it's not where the samples come from that matters but what you do with them. J Dilla made sampling and cutting beats into an artform, nobody can beat him on that. I'm a jazz guitarist but my playing is really influenced by this guy. i love this track!
cavaleer I heard "Get dis Money" on office space movie, then bought that album...then I learned he was the man behind tribe albums, DE LA albums, common etc. Then I realized I was in love with his production more than the groups he laid beats for
U do realise this is a sample of "giant steps" by wes montgomery right? Id describe this as an interpolation. He took 4 bars of a guitar solo that goes for 100s of bars
If I'm sure this is Joe pass, giant steps!!!! On his solo guitar album called virtuoso 2. He's amazing. Love this music and love the feeling of hearing a song that you like being sampled in another song that you like. Amazing.
there is a sample from miles davis too! the track is named fantasy and its awesome too, i discovered this beat in comments in the joe pass video ^^ amazing track
Man, this would’ve been a great beat with just the Joe Pass guitar sample and the drum loop, but Dilla added so many other samples throughout like the UFO sample and the “Yeah” that it really elevates this one to perfection. His ear for blending samples was amazing
Between J Dilla’s mastery and when q tip does his smooth shit over top this song is just silk. J Dilla beats and really all Tribes verses and sound in general transcended their times
i remember ridin around jammin this tune hard when it came out..."mos def, outkast, led zepplin, and biggie"...............rip j dilla, a gift of great music givin to us
ESG sample totally compliments the drums, guitar and rest of track. In the hands of a less talented producer this would’ve been a jumbled mess. RIP Dilla
the beat is just so unique and untouchable got that dreary day yet everything is all good it s peaceful everything is going ur way feel j dilla is da man
man I was in a haze when this came out. Had bought this on the release and barely played it. pulled it out a month ago and this album is incredible. gonna start playing instrumentals from it during my classes
Dope Dilla face sticker on my back windshield rollin' around Detroit showing respect like I'm spose to. Dilla will always be amongst Motown's finest! Rest In Beats
I guess Dilla was so good, he graduated from Earth and God was like, “we need you to make beats up here now”. RIP D. You’ll always be remembered through the beauty of your music 🙏🏻✌🏻
dang it's literaly almost a year since I first heard this... I remember back in late january or early february my brother was looking up some video of robert glasper and some how ended up on here. I remember how anxious I was when I heard this... and through out the months, march, april, may... all the way to august.. (mostly in march to may) I'd always remember to take my ear phones (once headphones) to teh library, then would chuck this beat on while I was drawing or doing something like that... and ofcourse the drawings weren't great but Iremember myself improving bit by bit everytime I did it, getting mentored and helped out by a dude called Fleja. I'd play a bunch of j dilla beats and then I started listening to mos def beats too.. Respirations... but any way I jsut realised how nostalgic all that feels, despite it being 11 months since... It was actually because of this song and Life, I started getting into this... I honestly felt like a hobo in the sense of my taste because THis is one of my favourites.. and I honestly can't remember life b4 I even heard this.. 1:57:01 pmm 7th January 2019

I'm losing my mind at all the little things. The fact that he kept the air in the hi hats so that they'd give the vinyl noise, yet he somehow chopped the kick and SEVERAL snares cleanly enough from that drum break AND THEN SEQUENCED IT OPEN ENOUGH that it still sounds like it was played live. The fact that that is HIS BASSLINE. The vocal sample chops. The fact that he HEARD THIS from the source material. THIS. My guy heard those chords in that Joe pass rendition of giant steps and said, "nah, fam. Make it FASTER. Put some space age synth sound effect over it. Play a funky bass line that DOESN'T hit on the one." I can't even get past the drum sequencing. Like, by my count, there's AT LEAST three different snare chops if we're counting the ghost notes. His ability to layer other samples and where it still sounds like it came from the break, but "dillafied." And the craziest part? Dilla's discography has TONS of beats like this, where the deeper you go into them, the more you see just how insane the amount of work Jay dee put into these joints is. Needless to say, Dilla was a frickin GOD on that there MPC. My dude is like Steph friggin curry. Everyone else is shooting turnaround fades from the mid post, and Dilla comes in and says, "fuck it, I'm pulling up from 30, SWISHING IT, and I'm gonna defy physics so often that EVERYONE is gonna have to learn to do what I do." Some of them are trash but yeah I agree not problem with it.

this instrumental is fire. J Dilla was a composer.
