just say, I am only a student of the sciences but I have gotten more invested into politics after watching your videos. I think it is because no matter how you have been treated by establishment, or the attention you’ve received both good and bad, you are at core a historian, in my opinion the most pure of the humanities. I am able to draw a parallel that history is to law what physics is to engineering. Tell the story as it is, provide the requisite knowledge in full, unfettered form. When either side, opposition or ruling paints their own narrative to us, while conveniently ignoring each other’s challenges in trying to influence us, that to me is an insult upon the reasonable man’s intellect. We are organisms reacting to stimulus - heat moves spontaneously in response to a temperature differential. By telling the story as it is, you also show the PAP’s challenges in response to problems they faced instead of a simply resorting to anecdotal evidence of the “common man” as some of the opposition members that incidentally I notice you’ve interviewed. Consequently, telling the story from all narratives(as good history seeks toachieve) likewise also what the opposition is effectively addressing. You have my respect and will form a good role model, I do hope you will continue to maintain this standard of integrity. I do not mind the snarky anti-establishment undertones given how you’ve been treated as it seems fair, I do not think the average joe would form premature opinions solely based on that. Keep telling your story from the new narratif, which really is the old narrative of all narratives - that of mother history.

    • @NewNaratif
      @NewNaratif  4 года назад +6

      Thanks for the comment. To answer your second point first, it's fundamentally a very emotive issue for older Singaporeans because it represents our savings from an entire lifetime of work. So imagine working your whole life, with your salary withheld by the government, only to be told as you reach retirement age that they won't give it all back to you. Older Singaporeans also easily remember a time when your CPF was given entirely back to you at retirement age. It's unfair for the goalposts to shift, especially just when you are reaching the end of your working life. For your question, though, I'm hesitant to go into detail about CPF because it is incredibly complicated. There are so many different schemes and plans and outcomes, not all of which are bad. It's difficult to explain easily. That's why I prefer to focus on the broader principles - lack of transparency, lack of accountability, lack of input into political decisions - rather than the minutiae. That's a neverending rabbit hole. I suppose I could talk about the broader history of the CPF in a future episode? Let me think about it. Thanks for the feedback!

    • @scbchong6964
      @scbchong6964 4 года назад

      PJ is being deceptive and lying.
      re: 'salary withheld by govt'. This is incorrect. All citizens also have their take home pay to save a portion of. How irresponsible to go through adult working life without saving and investing?
      re: 'won't give it all back to you'. Wrong. At 55 citizens can withdraw a large sum. They can choose how much to leave inside CPF to earn interest and then after 65, get paid a monthly sum until death. There is also your personal savings for you to use.
      re: 'unfair for goalposts to shift'. PJ demands that govt do not adapt to the world economy. That is unsustainable and robbing the future. Your generation. The CPF interest rates and the v.1 lumpsum withdrawal had to stop in the late 80s because citizens were less productive than their inflated wages.
      PJ is trying to avoid the discussion about how the younger generation of citizens like you will be broke, if the older generation had been allowed to enjoy unsustainable interest rates and lumpsum withdrawals. PJ is very hesitant to draw conclusion that it is mostly citizens' personal responsibility to adapt, and family/community obligation to have personal savings too.
      What is his agenda for trying to shame and embarrass PAP govt constantly?

      Wrong. The average citizen pays very little income tax or property tax. GST is everyone pays and costs more if you have expensive lifestyle.
      As for HDB, the land cost includes the cost of getting the surrounding infrastructure to liveable, usuable state ie. roads, utilities, leisure spots, car parks, public transport, etc. Opposition govt builds only the standing HDB block in middle of jungle, you want to buy?

    1. Every country tries to attract foreign workers to fill in labor gaps, not just Singapore. In order to take your claims seriously, you would have to cite data showing SG's migrant laborers suffer injuries/deaths at higher rates than should otherwise occur.
    2. You mention SG's status as a port allowing opium and drugs. But every Asian port allowed--or was forced to allow--such trade by European colonizers, probably due to the high margins and high demand of such products. What is remarkable about SG is that its police force managed to drive out the drug mafia, which neither USA nor Hong Kong has accomplished.
    3. Re: foreign media funding, you correctly identify the exploitation potential by foreign capital but fail to apply the same analysis to the media issue. (To be clear, I am NOT making any statement about how New Naratif is funded.) Though not as educated as you, I have noticed that historically, when coups occur, a top objective is to take over the radio/TV stations and distribute biased propaganda. This dynamic seems to indicate that ruling parties everywhere are right to be concerned about bias or potential distortions in their media.
    4. Every single country desires FDI (foreign direct investment), not just Singapore. What is remarkable about SG is that it has managed not only to attract FDI, but has actually abandoned key elements of Western finance (such as M1, M2, etc.) and paved its own way. Today, no reasonable person believes MAS has failed to consider the needs of all Singaporeans, and PM Lee delivered a recent speech promising to "leave no Singaporean behind."
    5. An astute viewer will notice that most of your complaints re: lack of due process relate to the turbulent 1960s. At the time, almost every single country in the world was caught between USA's and Soviet Union's battle for influence. We now know SG chose wisely. Whereas Indonesia's Suharto--also USA-backed--may have been responsible for allowing numerous murders of socialists/Communists, LKY famously said he never killed anyone--he only fined or imprisoned them. IMHO, we must consider LKY's actions in the context of events in Vietnam and Indonesia, not just SG.
    6. Again, I am not as educated as you, but I could only watch the first 13 minutes of the video before losing interest. Too much is taken out of context. Though your knowledge of SG history is tremendous and superior to mine, you may want to study the history of other SE Asian countries and ask why SG continues to be the most successful country in SE Asia in terms of general social welfare--at least as of 2020. (June 2020)

    Singapore must be wary of the diplomatic relation with United States of America. The same can be said of other super powers in order to remain truly non-aligned and neutral.
    However, diplomatic relation with USA has to be more worrying because this is the only superpower who will not hesitate to put Singapore on America's hot plate to choose between being an ally of USA or being an ally of China.
    Singapore will be labelled an unfriendly nation to USA as long as Singapore chooses either being an ally of China or even staying neutral.

    You cannot say that "we still never developed a viable domestic capitalist entrepreneurial class as was the case in the rest of developed Asia (19:53)" when 2/3 of employment in Singapore is being generated by SMEs contributing up to $200b out of $360b of GDP. Or do GLCs like Temasek, Sembcorp, Keppel not count as your definition of domestic capitalist entrepreneurs?

    • @NewNaratif
      @NewNaratif  4 года назад +5

      Hi, thanks for your comment. SMEs provide roughly similar shares of employment and output in developed countries. The question of whether they are a significant capitalist entrepreneurial class depends on how important and competitive they are in the global arena. Compare, for example, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Scandinavia, etc. and their domestic capitalist class. Singapore's state-owned enterprises (or "GLCs" as we call them) are generally not successful enough to compete with this class. In some specific cases, like SIA or DBS or Sembcorp, yes; but overall, our local enterprises are too narrow, or bureaucratic, or outdated, or inefficient, to form significant industrial or economic capacity compared to the other countries above. - PJ

    • @NewNaratif
      @NewNaratif  4 года назад +2

      You have to keep in mind also I'm making a political economy argument (which is one general theme of my videos), and so it's also about the political consequences of the trade-offs that are inherent in our policies. So one question to ask, for example, might be, can Singapore's domestic capitalist class provide sufficient leverage to improve Singapore's negotiating position with international capital? - PJ

    • @recharging2002
      @recharging2002 4 года назад

      @@NewNaratif I am honoured to have elicited the longest response here.
      Two even.
      In your list above, our small domestic population places us less than half the size of the smallest administrative unit, i.e. Denmark. I struggle to imagine a Singapore able to negotiate on equal terms with international capital in the way you imagine. I cited the above GLCs because I see them as successful in their own right - telecomms, defence, oil rigs - here we are quite certainly playing amongst the big boys, which given our small population, makes us punch above our weight. These industries also typically require state backing in order to bargain.
      Since you appear to be inherently averse to government control, non-government entrepreneurial developments which place us on the map would include the likes of Far East Organisation, Wilmar, Grab, Razer (should I mention Hyflux, Creative?),
      You set a tough order to fulfill. Domestic, but cannot be related to establishment. We have a domestic cohort of ~40,000 live births per year. How large should the entrepreneurial class be, if the best have already been skimmed off by MOE before the age of 12? How should the non-entrepreneurial class be organised, since the number of local jobs created outpaces the birth-rate?
      I would also make a strong argument for pro-natalist policies. Everyone is interested in the economy, but no-one, government or personally, wants to put a wager on the Singaporean core.
