I think Rex Allen could've sang names out of the phone book and made a hit record. I think he's one of the best singers there ever was! Great actor too!
A number of folks have performed this song, and for a couple of them I can't really decide which is my favorite. That said, Rex Allen always has a special place in my heart. While decades apart, we grew up in the same area and in the same lifestyle ('till he started his climb to stardom). He will always be the voice of Cochise County and, as a true Arizonan, he's the only one who covered this song that ever pronounced Prescott correctly... it's Preskitt as in biscuit. 😂
Good point on the Prescott pronunciation. Always like when he mentioned Douglas, him being Willcox boy knew all about it. Also the song being written by another Cochise County feller, just ties it all together. I am also a Cochise county cowboy, and also was good amigos with the guy Rex got his middle name from, El ie Lane. Like I said ties it all together nicely.
I'm lonesome but happy Rich but I'm broke And the good Lord knows the reason I'm just a cowpoke From Cheyenne to Douglas All the ranges I know Cause I drift with the wind No one cares where I go Well I ain't got a dime In these ol' wore out jeans So I'll stop eating steak And go back to beans I'll pick up a ten spot In Prescott I know I'll ride in the broncs In the big rodeo Been down in the prairie My pony and I Hear the wail of the coyote Hear his cry Well next summer it's north If there ain't a big drought And as soon as it frosts Well I'll be headed back south I don't have no worries I ain't got the time I'm too busy living This free life of mine Some evening in springtime A filly I'll find And I might spend all summer With her on my mind But I'll never be branded And never be broke I'm a carefree, range riding Drifting cowpoke

I'm lonesome but happy
Rich but I'm broke
And the good Lord knows the reason
I'm just a cowpoke
From Cheyenne to Douglas
All the ranges I know
Cause I drift with the wind
No one cares where I go
Well I ain't got a dime
In these ol' wore out jeans
So I'll stop eating steak
And go back to beans
I'll pick up a ten spot
In Prescott I know
I'll ride in the broncs
In the big rodeo
Been down in the prairie
My pony and I
Hear the wail of the coyote
Hear his cry
Well next summer it's north
If there ain't a big drought
And as soon as it frosts
Well I'll be headed back south
I don't have no worries
I ain't got the time
I'm too busy living
This free life of mine
Some evening in springtime
A filly I'll find
And I might spend all summer
With her on my mind
But I'll never be branded
And never be broke
I'm a carefree, range riding
Drifting cowpoke
I'm lonesome, but happy, rich, but I'm broke
And the good Lord knows the reason I'm just a cowpoke
From Cheyenne to Douglas, all the ranges I know
'Cause I drift with the wind, no one cares where I go
I ain't got a dime in these old worn out jeans
So I'll stop eatin' steak and go back to beans
I'll pick up a ten spot in Prescott I know
Well, I'm ridin' the broncs in the big rodeo
Some evening in springtime a filly I'll find
And I might spend all the summer with her on my mind
But I'll never be branded and never be broke
I'm a carefree, range ridin', driftin' cowpoke
Rex could sing.

So someone’s lying
Not bad for an old boy from Willcox
Eddy Arnold does it best in my opinion
they just lip synced
no, not so. Old audio does this a lot, but it was not lip synced
