    I prefer Elvis version to any other version. Pep Shop Boys also did a great version, but still Elvis is better. The same happens with the song "My Way." Elvis version is, in my opinion is way better than Sinatra.

    • @ballybunion9
      @ballybunion9 4 месяца назад +1

      Sinatra was a crooner with an ultra-smooth delivery, and the lyrics to My Way are more suited to Elvis's interpretation: a guy giving the finger to the world and living his life on his own terms.

    • @felipehernandez-pedroza8288
      @felipehernandez-pedroza8288 4 месяца назад +2

      @ballybunion9 that's true. Even though Paul Anka, the writer of the English version of this song, said he wrote it with Sinatra in mind. He said that he begged Elvis not to cut the song because it didn't suit him. I disagree with him. This is a sad song. Sinatra lived almost a perfect life. Elvis, on the other hand, was miserable by the end of his short life. And when he sang it live, he sang it with passion, as if it almost hurt him to sing it. In Sinatra's version, I don't get that passion and feelings as I get with Elvis.

    I think the reason this song was not a huge hit for Elvis was because it was on the B side.
    Us older people know that back in the day the B side song was always a throw away song or a song that was not expected to be a big hit and people never took B side songs seriously.
    Another song by Elvis that should've been a huge hit but was just okay and never became a huge hit was "Suspicion" and "Suspicion" was also on the the B side, it was on the B side of "Kiss Me Quick". Most people have never heard "Kiss Me Quick" and how "Suspicion" was not considered to be a better song than "Kiss Me Quick" is beyond me and how "Always on My Mind" didn't become a huge hit for Elvis is also beyond me.
    B side songs just were not considered hits but Elvis had so many Great songs even his B side songs were huge hits.

    - - - - - forgetting the moments in Elvis' life that we tend to correlate to the song, I otherwise vacillate back & forth between EP & Willie. This is one of the few songs that on any given day, I can go either way. Willie's version doesn't get bogged down in all those strings, his voice is superb in this period, and it's right up fron (not lost in instrumentation), and that unique guitar playing solo hits the spot.
    On day's that I want more drama, more depth, more emotion, I go with EP.

    Elvis would have been first to cut the song, and many others, had Colonel Parker not been so damned greedy. His contract was written in such a way that if he didn't get a cut out of the publishing rights, or own them outright, then Elvis wasn't allowed to cut the records. There's no telling how many hits have fallen by the wayside, along with untold millions of dollars due to the colonel's greedy policies. In addition to all of his other shady deals, he worked Elvis like a dog to cover his gambling debt, which led to Elvis's steadily increasing use of various uppers and downers to meet the demands and satisfy his contractual obligations. Colonel was just as responsible, if not more so, for Elvis's untimely death as anyone else! Greed killed Elvis Presley. May he rest in peace.

      Here is some Info. that I found: Always On My Mind fun fact from: RamblinGamblinWillie
      // Article
      A common and popular mistake is to state that Elvis recording of Always On My Mind was a cover of an original Brenda Lee country hit. In fact, Always On My Mind was written for Elvis Presley by Mark James (Suspicious Minds) and it was recorded by Elvis in March 1972, before anyone else. It happens that RCA had already sheduled songs from '71 to be released as the first two singles during the first half of 1972, and then in the summer, it was Burning Love, from new batch of songs of the March session, the first one to came out, and so, Always On My Mind by Elvis, happened to be released until November '72, by then Brenda Lee, who recorded the song after Elvis, had released her version achieving a country hit with it but failing the Hot 100.

    i really love the version with the strings on it, It's really Pretty, Oh and gives you Goose bumps to,
    Didn't He Dedicate this song once to Priscilla in a concert, And it was the one and only time that
    he would Ever Perform it on stage. I may be wrong, But Im'e Pretty sure he did. Anyway i love
    Both versions of the song, Especially when willy Nelson first started to sing it live much like he
    would sing it on the record, Then he would ether only sing a short version, Or do his oddly timed
    Lyrics Style to it and i never liked it so much when would do this to it. Respect to Willy though,
    because if we didn't have His version, We wouldn't have had The Kings version, So for that thanx
    Willy, They are both Legends in there own wright, Although Elvis will always be NO 1, Great video
    Mate, I enjoyed your video very much, Nice one pall.

    It was a hit in Europe. It was the a-side in the U.K. where it was a top ten hit, and went gold. It also got to no.4 in Canada. I`m sure it could have done as well as "Burning love" had it been a a-side in the U.S. I also agree that he botched the setlist for the Aloha From Hawaii. He should have done more commercial songs instead of Beatles covers and other pretty unknown songs. Aloha could have been a great opportunity to premier hits like "Good luck charm" "Return to sender" "Devil in disguise" "Don`t" "Surrender" "His latest flame" "One broken heart for sale" or "Crying in the chapel"

      Yes! Elvis definitely didn’t need to sample other artist when he had such a vast collection of songs! I also think it’s because it was not on an A side in the US when the UK it was. The song still did very well for him overtime and became a legendary song of his.

      @@mikeivey7167 Why would he do a Beatles cover as his third song. The original version of "Something" is much better than Elvis`s version. I would rather want him to do "Always on my mind" or some of his older songs that he had never done live.
      He was doing a tv-special for the whole world, and not his regular Las Vegas act. He treated it like a Las Vegas show instead of a tv show.
      I think the song selection for his 68 comeback show was much better. He did his own material, and he played the songs people wanted to hear.
      "Something" "It`s over" and "What now my love" could and should have been left out of the set for his tv special. Elvis never played "Good luck charm" live even though it was an international no.1 hit.
      He stopped doing "In the ghetto" in 1970, and never sang any of the songs of his fantastic "From Elvis in Memphis" album. He could have done "Any day now" or "Wearing that loved on look".
      If he wanted to do songs like "Something" or "It`s over" he could have done it in Vegas. The people who produced his 1968 special had a lot of input in which songs Elvis should play. The people who produced the 1973 Aloha did not.
      That is why the 68 show is a classic, while the 73 concert was a regular Elvis concert. The 1973 show could have been much better had they treated it as a worldwide tv show instead of a Vegas concert. He should have played his own international greatest hits instead of cover songs.
      "The wonder of you" was the biggest selling hit in the UK in 1970 where it sold 1 million copies. It sold more in the UK alone then it did in the U.S. It was also a no.1 hit in many any foreign countries, and sold millions worldwide. It should have been played at his Aloha concert.
      I think the Aloha concert was a missed opportunity for Elvis. His song catalogue was second to the Beatles the greatest in history. He had so many great hits to choose from.
      I think he should have done "The wonder of you" "In the ghetto" "Good luck charm" "Return to sender" "Always on my mind" "Any day now" "If i can dream" "Crying in the chapel" "Surrender" "Don`t" "Are you lonesome tonight" "Love me tender" "She`s not you" "One broken heart for sale" and "It`s now or never" just to mention a few.
      They were all international big hits for Elvis, and would have suited a global audience like this. Elvis wasn`t performing for his usual home audience. He was performing for the world.

    You made spot-on comments, take 3 of AOMM was the better version, imo, and this song plus T-r-o-u-b-l-e should have been big hits. Elvis surely promoted the latter a lot during his 1975 tours. If one compiles the best rock/blues/funk Elvis tracks from the 70’s, studio and live, one ends up with an absolute killer record. I don’t think the record company has ever tried to do that, it would prove how much Elvis rocked in his later years, when he wanted to.

      @@ElvisistheMan_ Absolutely… I think in only relatively recent years is there more recognition (still not nearly enough imo …) of how special Elvis was as a cross-over musician, in every phase of his career, and certainly including the 1970’s: who else was mixing it all up, basically conducting all the other musicians in the studio (as well as live on stage), self-producing his own records in terms of arrangements, tempo etc, and coming up with something fresh every time ? Some tracks and albums worked better than others, and us fans may like or dislike certain songs more or less, but if there’s one thing to be said about the 1970’s is that he was true to himself, to the chagrin at the time of the “serious pop music critics” and the rock and roll purists. The pop/rock music critics were supposedly from the new progressive generation of the 60’s, but in fundamental ways they were close-minded and musically/culturally unaware outside their own bubble. For instance not able to acknowledge that someone can go from belting out raw rock and roll and blues to a MOR gentle crooner style and breezy pop, to gospels, and more in between, and then still be the coolest cat in the room, a very much believable musician, with integrity.

    It never dawned on me that Elvis could have sang Always on My Mind and Separate Ways for the Aloha show! I think you should probably create some content now on the Aloha show Elvis should have given. I will say this; i don't mind Elvis singing a Beatles song on Aloha; there's nothing critically wrong with that decision, and it also showed that he was appreciative of great songwriting. But now that I think about it, Always on My Mind should have been a no-brainer. I don't know that Always on My Mind and Separate Ways should have both been included because of the melancholy nature (though they're probably no more melancholy than I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry), though they might have paired nicely with Suspicious Minds in a relationship block. I definitely think Elvis could have sung these songs as the filler songs for the American audience. I recall hearing that Elvis tried to pair things together: couple of oldies, couple of ballads, couple of rock songs. But from an artistic standpoint, you make a good point: Elvis missed a tremendous opportunity to stake his flag in the ground for these songs on the Aloha show. Had he done so, they would have been No. 1s.

This was a potential top 3 hit in the country - but it was "hidden" with the Camden Label". It made me sick when i heard willie Nelson sing and have ha big hit with this Elvis Song ( I think written by Mark James - Suspicious Minds writer ). Elvis himself ? where was Joan Deary ( the RCA Executive in charge of Elvis' records ??. thanks for this information and exposing some things that many are NOT Aware of . Great Job as Always

There is no denying he was a brilliant song writer. He made an outstanding decision when he let Roy Orbison record Pretty Paper. When it comes to Always On My Mind, I'm like, Willie who ? Elvis owned this one and yes, you're right David. It should've been a number one hit and on the A side of Separate Ways. Nobody ever put so much emotion in a song like Elvis did and no one ever will again. He could have recorded Yankee Doodle Dandy and made it beautiful. Thank you David. TCB😊
