Yeah, they should have just put the old roof on top of the new floor, flat roof causes loads of problems Plus you are right, the original design is ruined You guys need to be careful In London the government offices surrounding Westminster look awful All of them, they literally make you depressed to look at them
who ultimately signed off on this!? This is a horribly inept design that ruins the general aesthetic and proportions of an otherwise beautiful building. If congress is so short of office space (which couldn't make any less sense since they're not there very often) They should've built a tasteful new building. Not ruined the beauty this is the work of Carrere and Hastings. Shameful and tasteless.
I agree with you 100%. the renewal will cost close to $600M. A new building should have been built with more office spaces and and the price would be lower. .
I suspect that from the street level you won't be able to see the additional floor because it is recessed and the parapet is raised. I don't like to see tampering with elegant historic buildings either, but this might not be so bad as it looks from the angle this videos shows. Why didn't they build another building? This is Congress. Egos are huge and everyone wants the very closest office to the Capitol. Any other locations would relegate members to second class status. Every member thinks they are the most important. Back in the 80's, there was talk of cutting back air traffic at Reagan Nat Airport in Alexandria. There was broad local support because of it terrible and dangerous approaches, one of the shortest runways in the nation with water at both ends, super cramped conditions. It just wasn't built to be a major airport. But Congress looks on RNA as their own private asset so they refused to cut back the traffic.
It’s not terrible, its just replacing the green roof. It’s similar to the 3rd floor replacing the roof of the white house back in the 1910s. Also it won’t be visible from the street. Although it does not match the rest of the building well, i do admit. And yes, I don’t like tampering with historic buildings but some changes are sometimes needed. If they hadn’t gutted the entire white house during the Truman administration then we would have no white house today, and even if it hadn’t collapsed yet, the Truman balcony wouldn’t exist. also the main purpose of the renewal is actually restoring the building, the new floor is only part of it.
@@definitely_notme4112 they could've put the green roof back on top of the new floor, it would've helped with stopping seepage of rain water, and keep the overall look
Why are there no REAL VIDEOS on this HUGE RENEWAL PROJECT...????

The corner with the 45 degree angle and the large round-topped window was in every episode of the 6 million dollar man.
I think in 2024 rn, they arent even like halfway done.

The extra floor on top and the new roof look horrible, ruined the overall aesthetic of the building.

So..... It takes 10 years to add an extra floor of offices? Classic government at work.
Its not just that, the entire building is undergoing a massive restoration on every inch of it.
