There is an official variant for 2 player which works really well. Basically is less workers and tiles, each round each player selects three actions, leaving one unused per round.

If the Captain phase is the only mandatory action, can a player, for instance, in the Mayor phase, refuse to take colonists? This becomes important when a player wants to either force the end of the game, or wants to extend the game.

Thanks . Some of the older games still cannot be matched with newer games. We live in an Era of quantity but quality as a ratio has deteriorated imho
