I was in Japan for 2 weeks, I spent 10 days in Tokyo and 4 in Kyoto. After the first week, I was super home sick and not sure why I decided to come. When I got back from Kyoto and spent my last few days in Tokyo, I didn't want to leave. The random adventures I went on lead me to random friendships I made on my trip. I'll never forget it and I'll be back next year. If I didn't have a daughter to take care of in the US, I'd find a way to live here 100%. Great country with great people!

We do the indoor shoes thing in Canada. At school up to highschool you had to have indoor shoes, and at my commercial gym in the winter they'd even make you take your boots off at the door. It goes without mentioning that I've never worn shoes inside somebody's house. Japan has immaculate street cleanliness but I'd say the USA is one of the only western places that doesn't observe a lot of the same cleanliness practices.

Indoor shoes are definitly a thing in Finland also. You are required to have seperate indoor shoes for gyms and other sport related premises. We never use shoes that have been worn outside at home. We leave the dirty shoes at a designated spot when you enter a home, in a very similiar manner to Japanese. It’s considered rude to enter with outdoor shoes inside a home.

The only logical reason I can surmise why weed is still illegal in Japan is that they simply don't want to allow unproductive citizens to exist in society. If people stopped showing up to work 12+ hour days every day, their economy would collapse in a month.

      I am from USA! ❤
In our house (my husband and I) we take shoes off either outside, or in the porch room area.
Our house may get busy or cluttered sometimes but there aren’t germs from public bathrooms or anything on the floor and that’s important to us.
We like to sit and stretch and hang out to do SO many things whether it’s folding laundry, sitting at each others feet to give a quick massage, showing each other a new gadget.. blah blah blah ..
We are NOT the norm in US… it’s unfortunate… to the point when we have guests over we feel bad for asking them to take off their shoes and never making them feel bad even if it is something we do to feel safe and clean.
Again we are not overly clean tidy wise but my husband and I both like what kind of germs the floors from public spaces brings. Dirt too!! But I care way more about the Germans (just think how many people use a few public restrooms every day and then walk infrequently my of their couch where their family gathers around for a few minutes end of the night .. ewwww
      ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Watching from Europe complaining about having to have a separate pair of shoes to use in the gym is actually insane to me haha. Not sure if it's disallowed explicitly to go to the gym with your dirty shoes, but I don't know anybody who would do that. What do the kids in the US do in their gym class? Don't they use separate shoes for indoor activities?

    • @jooooohn401

I did a food tour in Japan in Osaka with a lovely local and he went into detail about just how slow it takes to get things done in Japan.
You would think with how technological they are things would be digital but in fact all of their paper work is done manually! It was his biggest complaint because things are just done too damn slow. He even went into why China is going to be very far ahead of them if not already.
And I hate to say it but Japan has become very poor. I’m not saying it’s going to turn into another Thailand but I think it’s pretty much going to be turned into a full tourist destination for its economic support and won’t be able to survive without it.

I left the Navy in 2015 and I'm STILL am trying to get back. Japan is the new America.... let me explain ... everyone wants to see it, experience it, be in it and a good percentage are WANTING to stay for an extended period and end up staying longer than expected. You don't have to deal with Americans polarizing every little political or racial thing, people treat you like a freaking KING/QUEEN. Watching people half jog to grab ketchup I asked for at McDonalds in Okinawa F**ked me UP.... like bro, why is she running.... "Sumimasen, don't run please, lol" Its a level of treatment you might ONLY get in Japan but that's WHO THEY ARE and they take pride in that shit.... I love them for it.

About the shoes in the gym thing: here in germany it is forbidden to wear outdoor shoes in the gym too

  • @Hallvard0
    @Hallvard0 28 дней назад

Its just a difference in culture. Here in Sweden it is somewhat similar, we are also more collective and generally will act the same in the sense of politeness. Also funny (maybe coincidence?) we also have indoor shoes especially for things like gyms, its to keep dirt out. For the yoga mat, I assume it's a little like even inside there will be some acceptable dirt on the floor but you don't want that on the mat itself.

  • @straightfacedgaming

I spent a year studying abroad in Japan, and although I cannot give a specific example, I totally understand your point about the gym shoes situation. There were moments where I just didn't understand the logic behind some of the rules, it felt really unnecessary and for no ones real benefit.

14:05 - I’m asian canadian so I grew up, born and raised in canada but just in asian culture, we all like to keep it clean. The reason why you wear indoor shoes is to keep it separate from the outdoor shoes, however, when you walk around in the indoor shoes. It can be dirty again around the gym. When you take off your indoor shoes for the mat to stretch, it leaves no stains from walking around inside as well. It’s an asian thing. Happens in china and Korea.

Born & raised in Toronto and was in Japan last year, honestly it's really clean and modern and has its exciting parts but I found it a tad boring. Also it was full of lots of Western tourists that seemed to just ruin everything, we tried to go to the spots for locals and what not but it seemed at those spots they didn't want to have too many foreigners and even then most younger Japanese people seemed very to themselves. The only ones that were kind of interesting were the young high school kids at shrines and castles that wanted to speak English and take photos with you as well as the 50+ year old men on the train line that wanted to practice their English in Osaka.
Granted, I don't do the cheapest possible options when I travel like Connor but when I went to Vietnam I found it way more exciting, authentic, invigorating with just as good, if not more beautiful scenery and things weren't so overly commercialized and westernized to where a place loses it's uniqueness.

Man, loved this podcast. I love Japan and all but yea, so many guidelines (and unspoken guidelines) I had a DOD contract with Japan and Northrop and had a company in Minato. After 3 years there we had to pull out. I loved the people and time I had there but the work culture was killing us lol. I tried to hold out but it just wasn't viable. Luckily the ones under our contract (Japanese Citizens) were able to get a Fed/JSDF contract and stayed employed while us, US employees had to pull out and lose our residency in the end. But at that time it was a good time. I would love to move to Japan to make a life and not focus on working and having a secondary income from the US but that's down the line. Yo Conner i have something to tell you bud, and i have full confidence in it too! You have full blown ADHD, congratulations!
Im double diagnosed and run tiny awareness campaigns about adult ADHD here in Egypt. Very well informed about the subject and also a sufferer of it. Having binged your series three times in one week (a symptom called hyperfixation by the way) - and noticed all the signs in you - impulsivity, chronic lateness to the point of becoming identity tied, rambling and losing train of thought, a “doer not a planner” - yeah man
You got Adhd. Not sure if thst affects you in any way but yeah! Thought id let you know :) its only an issue if it hurts your life and you seem to be doing great as of recent. Take care

Also the severe dislike of desk jobs, routine, boringness and authority. Ever wonder why “allll these people can just do it day in day out” but not you? Yeah :) ADHD is not just attention related. It is very much an emotion disregulation disorder. It is very much a time-awareness based disorder. Its very much a routine and self regulation disorder.
Just thought it would be maybe helpful in getting to know ones self further to let you know my thoughts on the things iv noticed in your habits parasocially through youtube lol. Cheers!!

I worked at a law firm during summer in law school and the
firm represented a Japanese auto manufacturer and I was told to research a motion (request for court/judge) to prevent (to bar) the expert witness - a former engineer of the Japanese auto manufacturer - from testifying for the plaintiff (someone claiming injury due to lack of enough safety features in car to prevent injuries despite car accident). The engineer had previously signed a confidentiality agreement when he got the job with Japanese auto manufacturer. What was remarkable was the agreement was a pledge to keep secrets based on the engineer’s family name and family honor! It’s like The Godfather 2, where Frank Pantangeli is going to testify for the feds but the Corleones bring Frank’s older brother all the way from Sicily just to sit in court and give his younger brother a stern look. Then Frank gets on the witness stand in court and recants his prior sworn statements and testifies it was all “bullshit” and he had only been lying for “the FBI guys” because that’s what the FBI wanted him to do. Once he saw his older brother who lived in Sicily inside the NYC courtroom he appreciated the consequences of testifying against his former mafia family and what it would mean to his family honor. So, that’s all I got to say about peer pressure in Japan. I always thought based on photos it would be like alien world or other planet. Let’s hope the NWO doesn’t try to destroy Japan with migrants. Recently I saw news that Mexico is deporting Americans who are undocumented because they use dollars and are driving up prices for locals. What an irony! Mexicans don’t get deported from USA for driving down wages of Americans and taking our jobs and sending money back to Mexico. Americans are too nice. Or Mexicans are hypocrites. Or Americans are stupid for letting claims of “racism” peer pressure them into letting foreigners invade the country and buy everything with money Americans no longer have due to economic warfare waged against them. President Trump then gets election stolen from us and now they are going to sentence him to prison in July. Will Americans do shit???? Maybe we should start ripping cigs inside the bars and refuse to let Trump be sentenced and then let Trump roam the USA freely despite domestic enemies piece of paper saying warrant to arrest of President Trump. music.ruclips.net/video/GL_SEtGA1ag/видео.html&si=BUh3XFkzCgUrMl5h

In the nordics, for example Sweden, everyone has indoor gym shoes. On top of that people will not walk with shoes on in their own or other peoples homes.
The japanese government is heavily invested in the tobacco industry.

11:50. Whitey here. I have indoor shoes. They are a nice pair of Nike's that are so white I have never gone outside in them in case they get dirty. Now I keep them by the door and put them on when I get home. I thought I was strange, but maybe I would fit in over there! Edit: 23:00 - I am also old enough to remember smoking inside in the UK. My first job people were chain smoking all day, every day - right in the office. Seems odd now. 30 years later and my lungs are made out of leather.

You've gotta elaborate on why the US is the best nation because as a fellow US citizen I can't agree with that but I'm curious to hear it out.

Cigarettes are shit man. It's one thing to like to smoke (outside or inside) but you know they are bad for everyone. But thank you for sharing your thoughts, very interesting! Going to Japan soon so it's nice to hear you out :) Loved your Ireland to Japan series btw!

Bro if I moved to Japan I would smoke like a mofo. Shit was so tight when I was there. I was nervous to light one up the first time, but I did, then the waiter brought my food and beer and was so nice and nobody cared it was the best meal of my life!
